Now, what's an underrated book? My basic definition is that it's a book or a book series that you've read and enjoyed, but you're surprised that not a lot of people have even heard about it. This could range from old books that haven't gotten much attention, or even brand new books that have yet to garner attention. List them in this thread, and you may end up giving people ideas for what new books to read!
Here are some of mine:
- Anonymous Rex: It is a comedy detective noir story set in a world where dinosaurs live among humans in special disguise suits.
- Windhaven: George R.R. Martin book about people who use mechanical wings to fly.
- Wild Cards: Another George R.R. Martin book that is an anthology of super powered people right after World War 2.
- The School for Good and Evil: brand new young adult book series about two schools. One teaches you how to be a fairy tale hero, the other teaches you to be a fairy tale villain.

The "Age of Fire" 6-book series by E. E. Knight. Apparently, he is better known for his Vampire Earth series of novels, though I haven't read those yet. But "Age of Fire" is really cool in that it is told from a dragon's point of view and the first three books are each from the viewpoint of a different dragon sibling, that then come together for a combined story in the final three books.

Metro 2033. The release of the game has raised awareness of the books, but there are still a *lot* of people who aren't even aware that there even *is* a book and only know of the game.

Not sure if it is really considered under-rated but I have read it at least 50 times....I know that if asked the majority of people know about this book or have at least heard of it....it's really rare if I meet/ talk to someone who has actually read it. I took what I learned in this book and applied it to certain aspects of my life and I was able to completely change my life because of it.

Československá válečná armáda 1918-1939 - Josef Fetka, Pavel Šrámek
Some of you will ask - what? That is the genuine title of the book, and I'm not sure if it has been translated to English yet. I haven't looked, simple as that.
I'm not that far through it, but it's originally a work written by a pre-WWII Czechoslovak army officer, recently edited by Pavel Šrámek and published by Mladá Fronta. As such, it's quite enjoyable, in part thanks to being an actual recollection of events, weapons, and the general situation. The inside of the (hard) cover is actually filled with the 1938 Czechoslovak officers' signatures, as well.
Probably not what you had in mind, but this is the kind of book I really like.

The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell First book is "Dauntless" Captain John “Black Jack” Geary’s legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic “last stand” in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance Fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndic.
Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance’s one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic “Black Jack” legend...

The Firekeeper series by Jane Lindskold is underrated, in my opinion. It's about a girl that can talk to animals and is raised by wolves, set in a medieval era world. I definitely think it deserves it's own movies or tv show, along with The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

Literally every book in the Legends of Ethshar series. I mention that Lawrence Watt Evans is my favorite author and all I get are blank stares.
Ethshar is essentially a deconstruction of a magic-heavy fantasy setting. There are numerous schools of magic, the main six of which are Theurgists (who commune with the gods), Demonologists (who summon demons), Wizards (who perform rituals that tap into the chaos of the world), Sorcerers (who use magitek powered by the order of the world), Witches (who use psionic magic powered by their own bodies), and Warlocks (who draw upon an otherworldly source to gain telekinetic powers). Some of the books are simply about individuals trying to make their way in the world, while others are about world-changing events. I would recommend the series to anyone who is a fan of medieval fantasy.

The War of the Flowers by Tad Williams.
The story focuses on a washed out musician named Theo Vilmos who gets sucked into Faerie after being chased by an undead entity to find out that a war between noble houses is erupting. It's fascinating in how the world is established as mirroring the modern world but carrying its own set of rules like the dangers of entering any body of water before making a deal with the spirits living in it or coming to a crossroads at midnight will have a troll make you an offer, even if its a 3 second head start before it eats you.

Underrated...hmmmm.... Pursue the Past: Samair in Argos: Book 1 While searching the great forest of Amazon, awaiting more HH Weber books and/or Safehold to hit, I search for things to occupy my time. I found this charming series. Tamara Samair, a decorated Republic Naval officer, narrowly avoids a wrongful conviction at the hands of a jealous subordinate. Dropped in the void and left for dead, lost in survival sleep for centuries, she awakes to find her world has changed and hitches a ride on a decrepit freighter. Tamara and the crew work together to fix the dying ship, try to fight off pirates with a Republic Naval warship captain ruthlessly pursuing them, all while trying to turn a profit. The Argos Cluster is a dangerous place, but some of the worst threats are those left behind. Here's my review of the first book: Really enjoying this so far. Kind of reminds me of Farscape and Firefly as far as the crew goes because they are such lovable misfits. There are a few grammar blips here and there but it hasn't distracted me from the overall narrative. Can't wait to see where the crew of the 'Stella go next. And so far there's 4 books in the series. Haven't read the Wandering Engineer series that so many compare this set to but one day Ill get to it. www.amazon.com/Pursue-Past-Samair-Argos-Book-ebook/dp/B00M2KSZEY/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

It's a well written, well thought out series. I'm not a huge space opera/military sf fan but the characters are well developed. Throw in a plot that moves nicely along and the series makes for a good popcorn read.

Throw in a plot that moves nicely along and the series makes for a good popcorn read. That series is like if Shepard, Sarah Conner, and Ripley had babies. And they are all talking shit and taking names. 4th book is hitting in may I think.... madgeniusclub.com/2017/01/31/ideas/ In the meantime, here are cover reveals for Dagger of Elanna and Victory from Ashes. Dagger will be released in February 21st. Victory is planned for a May/June release date.

The question seem alien to me. Underrated?
No, I dunno. I don't thinks so. I've been entertained by some bad books. Maybe that works? But they were hardly underrated.
Overrated otoh,.. but I better not go there.
Here's some bad books I've been entertained by: E. E. Doc Smith's 'Lensman' series. Horribly bad, crude SF from very long ago. Entirely my own fault that I like it.
Some mediocre books I've found quite entertaining: Elisabeth Moon's 'Vatta's war'-something. Also a SF series, and not really my fault since they are kinda cool. I'll probably read something more by Moon some day.

Doc Smith received much contemporary criticism for his portrayal of how couples talk to each other. Science fiction author F M Busby spent some time with the Smiths and sent a letter to fellow author Robert Heinlein stating that Doc Smith and his wife really did speak that way. He was writing what he knew.

Not sure if Captain Blood by Rafael Sabatini can be considered underrated cuz I just have no clue how popular/unpopular it is these days. Pretty sure it was famous back in the day it was published. I enjoyed it a lot and pretty sure I have to blame this book that I'm sooo into pie rats. Wait a minute, I messed up something...

Some more underrated books, out of the indie sphere: It kinda reminds me of Star Trek meets Babylon 5. A disrespected ship, exiled to lonely patrol in the dark corners of the solar system. A crew of screw-ups, written off by the entire fleet. They're about to change everything. If they don't blow themselves up first.
Join the Endurance's crew - a trigger-happy first officer, a hyperactive engineer, a shy covert operative, a conspiracy-spouting physicist, and a captain trying to earn his way back into his superiors' good graces - as they explore the galaxy by accident and trip their way into saving the world.

I read the first one for free and ended up buying and reading the whole series (8 books) in a week! It's popcorn space opera but it was fun and has enjoyed a fair number of Firefly comparisons. I wasn't a big fan of the ending but the journey was great, if not deep. I don't pay a lot of attention to mainstream "best seller" stuff. Usually when I find a book I love I find out it was widely know a decade or three before and I'd only just caught up. That happened with Lucifer's Hammer and A Canticle for Leibowitz, two of my absolute favorite books which I came to find out had been popular either when I was a little kid or before I was born.

Forests of the Night, Spectres of the Dawn and Emperors of the Twilight by Andrew Swann was a very interesting trilogy to read. It mainly deals with genetic engineering of animals to an anthropomorphic level, dubbing them "Moreaus" so that they could be used for war. Turns out, there are some hefty prices to pay for altering their genes to such a degree. While they'll have better reflexes and senses than humans, they age so much faster, often dealing with crippling problems like warped bones or early onset arthritis by the time they hit late thirties. Rat breeds and any mass bred animals die by late twenties if they're lucky to live that long. The main character is technically Nohar Rajasthan, a private eye detective who is also a tiger, who investigated a plot that led to a conspiracy that turns out the government was being manipulated by aliens with a different chirality than earthlings to delay space travel progress because of competition for resources. The Moreaus resulted from their interference because the aliens instigated the wars between countries. The aliens themselves resemble walking amoebas that smell of septic bags. [/spoilers]
The science was fascinating, the description of combat made me wince and I loved how the characters were all believable.

This one is underrated in so far as that it was likely never translated to English - the author never managed to gain international fame despite being quite popular in Germany for a while. Wolfgang Hohlbein's "Die Töchter des Drachen" (Daughters of the Dragon). It is the story of Talianna, a young woman living in a devastated, dangerous world with a medieval technology level, populated by numerous monsters. She seeks revenge against the dragon riders who destroyed her village twenty years ago, killing her parents in the process. Despite the fact that Talianna possesses quite a few negative character traits, like her overriding desire for revenge that makes her sacrifice even friends and allies in pursuit of her one goal, the author manages to make the reader feel for her and even sympathize in a certain way. And as she gets closer to her targets, we learn more about how her world came to be and what else is out there, and why the order of dragon riders exists in the first place. It turns out that the world is actually a post nuclear holocaust setting, and that any monsters are the result of mutation through lingering radiation. The dragon riders exist to stop any advancement of technology in order to prevent this scenario from ever happening again. When a miller comes up with some smart mechanism to grind flour, for example, it won't be long until the dragon riders show up. There is a sequel, "Der Thron der Libelle" (Throne of the Dragonfly), which takes this scenario one or two notches higher.

This charming book gets overlooked and is underrated in comparison to some of his works. The concurrent multilevel meanings and exploration of ideas in this novel is breathtaking at times. Highly recommended if you're one to enjoy a challenging but rewarding read.
