I've seen other people say that...I don't understand either. What did they expect? a 40-something year old virgin? How is that better/preferable?? *sigh* One guess is that the dead wife trope is used so much to the point that any emotional connection the dead spouse had never existed so it's like spitting on past loves for the sake of cheap angst. Or maybe Thane's story sounds like he never got over her. To be honest, I'd feel more awkward about how Kolyat would feel. I guess... it's not like I'm not aware that Thane is the illegitimate child of Carth Onasi, from Kotor, and Sky from Jade Empire. But, in my experience, you don't have to scratch too deep to start seeing common thematics across fictional media. Ditching things because of that may make you miss some interesting surprises... Oh well... more Thane for me then!

Oh well... more Thane for me then! I had a really silly image of Carth and Sky as a couple who adopted Thane as a child. Which would explain so much! Either way, I still find it strange that Thane would be seen as though he's still married and devoted to another woman. It's not like Irikah died recently. What's funny is that I've noticed that there's not a single Mass Effect romance for straight women that doesn't have the guy talking about a past female love right before you lock in a romance with them. Kaidan-Rana, Jacob-Miranda, Thane-Irikah, Garrus-turian scout. For crying out loud, is there some belief that women want to hear about a past flame whenever there's romantic interest?

SWTOR romances for the most part avoid the talk about the important female relative or ex (with Doc making up for it). I guess it supposed to demonstrate that the li has experience and feelings. Normally bio li are older than the female pc, with a notable exception of Torian,

My feelings exactly, though it's not so much the species, it's the love-story that I have really liked. I'd love to have a great experience like that in Andromeda.

I'm looking forward to Andromeda, but at the same time I'm really annoyed because we didn't really get a good look to the Milky way. In the whole trilogy the only planet we get to visit that is not a wasteland or under attack is Illium! So, story wise, I can understand that not all races will go to Andromeda...it doesn't make it any easier to leave them behind though.

I am interested to see what they will come up with. But, certainly, Thane's romance gets huge props from me. Really livened up the play-through for me.

I've never played femshep, but I watched the romance on YT. Not afraid to admit I shed some tears... No, I have not purchased any of the DLCs, just downloaded the free ones. I am thinking of buying the story-expanding ones for the second run.
I like Thane's romance because it is a relationship that it is not modeled on anything remotely realistic, like going out on a date and I love it that from the start it is impossible to go down the marriage route. A lot of BioWARE romance for females is about a boy next door with a laundry list of problems, that you need to clean up and then you marry him. Thane has it all figured out, he is pretty much done living, and he is certainly his own character. And, the Shepard is left with two attractive choice to make. Moving on without cheating, or remaining unattached because the real love of her life is now behind. It fits great with the conclusion of the story I am looking forward to, the Shepard now indeed coming to the end of her purpose, after she has lived. I know some folks call the romance and the character sentimental, and the love-story rushed or unfinished, but I find it appealing, rational and complete. I find it so satisfying, that I have no desire to click any other flirting choices. And I normally play the field as much as I can in the videogames, because I find the choices 'meh'.

I'll take this as an invitation to join this far too tiny fanclub. Where have all the Thane lovers gone!? Can't imagine there wouldn't be more of them. Thane is my favourite Mass Effect romance. Kaidan is sweet and all, but he just didn't have the same emotional impact on me, even though I enjoyed his ME3 content very much, whereas Thane was so... mistreated, especially before the Citadel DLC. Also, Thane is just so sexy and suave (to the extend that I spent hours creating custom wallpapers of him to grace my PC background for years ) Therefore, I'd like to share some more videos (the kind that gets you really emotional, I apologize in advance )

There is a part of me that clearly sees Thane and Shepard reuniting in the afterlife, together at last, all lovey dovey... and then there is that part of my brain that thinks of the awkwardness that will result when Irikah shows up... and if it wasn't awkward enough, my Shepard also had a previous love that died, so he shows up also... I can clearly see the four of them by the seashore and the awkward silence...

I have to admit, as much as I hate BioWare's dead wife trope by now, this problem never occured to me But there are such cute pictures of their final reuniting... ...wouldn't want that spoiled, would we? Just in case, we could resort to imagining certain ME3 events were all part of a bad bad dream and this is how it actually turned out (biological incompatibilities aside ):

Pfft, pretty sure the Salarians owe my Shep a favor or 20. They could totally overcome those biological incompatibility problems. Headcanon is my happy place.

After a long while, I began a new ME playthrough. I thought I was over Thane and I could safely romance Garrus or just anybody else not in immediate danger of dying, but noooope! It's been years and I'm still not over it! Shrios hell, here I come.

I'm playing Mass Effect 2 for the first time, and although I like Thane's character a lot, my Shepard isn't romantically interested in him. I thought I was carefully avoiding romantic options, but I still ended up with Shepard walking over to talk to Thane after a mission and then exchanging something along the lines of both of them saying they couldn't get the other off their mind. That's going to be a little difficult to headcanon as two friends talking. And he calls her Siha, something I'm getting mixed internet messages about whether it is romantic only or not. So, anyway, is my Shepard doomed to a tragic romance with Thane now? I'm really bad at rejecting romances that already started. They make me feel guilty. This is how Shepard and Kaiden had a thing in the first Mass Effect and Liara nearly killed me.

Thane calls non-romance Shepard "Siha" one time only. If he continues to call her that, you are definitely on the romance path. It's been a while since I ran my Thane-mance, but I wouldn't call it tragic in ME2. It's quite touching and fairly intense.
If you aren't interested in Thane, who would you romance instead? Are you still in a relationship with Liara? (If you don't have LotSB installed, you might not actually know the answer to that question. )

I was speaking of his romance as a whole when I called it tragic. I've never played the games before, but I am incredibly spoiled as to what happens and... well, I can't imagine playing through a romance that ends like that, and doing it unspoiled for the first time. It's too sad. The closest thing I've ever played through was Alistair sacrificing himself to kill the Arch demon (a sacrifice my Warden expected to make). I was going to romance Garrus on suggestion, but the first "flirt" is so forward and not like the professional Shepard I had been playing as. I couldn't pick it >.< I'm weak. Maybe I'll load a save after watching some other Shepard do it on YouTube. Or not. Single is fun too! And it wasn't Liara I ended up romancing in the first one, it was Kaidan (definitely accidentally though. I didn't get much from the romance and would have been fine being single). Liara I just rejected... and felt bad about doing so, even though I couldn't recall ever flirting with her or signalling that I'm interested in a romantic relationship.

The Garrus romance gets a ton better in ME3. If you can get past the inter-species awkwardness of the start of it in ME2, it's so worth it. I love the Thane romance. I get through it by ignoring what happens in ME3 completely, and falalaing my way into headcanon and fanfic land. It's happy here. They really screwed Thanemancers over in ME3.

I'm not the biggest fan of Garrus' romance, but it's not bad. Thane's, though, I still really like even with the inevitable -- and even then it still has good content in 3. Even if it hurts.I was speaking of his romance as a whole when I called it tragic. I've never played the games before, but I am incredibly spoiled as to what happens and... well, I can't imagine playing through a romance that ends like that, and doing it unspoiled for the first time. Liara I just rejected... and felt bad about doing so, even though I couldn't recall ever flirting with her or signalling that I'm interested in a romantic relationship. Well, Liara is THE ninjamancer of Mass Effect 1 -- as in you can tell her no but it might not take, especially if you're trying to be single. And just FYI paragon/top speech options are often the "flirts" so that's probably how you started with Thane. Although it should be obvious, because Shep expresses wanting more than friendship to initiate the romance path.
