I'd like to have the Black Divine playing an important part in DA4. And I'd like him to be the more cynical and pragmatic ass we've ever met.
The Imperial Chantry is pretty hilarious because Tevinter invaded the Golden City, killed Andraste, didn't drop the slavery, officialy dropped blood magic but not really.
Also Dorian talks about the Black Divine just going to parties and murdering people. I'd say the current Black Divine is the true Murder Pope, he got into power by purging the ancient Divine and his friends because they were "corrupted", but once in power corruption didn't bother him all that much. It also seems the Chantry in Tevinter is just an excuse to "purge" mages, rumor is it was first created as a political excuse to kill the all powerful altus mages back in the days. And even their templars and rite of tranquility are used as a political bludgeon.

The more on how I think Maevaris or Calpernia* could be Companions in DA4, the more I think our possible pro-Tevinter status quo Companion (expansionism, blood magic, slavery, etcetera) could not be a mage. Like an inverse Vivienne, such a character could explore why they would support such a society, especially when they *apparently* don't have as much to gain. Maybe an Imperial Reaver who loves conquest, or a squib who wants their mostly mage family to advance? Will To Power type Ambassadoria dwarves like Bhelen or Branka? Or a famed gladiator who doesn't think about politics one way or the other, and just wants more battle and glory?
*They can't both be Companions, since that would be two white female Tevinter reformist mages. Yes, Cal is more radical, but that's not enough to justify having both of them in my eyes. It would leave only one, maybe two mage slots for an ancient Elven mage, a Tal-Vashoth Saarebas, an Avvar shaman, a Rivani Seer, a Titan touched Dwarf, and so on...

Damn, I hope DG has seen that Mae cosplay. I think he'd love it. Oh, he definitely would! He goes heart eyes when people mention Mae. It would leave only one, maybe two mage slots for an ancient Elven mage, a Tal-Vashoth Saarebas, an Avvar shaman, a Rivani Seer, a Titan touched Dwarf, and so on... I'd be happy with either/or Calpernia or Maevaris. Maybe one in a significant NPC role (like an advisor or a Leandra-ish presence). Or both. But I think the idea of a super pro Tevinter warrior or rogue would be neat. Inquisition was all about subverting expectations (the city elf who doesn't give a whit about elves, the staunchly pro status quo Circle mage). It could just be that this person really, really hates the Qunari or Solas and will always choose Tevinter over them even if they're not happy about it. Or maybe they truly believe that mages are the top tier of society for a reason and the South has it backwards.

Seems like it could be an interesting character either way and I'm sure they'd find some justification for it... a reformist who loves what Tevinter could be, or a traditionalist whose family ties or religious beliefs make them sympathetic to the status quo.

a traditionalist whose family ties or religious beliefs make them sympathetic to the status quo. I agree that they could do it, but I think they will hard a hard time selling this one. If you're not an altus, it's difficult to escape the fact that magic is everywhere in Tevinter and that the mages are the ones who hold ultimate power, politically, financially, and in control over every aspect of Tevinter life. If you are an altus soporati, I think it is highly variable and based on an individual's experience. I'm of the mind that there certainly could be families that don't care if they have a "dud," but even then moving about in altus society would be difficult for that person. I imagine it could end up turning into a sort of Vivienne situation. Her opinions are based on her own privileged experience in the Circle and she doesn't really want to hear about how horrible other Circles were. Someone who is that narrow minded, who doesn't even try to look at things from another perspective, is not fun to deal with. Obviously, not all characters have to be likeable, but still... I'd rather not have a Tevinter (non-mage) Vivienne.

^ I'm biased because I adore Vivienne and that's exactly who I was thinking of. The writers love to subvert expectations. Leliana, the seemingly innocent Chantry sister who's actually more of a... ninja nun assassin, Sera the city elf who couldn't give a fig about elven culture, Vivienne the powerful mage who is 100% supportive of the Circle system... I'm just saying, I could absolutely see such a character existing. eta; I hope we do get characters who support the status quo, if only because an entire party of idealistic reformists who conveniently support southern values would be..... pretty stale, I think.

Varania springs to mind. Rather than being grateful for Fenris getting their mother and her freed, she believed her life had only gotten worse and that Fenris had "received the better end of the bargain". She was even willing to sell him out for the chance to become Danarius' apprentice and a magister one day. We don't really know if she approved of the system, but she seemed more than willing to accept it, if that meant she could advance in it. Having a freed slave that supports maintaining the status quo (although perhaps not slavery), might be a nice subversion in future games. Or going one step further, giving us a former slave who doesn't care at all about abolition or reform, all that matters is they managed to earn their freedom.

re subverting expectations.
Gaat was a city elf who turned to the Qun. I know it's not technically slavery, but that is someone who chose it. It'd be interesting to have a ex slave or actual slave companion who says it changed their life for the better.
Should this thread be in the DA4 section?

I imagine there are a loooot of former slaves who find the Qun preferable, if only because of the lack of beatings and sexual abuse. But yes summoning SofaJockey how do you feel about moving this thread to the DA4 subforum? We're here stanning for Tevinter, need moar visibility stans.

I would like to be able to play as a character who indulges in all the glorious excesses of the Tevinter nobility. Eating honey glazed suckling pig uterus off of the back of an elven slave, while watching gladiatorial battles and drinking far far too much wine out of a lead cup. And then ending the meal by murdering a rival with bloodmagic.
Generally I dont like playing as evil characters but I think when they throw Tevinter at me I can make an exception.
