Metro 2033. The release of the game has raised awareness of the books, but there are still a *lot* of people who aren't even aware that there even *is* a book and only know of the game. I can tell where the game was influenced by the book. But it was more loosley inspired by the game, rather then based off it. Still a great novel, and game. Not sure if it is really considered under-rated but I have read it at least 50 times....I know that if asked the majority of people know about this book or have at least heard of it....it's really rare if I meet/ talk to someone who has actually read it. I took what I learned in this book and applied it to certain aspects of my life and I was able to completely change my life because of it. good on you sir! I haven't managed to apply this book to my life, but I'm glad someone has. The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell First book is "Dauntless" Captain John “Black Jack” Geary’s legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic “last stand” in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance Fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndic.
Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance’s one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic “Black Jack” legend...
God yes. I read the lost fleet in about a month. And went through beyond the frontier inside of 2 weeks. Took me a bit longer with Midway books, but mostly because of the time of my finishing the novel and the next one to come out. I've read a few books that I'd be surprised if anyone heard of them. The Vince Lombard series (Consisting of Starfire and the prequel Fey). And Right now, the Tales from the solar clipper series. Just about done with it, and I'm kinda sad its at an end. Even still, the next to last book in the series titled 'Owners Share' is almost twice as long as the previous novels. So I'm happy it'll be sticking around a bit longer then the previous ones.

Cool Topic . one author that comes to my mind immediately in this context is Peter Watts. He´s a former marine biologist who writes Hard Sci-Fi. Although he has been nominated for some awards and even won a Hugo for one of his stories, his works do not seem to have had the commercial success they may deserve. His novel "Blindsight" is one of the best "First Contact" stories I have ever read and features Aliens that are far removed from typical tropes. You can grab it for free from his website if you want to take a look: www.rifters.com/real/shorts/PeterWatts_Blindsight.pdfIf you like that one, his follow-up novel "Echopraxia" is also really good. You can get a lot of his works for free on his website under a CC license: www.rifters.com/real/shorts.htm

I did take a brief look at milk run. But the synopsis didn't grab me like Quarter Share. Is it set in the same universe? And I already picked up In Ashes Born. Probably bought it prematurely, but I'm enjoying Captains Share so much, I figured it'd be worth it. ]God yes. I read the lost fleet in about a month. I emailed him about it, and he actually replied saying the name of the series would be something like 'the first stars'. Even still, I was so enraptured by the fleet battles he presented, that I'm very much looking forward to this next series. I admit, I wasn't grabbed by his characterizations, or his conversations. Those fleet battles kept me coming back for more, and everything else was just gravy on top of that.

He was saying how he was trying to move away from John Geary last year. Finally giving the poor guy a rest. I guess the publisher stepped in. He's a decent guy, so if you email him, you tend to get something back. It may not be more then 'hey, thanks for reading', but I doesn't seem to be some automated email response. Or, at least, it didn't when last I emailed him. Thats my disclaimer, I haven't emailed him in six months to a year. So idk if things have changed in that time.

The Firekeeper series by Jane Lindskold is underrated, in my opinion. It's about a girl that can talk to animals and is raised by wolves, set in a medieval era world. I definitely think it deserves it's own movies or tv show, along with The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Why do people like the Wheel of Time so much? I forced myself to read a few of the books which had some interesting stuff but a lot of it was just hard to push through. Blondes and gingers as the nomadic desert peoples? Come on now that's ridiculous. Men being innately stronger than women physically AND magically? Why not throw the girls a bone? This is fantasy ffs. The Forsaken being bested by children? Really? REALLY? Fantasy world full of various European and non European cultures yet everyone is white? *rolls eyes* There's more but ill stop here. Anyone care to tell me why this series is so loved? Or why they themselves like it so much?

^^^ I'd say that was a draw for most. But some really love the lore and unending clothing descriptions. Another series I'd say is a bit under rated: It reminds me of Glenn Cook's black company. Forgotten Soldiers is the first book in the military fantasy series The Tyrus Chronicle. The Turine army is on the brink of victory against the Geneshans. Sergeant Tyrus and his unit are tasked to steal an artifact from the enemy that some believe has the power to destroy the world. Taking such power from the Geneshans would end the decade long war.
Upon their success, Tyrus’s unit is among the first wave of soldiers discharged from the army. War has robbed him of time with his wife and children, but now the life he has dreamed of every day for the last ten years is just a long journey away.
Traveling home, Tyrus finds the world he left behind changed in ways he never expected. His own countrymen view returning soldiers as a threat. His own townsmen want to forget he even existed. Danger is everywhere. His dream is in jeopardy.

I also think this series is a bit underrated because she does take a while to get each part out. IE: 3-5 years....so this series, the first book hit in 98 when I was a kid...ohmygoood.... Now the 6th book just hit...a day or two ago....

Or why they themselves like it so much? Well to be fair about the men vs women power thing, while Men were generally stronger magically, women could link their powers to accomplish things no one person could handle alone. Also, the Borderlands appeared to be Asian in inspiration. And the Seanchan were composed of all sorts of races The Aiel all being redheads never made much sense to me either, though. Especially since Robert Jordan was on record saying they were inspired by, among others, the Bedouin and Apache. The first few books were good, but later on the series dragged on and on and ON pointlessly. Honestly, the last three which were completed by Brandon Sanderson, were among the best in the series.

I read the first four Wheel of Time books in high school when I was more into the high fantasy settings than I am now. I liked the first three, but had trouble getting into the fourth - I think I ended up reading it off and on over a long period of time and eventually lost track of some of what was going on and/or got to the point of "reading" in the sense of taking in the words without actually paying attention during a middle portion. (I remember also doing that with the one Narnia book that follows the characters as adults in Narnia.) After that I guess I just didn't feel especially compelled to keep going with it.

Now that I think about it, I do actually have an unerrated series (or at least an under-read one) to recommend: Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality. You have to adjust to his style with the first book (the man never met a pun he didn't wrestle to the ground and shove into a story) and remember that it's aimed at younger folks. Once you get past the opening of On a Pale Horse, the stories follow one another and delve into some pretty deep ground. They're deceptively goofy. You really do have to read them in order, starting with the first one, though.
Disclaimer: until I went to look for a cover to include here I had no idea he'd written an eighth book for the series. I can't say whether that one is any good or not nor whether it works well with the series. I thought it was wrapped up pretty well with And Eternity.

I still get shocked at how adult Piers Anthony books are. Maybe it's because they're written with so much whimsy that it kind of coats the disturbing topics like sexual assault, being devoured alive or existential crisises. I do recommend "Finder" by Emma Bull. It's a sad but fun story about a world between worlds called Bordertown. It's a sort of modern day place where humans, elves, halflings and werewolves coexist. Now, before you roll your eyes, it does a decent job making memorable characters and the plot follows a bunch of human kids who are taking a lethal drug fully aware of the fatality in hopes of crossing over into the Elflands. It hits hard on topics of drug abuse and self-loathing to the point of harming oneself in hopes of changing that it subverts the notion that humans are special.

Is that the one that starts with a 14-year-old girl meeting some sort of alien or supernatural character and they end up on a planet with cat people or something like that? I remember giving the first book of one of Anthony's non-Xanth series a try, and deciding that I didn't like it enough to keep reading the series but did like it enough to want to finish the book, so I read in just a couple days to get it over with. That might have actually been the quickest I ever finished a book, at least at the time.

Whelp, I just finished this novel: It was a good book, really enjoyed the end of it. But the series is gone, and I don't have anything to replace it with. I do have one or two complaints about the series as a whole, but I have to admit it was a great ride through the series. Now I have to figure out what to pick up next. Maybe something fantasy...or maybe something from the mystery section. Break up a bit of the monotony of only sci-fi.

I mainly got this cause I love B5 and it turned out to be an interesting AU/Space Opera. Set in a future Rome that never fell, but instead expanded to become a galaxy-spanning empire, Accala's struggle to survive and exact her revenge will take her on a dark journey that will cost her more than she ever imagined.

This book is amazing. Got to buy it next payday. Read the sample. Baen books never fails me. Sarah Calhoun is the fifteen-year-old daughter of the Elector Andrew Calhoun, one of Appalachee’s military heroes and one of the electors who gets to decide who will next ascend as the Emperor of the New World. None of that matters to Sarah. She has a natural talent for hexing and one bad eye, and all she wants is to be left alone—especially by outsiders.
But Sarah’s world gets turned on its head at the Nashville Tobacco Fair when a Yankee wizard-priest tries to kidnap her. Sarah fights back with the aid of a mysterious monk named Thalanes, who is one of the not-quite-human Firstborn, the Moundbuilders of the Ohio. It is Thalanes who reveals to Sarah a secret heritage she never dreamed could be hers.
Now on a desperate quest with Thalanes to claim this heritage, she is hunted by the Emperor’s bodyguard of elite dragoons, as well as by darker things—shapeshifting Mockers and undead Lazars, and behind them a power more sinister still. If Sarah cannot claim her heritage, it may mean the end to her, her family—and to the world where she is just beginning to find her place.

I just realized I didn't post this. I feel silly now. My favorite book (by the same author I mentioned earlier): It's the first book in a trilogy called the Obsidian Chronicles. Dragon Weather follows a boy named Arlian whose hometown is destroyed by dragons. He's sold into slavery by looters shortly thereafter, and dedicates his life to punishing those who wronged him, be they dragon or human. It has some rather profound commentary on the nature of justice in a world wrought with violence and exploitation, mixed with a fascinating setting that has an unique take on everyone's favorite fantasy creature. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you like dark fantasy then look no further.
