Oh god! Tomorrow? YAS, Finally!! When do they usually release patch notes? At the same time as the patch or before? With the last one I think they released them the day before...

And I'm sure they did do research or at the very least relied on their past experiences, but you don't need your work checked over by others to make sure it passes muster. But I think this comes down to differences on writing style ARE we sure they did research? Leaving aside the issue of whether characters are well written (a subjective assessment), their black hole lenses objects IN FRONT of it! When they first show the Hyperion approaching Andromeda, they're still LIGHT YEARS away from it. That's not subjective, that's Physics. If they didn't even research the science bits, why are you SURE they researched the other stuff? It's not just the more complicated science stuff that most people wouldn't notice that's a bit odd in this game. A conversation with Aya governor Paaran Shie is still vividly in my mind. In that, Ryder asked the phenomenal question: "I noticed that you, Evfra and Jaal have different accents. Why is that?" The answer was that the Scourge has separated them for so long that angara societies developed different dialects on different planets (Evfra is from Voeld, Jaal from Havarl and she from someplace else). Okay, let's just put aside the technical facts that they are speaking with a translator and apparently it must be highly advanced if it can parse angara accents and filter them into "equivalent" human accents, I guess... at least the quarians all had the same accent, which could be a glitch of the translator parsing their speech. But seriously, which master linguist came up with that explanation? Why would Ryder ever even ask that question? Has anyone in the Bioware team spoken a language? Like, just their mother tongue, I'm not asking much here. Has it occured to them that for example people from Austin, New York, Edinburgh, Dublin and Sydney tend to sound different without actually living on separate planets and not speaking to each other for hundreds of years? Hell, I could drive 200 km south and find people who speak a version of German that sounds completely different from mine when I go full local accent. It's just... such a stupid question and obviously I know why it's there, it's so Paraan can give you exposition about the Scourge. But it's writing like that which really makes it hard to take this game serious sometimes. (I realise that this ticks me off more than it should because I'm into linguistics, but ugh, it's such an obvious exposition trigger.) Also from that conversation, apparently angara elect political leaders by "arguing loudly until one candidate remains". I just... does that even count as a political system? Just imagine the leaders of the political parties in your country deciding an election like that. She's the leader of a whole friggin' planet. I doubt you could decide the leader of a single city-state like that without riots breaking out.

you're right I'm sure there are gay people there who think having hardly any content is actually, Good, and they too pushed the big red button that said POLISH CORA SEX SCENE [..] It's also since been noted that the reason why Cora's sex scene is so well animated is because the person who animated it is a former Naughty Dog animator(a studio that does a lot of custom hand crafted animations). It has more to do with him being an extremely talented individual than it does with them deciding to spend a ton of resources polishing it. This is the sort of thing that's on management to look at and go "This area of the game needs more work done on it because it's not up to par with everything else". Well and...WHY has he done Coras scene and not Reyes, Suvi, Vetras and Gils? That one guy could have cut out 20 minutes and spread those equally on those foru, but no, hetero scene with PB, cora and jaal are more important as it seems.. Why do they put their most talented people onto the heterosexual softcore-porn scene(of a person that is, ironically considered unfuckable by those shes supposed to pander to, because her hair isnt feminine enough.) Why do the hetero-pairing get the longest scenes, animated by the best animators while the rest gets some scraps, tumbled together by those animators who feel icked out by gay men making out and don't have the professional maturity to admit it and then to ask someone who does feel comfortable with animating an intimate gay love scene between two dudes. or to just do it and work through their sense of unease. so.. why is that? because heteros are more important. Hetero players are more important, homophobic hetero players are more important, so important that they get the best people, staff, animations and everything must be designed with them in mind.. why is that? because they are more important? Then Bioware should own that and don't pretend to be LGBT friendly.. because being an ally doesn't just work when its easy and convenient to do.. If you are drowning in cake, giving one to me wont cost you much. If you only have one, to share it equally, giving something that means you cant get as much as you are used to because you share.. that would be being an ally. Shit is worthless if not supported by deeds. its being like gaider or weekes, accepting uncomfortable criticism, allotting resources away from the default because, as gaider said.. just because gstraight peope are inte majority doenst mean they are entitled to getting everything or more and better. Being LGBT friendly means ggiving us something because we matter, and not because they had some resources flying around that nobody needed, so they can give it to the gay and pose asa an inclusive company.. you know homophobia doenst even have to mean hate. I dont care whether (general you, not you as person)you think i deserve less quality because you hate me or whether you think you still deserve more because you are straight and, no hate, but you people are the majority so you deserve the majority.. the effect is still the same. it means being the last thing considered because everything else is more important.. that means a team that spends time programming sand and snow particles clinging to the nomad and our armor, but shitting in some third rate M/m scene that gets over hyped in PR and driving out Cheryl because shes not dancing around the straight male homophobic gamerboy they seem to cater so much while pretending they care. Second class, second fiddle, the last considered.. even if thats for practical reasons, its still second class.

Well, but there comes in the part we can't know about. Did they put the Naughty Dog animator on Cora by accident and Coramancers just got lucky, or did they put their most talented animator on the romance that they had decided was the most important romance on purpose? Because he is also a (human) resource in the game-making process that is probably allocated with some thought behind it. I do agree that ME:A has a lot of problems that can be squarely blamed on just bad management because I have been in projects at work that, in the end, looked a little bit like ME:A (on a much smaller scale, but with the same issues of weaknesses in just about every area committed by sub-teams that I knew could do much better) and they do usually come about thanks to confused and/or incompetent leadership. You're right it's very likely most individual employees may not even have had the oversight of the project to really know what problems might be happening. Considering the state of the game at release, they probably were busy enough trying to get their own stuff in line by the time the deadline rushed towards them. I'm still somewhat leery that Halon's Razor applies here, though ("Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."). The ME series has historically had its problems with the depiction of especially gay/bisexual males. It's disheartening but I feel like management may have looked at this and gone "this area of the game is not up to par with everything else and that's okay." Ultimately we'll never know why he got Cora's romance. I imagine there was thought behind it, but there are half a dozen different reasons as to why they might have done that and none of them have any more credibility than the last. There's no way the management is getting out of this one. Either they looked at the content and thought it was fine or they just didn't bother looking at it, and either way they fucked up. Though I find that in a lot of cases, people get a little too comfortable with the idea of blaming those down in the trenches for the decisions of the higher ups.

Have we had any update about the deluxe edition extra outfit (and was that the only extra thing people are getting? I can't remember if they implied there was any other delayed extras coming in May). And this new patch, is it really only MP improvements? I keep seeing that being mentioned. Did they announce this patch was only MP? (Thanks to anyone willing to fill me in )

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Scott Ryder "The Gay"? I thought not, it's not a story BioWare would tell you. It is an Initiative legend. Scott Ryder was a Pathfinder of the Initiative, so powerful and so gay he could use the Fabulousness to influence the devs to create M/M content... He had such a knowledge of the gay side of the Kinsey scale that he could even keep the ones who cared about him from having criminally short romance arcs. The gay side of the scale is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be disturbing. He became so powerful ... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught BioWare everything he knew, then BioWare killed any further M/M content in development. He could save others from death, but not himself.

Well you can't say they're universally considered to be awfully written Yeah, they wouldn't be adding improvements if they were majorly liked now would they? Can you stop being the devil's advocate for one day? Can we just talk without you coming in and derailing the conversation? To be fair, there are three main complaints about the m/m options, but only one of those is actually about the quality of the writing. The other two (the quantity of content and the lack of a squadmate option) are about quantity of material and character roles, not writing standards (and looking at the character threads it's pretty clear that there are people who don't consider them "awfully written"). I know some people are expecting more, but I suspect that it's the quantity issue that's most likely to be addressed in a patch rather than either of the others.

Though I find that in a lot of cases, people get a little too comfortable with the idea of blaming those down in the trenches for the decisions of the higher ups. Agreed. The Extra Credits video on the facial animations mentioned how despite the animators getting flack, it might not even be an animation issue. It might be any number of other things that broke the animation algorithm. The thing is that we'll never know for sure what went wrong: with facial animations, M/M romances, any of it. Not without leaks, anyway. There might be an internal post-mortem for the dev team, but we're sure as hell never gonna see it.

And I'm sure they did do research or at the very least relied on their past experiences, but you don't need your work checked over by others to make sure it passes muster. But I think this comes down to differences on writing style It's not though. Bioware writers work on a team. Their writing process is already collaborative. Bringing someone in with specific lived experiences to provide feedback on an m/m romance isn't substantially different than having someone proofread for grammar, plot holes, or continuity. If it's not done by the writers, it should be done by the editors since it's their job to check over a writer's work "to make sure it passes muster". Bioware's editors should be even more involved than a typical print editor, since they are essentially editing a commodity rather than an individual writer's vision. a commodity that is crafted by individual writers, with feedback admittedly, but the vibe I've always gotten from BioWare writing is that they have a bit of freedom, for good or ill, to do bring their own vision to the material they use. That's why there are certain writers we expect certain things of.

Of course there will always be fans of nearly any character, but I have a hard time believing the majority of people do not think there are seriously flaws with the way Gil is written. Of course you can say, "well, you can't prove it", and all we have to go on is the tone of various online communities. I think denying the pretty obvious bulk of complaints is either obtuse or just intellectually dishonest, though. There are certainly additional complaints about the state of m/m romances, but that's no reason to minimize the issue of the writing, at least for Gil. Reyes has gotten a more positive result, from what I've seen, possibly because he's a bi character that was written with a different first perspective. Or just because.. he has a better writer. I couldn't tell you on that one.

I agree, and adjacent question, who did actually write Gil and what else has s/he written for Bioware so far? Does anyone know? I think its Neil Pollner. He wrote Peebee and Gil for ME:A. He also wrote the Sith Warrior questline for SW:TOR.

Of course there will always be fans of nearly any character, but I have a hard time believing the majority of people do not think there are seriously flaws with the way Gil is written. Of course there will always be fans of nearly any character, but I have a hard time believing the majority of people do not think there are seriously flaws with the way Gil is written. Jill needs to eliminated from the romance. If they really want a fertility expert to harp on people for not breeding, how about going with a straight couple that can..you know actually have kids.
