Yakuza 5 Official SiteYakuza 5 Live Stream Part 1 Yakuza 5 Live Stream Part 2 Yakuza:Kiwami Gameplay TrailerThis thread is dedicated to discussing Sega's open world action titles named Yakuza in the west. The games can best be compared to the likes of Metal Gear Solid and Deadly Premonition, the former for having compelling and deep characters, with some long cutscenes here and there, while also having very intricate gameplay with a lot of details; The latter for having this particular Japanese-kind-of-open-world, the kind that isn't sandbox in the same essence as that of say.. Sleeping Dogs.. there's a main story and there's a lot of unconnected nonsense though some of it (if not quite a bit of what I've played) is littered with a lot of rich characterization of the protagonists and a few memorable side characters. The combat is fun in regards to how much freedom it allows in smashing in faces of deadbeat punks or mobsters who dare or any other intuitive ways of dealing with foes. It can potentially be compared to that of a Platinum game, though about building combos and more offering a lot of options WITH ITS FISTS The story is generally centered around Kazuma Kiriyu whom starts out as a member of a Yakuza clan, in the first games, but drifts apart from them for a lot of spoilery plot-reasons; He gradually develops along the series, where with the release Yakuza 4, Sega has added a roster of new protagonists one of them being my favorite named Akiyama, a smarmy loan-shark with a heart of gold. It was a smart decision on their part as it adds new life to Yakuza by having multiple protagonists with their own stories and character. Now, given that Yakuza is generally a niche title and not many people outside of Japan having heard of it -- It ultimately means that it can't be played on anything but the Playstation, specifically PS2 & PS3. It should be noted that you can jump straight into it with Yakuza 4, or possibly even Yakuza 5, as the games stories aren't long term continuos like Metal Gear Solid. There are references and returning characters, sure, but it's not that big of a deal I assure you. I decided to make this thread in order to bring more attention to the series as well which can only help prompting Sega to localize future titles too instead of releasing more games centered around their blue rodent mascot. People who are familiar with the underrated shooter title, Binary Domain, might know what to expect in terms of story and writing because it's by the same designer and writing staff of the Yakuza games. I also just recently did a thorough guide for the series in a blog on Destructoid that even got frontpaged(so I'm proud of that). Check it out! www.destructoid.com/like-a-dragon-a-guide-to-the-yakuza-series-412484.phtmlThanks for joining the discussion! I hope there'll be some activity!

The latest entry is Yakuza 0, and I highly recommend people to check that one out for those curious about the game.
HyperbitHero did a great video on it here.

Copied from the Favorite Video Game Level Thread.
I have many, although most are from games such as the one I am going to list here. Aka unpopular bullshit most people never heard of little lone played.
Kamurocho Hills or specifically the primary office tower featured in Yakuza 2's final stage.
Ultimately the stage itself is nothing remarkable, just some half completed office building that's under construction but still maintains several floors that are furnished and you have you fight your way through before making it to the upper floors and eventually the roof during the finale of the game. However the backdrop it sets for the final boss is magnificent.
Amid winter snow you and the final boss basically beat the shit out of each other following the final bit of the story on the uncompleted roof, a note worthy addition here is the caveat that both you have you have sustained two gunshot ones a piece(its low caliber subsonic bullshit though because ya know Japan) and while a bomb ticks down after the would be puppet master is defeated, you and your rival of the game basically throw down.
The stage itself is sort of only a window dressing for the actual build up and context of the fight but its a stage I will never forget due to its symbolism though.

There's so crazy much to do in Yakuza 0
2,5 hours today which involved some bowling. Making friends with cashier, helped another person. Meet a third possible friend. Beat up about 40-50 dudes. Did like 3-4 side stories
and made about 0.1% progress on the main storyline

Done with chapter 4 and this might be one of those moments where I'll later be able to point at and say the game went from being awesome, to being something much better than that

I just spent 30 or so min betting I loved the pachinko minigame in 4. ._. Probably because I actually know how to play pachinko despite its insane rules that were obviously designed by some sort of drunkard or drugfiend. But yeah those machines were nifty and ate up a lot of my time and money.

I unlocked the good old Dragon of Dojima style. I love these new counters that are there instead of Tiger Drop, along with of the nifty heatmoves from the older games.

Yeah - he's lovable even if he bashes in people's faces with glee all over town lol. Kind of find the recklessness a bit schmexy too >.>
Ok, started playing Kiwami and this game is hard! It's frustrating in fights with rusty older Kiryu not being the spry young thang he used to be. Arrgghghg!

Necroing this because I got Kiwami a few months back when it was free on PS Plus and just got around to it recently. Took me a little bit to get into it, I was holding its story up to the high standards of Sleeping Dogs, which I lost myself in for about a solid week a few years back. I distinctly remember messaging my brother and telling him "Kiwami's no Sleeping Dogs, but it passes the time." It quickly snowballed from "It passes the time" to "Did I forget to eat today?" ...I had a few gripes, sure, the main one being Majima. I just couldn't stand him. (Hold your fire until the end of the post, please.) It was kinda fun the first few times but when you just want to go play mahjong you don't want to be ambushed from a manhole every ten minutes by a guy who's got like eighteen health bars. Also he'd never spawn as a patrolling Breaker. The one time he did, I was being chased by punks who caught up to me and he despawned. No complete ability tree for me! Anyway, I liked Kiwami enough that before it was over, I went and got Yakuza 0, that was a little over a week ago. I just finished it tonight. Wow. Easily one of the best games I have ever played. I'd been warned that the story sort of loses steam at the end, but I don't know what the hell they were talking about. Amazing ride from start to finish. Well, no. Not from start. It was merely 'good' at the start, once chapter 4 hit, that was it. I was hooked. If you had've told me that I'd be rooting for Majima in 0 after I'd finished Kiwami, I would have laughed in your face. ...Yeah, about that... He's seriously one of my favorite characters in gaming now. If he wants to chase Kiryu everywhere and crack him over the head with a bat, let him. He's earned that. What a beautiful and perfect gut punch of an ending, I'm telling ya... I bought Kiwami 2 today but haven't started it, got lots left to do in 0. And Kiwami, technically, but I got sick of being dragged around for dog food and orange juice. I'm not sure if I'll go straight to 6 afterward or wait for word of the western release of the remasters of 3, 4 and 5. I want the whole experience, preferably in chronological order, barring my little hiccup of 1 then 0. (Which I think was the right way to go for me, honestly. Yeah, it spoiled a little bit, I knew who characters were that I wasn't supposed to at that point in time, etc, but the first Yakuza's been out for years. There were probably lots of people with the same issue.) Anyway, I've found a new series of games to become obsessed with and I'm happy. BTW, Lao Gui is best guy. ...Honestly, I had to look up what the hell was up with his face. Apparently there is nothing up with his face, that's just what he looks like. In the Chinese version, he's Hong Kong actor Sam Lee.

Long time no talk Sheppy! Good to see you have joined our ranks! Glad to be here! I'm not going anywhere, looking forward to Judgement this summer. ^That right there was one of the reasons I think playing Kiwami first was the right thing for me. Otherwise I don't think I would have handled it well. Also I'm rather annoyed that the entire final mission and ending cutscenes are blocked from taking screenshots or video. I wanted a still from just before that clip as my ps4 homescreen. Anyway, Yakuza 0 rocked me in ways I have not experienced since my dumb naïve self played Bioshock. My brain pretty much checked out for several minutes after a cutscene ended with a pan down to a bat tattoo. I had to pause the game because I was still processing this and I had to read subtitles which just weren't registering. Yeah, it turned out to be sliiiightly misleading, and I never believed he was the guy anyway, although I did start to doubt that. For a little while. I even went back and rewatched his introductory cutscenes to see if there was any indication of his background. Nope, nothing. And Kazama wanted Kiryu to work with him. No way is this guy dirty. Still, though, it had me guessing until the reveal, after which everything made sense, of course. I started Kiwami 2 this morning but didn't get much of a chance to play. And it makes my ps4 sound like a jet engine. I'm going to try to pace myself with this one, and not try to marathon it like 0. That probably will not happen, but I'm gonna try. EDIT: Okay, wait. I'm a few hours in and it's just clicking now. The villain in Kiwami 2 is Ryuji Goda? THIS GUY? So he's gone from stealing pants to all-out war, huh?

Double post because I just can't keep up with how fast this thread moves. (I know the games aren't brand new, but there wasn't much activity even when they were, which is a DAMN shame.) So I'm mid-chapter 4 in Kiwami 2 and I'm... not really feeling it? Everything looks and feels weird. Facial animations don't sync up with words spoken, and when I click x to speed up the non-voiced chatter there's huge animation jumps. The Dragon Engine may have improved combat, but it's a massive step back for other stuff. And really, I don't find the combat better or worse, just different. Although I miss my beast style, though. Things I do like: - The story. S'why I'm still playing. - Being able to save anywhere again - No Pocket Circuit... yet - Ragdolling. Ragdolling always amuses me. - The entire map is loaded, you can walk right into stores without a load screen - Karaoke seems easier, plus you can watch the video that plays behind the buttons if you so choose, which I never really got to do last time because BUTTONS. - The weapon system, even though I always forget I have them - An Anteater Killed My Husband - Throwing an entire room's worth of furniture at a guy holding a sofa that wouldn't get out of my way Things I don't like: - I can't Beast everything - Everybody looks like they escaped from Tekken. Kiryu always did, but now everybody does. Well, the new characters do, anyway. Older characters are still recognizable, but still different - No disco?! I loved disco - About eight coin locker keys on three square feet of ground in Sotenbori. At least try to hide them - The text in the menus is a tad too small, I'm finding myself squinting a lil bit - Creepy photo shoots are creepy - If anyone else asks me to use the damn ufo catcher again I will punch them in the mouth Oh, and by the way, Yakuza 0 is 10% off in the PS Store, it's a budget title as it is and is worth much more than the ~20 bucks you'll pay for it. If you own a ps4 and aren't put off by violence and karaoke, you owe yourself this experience. Out-of-context screenshot of the day

Out-of-context screenshot of the day I hate the combat in the Dragon Engine games, its too floaty with the controls like in your average Rockstar Game which doesn’t work for a brawler like this, over half of Kiryu’s attacks are blocked and there are too many recycled heat actions. Yakuza 2 deserved a better remake than Kiwami 2, the reason the facial animations are stiff is because they reutilized the old mocap from the original game with no alteration. It’s not a very good remake, I’ll repeat.

Yeah, it feels like it was churned out quickly. It's a shame. I'm in Chapter 5 and still not fully invested. I'm knocking about doing substories and minigames with a cop in tow. Majima Construction seems like something I'll do once and then ignore, which is also a shame as it sounded interesting but then turned out to be a messy tower defense game. But one of the rivals in that was a huge kick in the childhood - Keiji Mutoh, AKA The Great Muta. I had a poster of him on my wall when I was 5 or 6. Just for that I may have to see the storyline to completion. Screenshot of the day, callbacks make me smile. If it hadn't clicked before, it would have now.
