At least for its references and other parallels, I'd say Planescape: Torment first. In the same vein as DS1 to DS3, the latter's refined some of the more annoying bits of the original, but I'd still be hard-pressed not to recommend PS:T first for the overall experience. Too early for now to say which ends best. I'd personally say Numenera goes farther than a tribute or love letter. No more than Pillars of Eternity was for Baldur's Gate or its ilk. I second this. Playing PST will only make you appreciate Numenera more.

Is the protagonist from the previous game the same person as the "Changing God"? Highly doubtful, as the Planescape and Numenera settings are completely different

Is the protagonist from the previous game the same person as the "Changing God"? Its only a spiritual successor, they are completely separate franchises. Think Pillars of Eternity.

I've only just started and I have no idea what I'm doing. How badly can I accidentally nerf myself? I'm an Intelligent Nano rn, could anybody give me any hints on what I should be investing in? I'm going with observant nano, myself. Here's my character. I'll probably end up being squishy as hell, but I don't care. I just want to unlock every machine/memory/dialogue I possibly can.

Nanos are the "casters" so you want Intellect, primarily. I'm playing an Intelligent Nano myself, and took Lore: Machinery and Anamnesis This being a "Torment" game, a talky skill may also come in handy, like Deception or Persuasion Edit: Scan Thoughts too. That's proving to be a popular nano skill. That's pretty much what I did, except I did take Scan Thoughts. My main problem is that I have no idea how leveling works and how much stuff I will be able to take later if I don't do it now. Also, should I be investing in Might and Speed at all? And a stupid question, probably... how do I end conversations if I don't want to go through all the options, for RP reasons? I can't seem to figure that out... Thanks for the help! It seems that there's an odd point of all the stats "lying around", I mean they can be obtained by doing conversations, unlocking numenera (the weird statues etc.) and memories and such, so I wouldn't be investing a lot on them. Just stick to intelligence, I would say.

I'm hoping, since most combat is supposed to be avoidable, I'll manage to get by even if I bork my build a bit, but then again I don't know how hard the unavoidable fights will be... Oh well, you only play a game for the first time once and I don't want to spoil myself by trying to find out exactly what, when and where I can get.

So I have a question about the Tides. If the tides reflect how the character is treated in the game,I am guessing that changing tides is not a good thing? Is it similar to Paragon/Renegade? Right now blue and gold keeps shifting as dominant sometimes both. Every so often there is another color but that color is not shown in the symbol on the character page. Is is important to be concerned about the changing Tides or let it go. I'm not entirely clear on the effects of the tides yet, but they seem to be how your actions reflect upon you and are remembered. It is your "Legacy". For right now I'm treating it simply as an alignment system, to keep track of how I'm acting around people.

I was concerned the dialog was changing based on the tides. Yeah with a couple of exceptions that I have found (so far), the Tides do not affect your dialogue, you dialogue affects the Tides

Concerning a companion you receive in the first hub A child joined me in my quest against both a god and death incarnate.
This feels like a bad idea.
She talks to a rock she carries in her pocket and says it's a god.
*looks around numenera* I don't trust this girl or that h*cking rock

I mean Aligern is tin-foil hat paranoid Callistige is the very definition of "mad scientist" Tybir seems out to screw everybody, figuratively AND literally Matkina is cynical af. Fortunately, I seem to have rewritten reality so she's at least not twitchy and brain damaged anymore. So yeah, the possibly-insane ten year old is an absolute treasure in comparison

Kickstarted years ago and mostly avoided Early Access. Just started.
Intelligent Nano - Tier 1 Tide - Blue Might - 6 Speed - 5 Intellect - 10 (+1 Edge) Max Effort - 2
Abilities: Active - Onslaught, Quantum Step Passive - Concentration Increase, Cypher Limit Increase, Scan Thoughts
Skills: Exploration - Anamnesis, Lore: Mystical Combat - None Inability - Medium Weapons, Heavy Weapons
I intend on enjoying pure RP through this all, even if I miss out on stuff or take alternate routes. I actually surrendered to the first gang that confronted me and woke up with only Callistege.
I love the piano music so much.
Seems a lot of others here are Nanos (and often Intelligent) as well. Not very surprised as this seems to be the approach of people very narratively driven (compared to combat or exploration).
I'm not intending on focusing on this game, especially as I have school, job hunt, F2P mobile games (what?), DAO and ME3 'definitive' playthroughs, and MEA coming up. But I am kinda liking what's happening so far and I'm certainly having a better experience than when I first tried Early Access.
I hope this game is enough of a success to justify good updates and ideally expansion to content or a sequel.

As far as I gather, tides: -affect how others approach you -there may be specific rewards -there is at least one special skill, called Tidal Affinity, that better allows you to influence how the tides work -affect the ending, who you are and how you're regarded at the end of things
All-in-all tides are at least mostly not intended as a gating mechanic keeping you from any content (quests, companions, regions, etc), but in manipulating them, you let them carry you along the story, and what your life will ultimately 'matter'.
The Last Castoff (you) is attuned to the tides - aware of them and able to manipulate them. In small ways, like expressing motivations, or big ways, like physical actions, or huge ways, like major actions that express yourself in a widespread way.
There can be NPCs that are rather unaffected by the tides.
There can be NPCs that are rather affected by the tides.
There can be NPCs that are also attuned to the tides, I'll watch out for them!
There can be non-NPCs (items, etc) that are affected by your tide.
The tides were originally just going to be 5ish but they added as stretch goals the 2-mixes and balanced tides, resulting in 16 types.

I just recruited Erritis. I think he may replace Rhin as my favorite follower. Scan Thoughts takes an amusing character and makes him HILARIOUS! Reading his mind it's almost like Minsc and Edwin are arguing with each other over who gets to drive Also: He's absolutely besotted with Matkina, of all people!

So yeah, I was interested in the game because it's made by InXile, the same company that made Wasteland 2, one of the greatest games I ever played and the game that made me like turn based isometric games. However, I'm reading here and you guys say it's pretty dialog heavy... I don't like to sound like a child that only likes combat and can't stand reading some dialog... but for some reason I can't get myself into games like these. Kind of like it happened with Divinity Original Sin, a fantastic game by all accounts, but I cannot get into it. I also tried Pillars of Ethernity and had this same issue I admit the game is great, but I just can't play it.

I think I've only been in two fights so far I couldn't talk my way out of. SO in that sense, it's nothing like Wasteland 2. OTOH, it's also quite clear they weren't BS-ing us when they said this was a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment.

That line stung a slight bit, considering my experiences (gay). Not personal experiences for most part, but close enough.

And now, for science and speculation, smud on Tides.... Should be interesting. I agree that "What does one life matter" isn't exactly the deepest philosophical theme, it's like the old throw-the-guy-over-the-train-tracks-to-save-five-others thought experiment. I don't personally feel the game explored that particular theme any deeper than the above. As for my thoughts on the game: If you need a number, it's low-to-mid 8's. The written version's finished and currently working on the rest. I have issues with the game, but little in regret towards buying it. If you like otherworldly adventures with Verbose/Flowery Text, this is a very good choice.

I'm not really a fan of the "What does one life matter?" thing. It just feels really simplistic, especially when you compare it to "What can change the nature of a man?"
