Speaking of Antiva (it's, uhh.... close to Tevinter so this is totally an apt discussion ), I still want to know WTF is up with Rinnala and whether the writers just forgot she was an elf or if they're saying an elf really WAS heir to the Antivan throne. Rinna was elf-blooded meaning she was human. Her mother was an elf but her father the prince was a human. The writer of that one exchange messed up when Zevran called her an elf. But Zevran calls her an "elven lass" in DAO - it wasn't until WoT2 that they threw the royalty thing in there and made it seem like she was human. Zev's writer was Gaider and that interaction came waaaay before the lore book, so who knows?

But we don't know that, though, is what I'm saying. AFAIK there's never been any official word on which is the mistake and which is canon. Honestly I suspect whoever wrote the WoT2 entry just forgot Rinna was an elf, but I think it'd be kind of neat if they just rolled with it. Because she was an elf for like a decade before they apparently made her human or elf-blooded.

They are canon but just in a way codices in DA games are - these aren't supposed to be objectively written meta-materials, but things gathered and documented by oftentimes biased and fallible Thedosians.

I think Gaider or someone back in the day said that WoT are to be considered canon, so unless they rectify something the content is to be considered canon. Although that doesn't mean they still can't slip up on some of the lore details. There's a list of amendments in some later editions of WOT that address/correct a few mistakes made by "Genitivi", such as mixing up certain dates and details like which of Endrin's children was the eldest, middle and youngest.

Spoilers for the most recent issue of Deception... I am STOKED that they name-dropped Danarius, or at least his house! I've always wanted to know more about him. He's an evil bastard, but I've always been curious about where he picked up his knowledge about the ritual that branded Fenris, what connections that ritual has to the ancient elves and vallaslin, whether he really was willing to take on Varania as an apprentice or if he was just yanking her chain, etc. And I've always wondered if he had any relatives... but he's got a house, and they want power... 👀 In light of all that, here's some relevant art.

The qun is awesome, but the way they treat mages is unacceptable Tevinter treats well mages, but they are power-hungry slavers
Damn... hard to say which one I'd want to win.

(thank the Maker Fenris kills him in my canon world state ) I don't allow slavers or rapists to live in my games! He has to die! That said, I do think he's an intriguing character and am hoping we find out more about his history. Like how exactly he discovered that lyrium ritual. The qun is awesome, but the way they treat mages is unacceptable Tevinter treats well mages, but they are power-hungry slavers Damn... hard to say which one I'd want to win. Saaame. Two of my very favorite factions in the series. Can't wait to see more of the both of them.

it is my understanding that Danarius created that ritual himself, as to how or why I've no idea
hah, imagine...the Human player character is part of House Danarius I'm not sure if I would like that, but it could be interesting to throw of the darkness and dirt from that family name

I mean, Danarius as a family name sounds cool and all, but I have a hard time thinking of a name that would sound good with it (I tend to pick names that roll easy of the tongue)

Valeria Danarius, Diana Danarius, Leta Danarius, Cassius Danarius, Remus Danarius, Dominic Danarius...

*goes to look at her characters* damnit...already have one with a French name (my Inquisitor...but I might change her name)

I hope we're not Orlesian! Nothing againt Orlesians in particular, but I'm soooo done with Orlais. I've been ready for Tevinter and Par Vollen since DAO. 👀 Lots of nice French names out there, though - and totally made up ones, like Leliana and Briala - so if that is the case then I'm sure we'll make do.

but chances are we're Orlesian You think that because...? It's that theory that we are always a PC from the last place the game was set in. Set in Fereldan, Hawke is a Fereldan set in Free Marches. Then all the origins of the Inky are from the Free MArches, but their set... well, in an in between place, but I suppose you could say most of the game happens in Orlais.

Me to! also, I found a nice Latin name, Lucina (it's a shameless nod to another game I love playing ) but chances are we're Orlesian You think that because...? well, given the pattern the games have had so far
The Warden was from Ferelden, so was Hawke but they moved to the Free Marches, Quizzy is from the Free Marches and spends most of their time in Orlais but chances are we're Orlesian (French) so we'll probably need a French name
but in all seriousness though, I too don't hope for Orlais to be our background...I'm not sure I could handle a French accent for 100+ hours
don't get me wrong, I love French as a language (I'd love to be able to speak it) but most of the in-game accents sound horrible (looking at you Isolde)

Leliana is not a made up name. I had a class with one. I know Liliana and Eliana are both names with established histories - maybe her parents just liked the spelling variant of one of those? That's kind of what I figured they were going with with Leliana.

I think that we'll be a Tevinter as British accents are more hmmm, accessible than French (Orlesian), Spanish (Antivan) or German (Nevarra). Skin tones are also just a varied as seen from the wide cast of Tevinters we've seen and thus integrate easier when it comes to roleplaying.

So, Dorian trying to reform an entire country and culture. Is it going to happen? Possibly, if only because Tevinter will be in a very fragile state by the end of this between the Qunari invading and Solas doing his thing and all the consequences that could happen from that. Plus reforming institutions is kind of what we do in Dragon Age games.
