Okay, here's the thing, I really, really, REALLY, hate horror! I'm one of those guys who can get easily startled by anything sudden. There have been instances in which someone lightly touches my shoulder when I don't expect it and I suddenly jump in fright. I'll refuse to watch a horror movie because the trailers always frighten me with their jump scares.
Now I don't mind psychological thrillers though. I played Alan Wake which engrossed me with its suspenseful tale and creepy imagery that questioned the character's psyche. I will probably watch the first Alien movie and I'm interested in seeing the creepy looking A Cure for Wellness. But I still refuse to play something like Five Nights at Freddy's (mostly because my little brother spoiled the whole series anyway).
I bring this up, because their is a game that I tried to play, hated, and now want to try again. It's called Outlast (aka the scariest game ever created!). When I first played it, I'll admit feeling worried in the dark hallways and having no idea what's behind a door, but once I opened one of them, a body just dropped right out of nowhere and actually caused me to jump and gasp. It was at that moment I suddenly turned off the game and never touched it again.
But now for some reason, I feel the need to go back to that game, find out what happened in that Asylum. But I just feel uncomfortable with that thought.
If any of you guys have played and FINISHED Outlast, are there any pieces of advice for how a non-horror fan can go through this game while keeping his sanity intact? Or should I just cut my losses and just watch a play-through? (at least I can handle that than actually experience being in a horror situation).

It solves one of the issues I have with horror: I'm just not scared when I have a shotgun.
Though it might be better just to watch a playthrough. Often thing sort of thing isn't really the kind of thing you'll overcome all that easily unless you want to take a long time to beat the game by playing it in very short sessions.
Alternatively sometimes having a friend with you who keeps things light can help.

It was free as an Xbox Live Gold offer. I thought I would give it a try because come on, no game can be THAT scary right? Wrong.

Same boat, almost. I've been interested in Outlast, but even just watching short videos of it scare the shit out of me. I would not be able to handle it. I'd have a heart attack or something. The simplest answer though would be to just forget about it, or face your fear and do it. No other choice.

I bought Outlast on Steam a while back, but only ever played the beginning and then got distracted by something else.
Are the scares more of the "I'm just moseying down this hallway looking for a AAAAAHHHHH HOLY SHIT WHAT WAS THAT??!?!?!!" variety, or the psychological "how can humans/ghost/monsters be this twisted and evil" variety? (Or both?)

Are the scares more of the "I'm just moseying down this hallway looking for a AAAAAHHHHH HOLY SHIT WHAT WAS THAT??!?!?!!" variety, or the psychological "how can humans/ghost/monsters be this twisted and evil" variety? (Or both?) Outlast tries to go more of the psychological route with some jump scares here and there and is fairly similar to Amnesia if you've ever played/seen that. Neither of those games give you anything to defend yourself with, so you have to rely on running away or hiding which is at least a good start to making a tense atmosphere because I can't immediately blow the head off anything that jumps out at me with my trusty shotgun. When it comes to jump scares I find that the more horror you play the less effect they have as you start to become fairly adept at actually looking at a section and going "Yep. Jumpscare is going to happen right there". Psychologically things are also dampened for me because I know the worst thing that can happen is that I have to go back to the last save point. It can make things tense, though I don't actually tend to get scared.

One game that did make me jump a few times was Dead Space, even though I was pretty much constantly "on guard" and knew it was going to be that kind of game. After I first sat down with it and played for a couple hours, by the time I stopped I was simultaneously sorry to leave it behind because I was caught up in the story and relieved that I could calm down and breathe normally (g).
Amnesia: The Dark Descent not so much, maybe because the scariness had been hyped so much, plus I had already played a demo with one of the most infamous sections (the bit where some sort of monster in the water attacks you if you don't move quickly enough). Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs I really didn't find scary at all, just disturbing.

My only problem with horror is that I laugh too much. It's really rare that something actually freaks me out in a movie or game. I have Outlast as well from the XBL free game give away. I mean to start it up one of these days.

You can man up and not be a pussy.
In all seriousness, one thing to remember is that Outlast, no matter how scary it might get, is still a video game, and thus works like a video game. By that, I mean that the scary stuff is just polygons on a TV screen that follow whatever scripts that the programmer wrote for them. If you're good at manipulating the AI or learning how it works, it becomes much less scary (which arguably defeats the purpose of the game, but YMMV on that). Also, Outlast, like every other game out there, is designed to be beaten. No matter how scary or dangerous something may seem in the game, know that there is *always* a way around it. Of course, most of it will just boil down to personal preference and how much you tend to enjoy horror-based media. I personally love it. Horror films are my favorite kind of movies, and some of the best games that I've ever experienced were survival horror. I also have pretty much no limit when it comes to fictional horror though, so nothing is too extreme for me. I will say outright though that if you're not a fan of jump scares, then don't bother with Outlast, because there are a lot of jump scares. Most of them are genuine, in that the things that jump out at you are things that you would realistically be scared of, but there are just enough fake-outs to keep it from getting repetitive.
IMO, a good horror game is like a good horror movie (for the most part, obviously there are exceptions): it's about the rising feeling of tension and dread and suspense, coupled with a well-developed atmosphere and interesting characters/locations, and as far as I'm concerned, Outlast manages all of these.

My only problem with horror is that I laugh too much. It's really rare that something actually freaks me out in a movie or game. I have Outlast as well from the XBL free game give away. I mean to start it up one of these days. It's a little short (just under 6 hours for me, just over 7 1/2 hours with the DLC), but it is quite good. Interesting backstory told through collectible files and documents that you can read. Excellent use of darkness as a game mechanic, but the no-combat rule can sometimes feel a bit forced when you walk into an area full of stuff that any other person could use to make improvised weapons, at least. The AI for most enemies is somewhat simple (not terrible, but fairly predictable), but one enemy in particular seems more competent than most at finding you in hiding spots. The atmosphere is top notch though, and for a relatively early indie game for this console generation, it has very good visuals. Also excellent sound design, particularly in how most enemies have audible tells and hints as to where they might be located in the pitch black darkness (but I also played the game with very high quality headphones, so I had a distinct advantage in that regard over most people). That said, it does kind of fall into the typical horror game tropes and cliches, like a monster jumping out at you after picking up a plot-important item, or spawning a monster that chases you once you walk a little bit down a hallway and forcing you to run. All things considered though, I would say that it is worth it. I got it during the free weekend, but if I ever feel like playing it again in the future, I would not be against buying it on Steam or something.
