Varric , Aveline, and Anders.
Seriously, whoever voted for Sebastian needs to go to Hall of Shame.

Every party needs Varric. I feel like I'm playing the game wrong if he's not there!
That was the problem with Sebastian - he's not Varric.

Indeed; he's a believer but not a zealot and he has a good sense of humor. Pity he's not a romance option for males. As for the OP's question: Varric (strange since in Inquisition I almost never have him with me) Fenris or Carver when available (I'd have Aveline with me all the time but she's Guard-Captain so it's not in character to have her travel with you outside of her own missions) Merril or Anders for the mage spot (although if I don't romance him I tend to leave him at his clinic - except for the Deep Roads expedition) I can't stand Isabella so I never bother with her; she's a backstabbing bitch who always betray you in the end anyway.

Yes, but would a great disappointment, he leave at the last fight... Anyway, he's very interesting. He really wants to be such a pious man, whom he seems, but that so hard to him. I like his fight with his demons (desire, envy, and vengeance), and when finally, the vengeance defeats him. I like Isabela, sadly in the current playthrough, I lose her. So hard to rival her. Maybe next time.

Varric and Anders are musthaves for me. As the third companion, I would probably go with Aveline. The reasons: I love those characters the most from all companions and they are the most useful imo. Isabella and Fenris aren't bad too, but I just like Varric and Aveline more. I have to edit that: Varric is still my top pick, but now I have Isabella and Fenris very often in the party, I don't use Anders much anymore and generally don't use Merrill apart from her quests, so I mostly play a mage myself this days, which makes my party setup: Varric, Isabella and Aveline and Fenris in equal parts, Carver, if available.

Pretty much gonna agree with the reddit results.Varric,Aveline and Anders. Not because i like them the most, but mostly due to party synergy.

Aveline iirc was the only one who had indomitable 100% stun and knockdown resistance Isabella when I'm not playing rogue she's my pick. Varric is cool but Aveline + Isabella banter is too much to pass up Anders the only healer programming him to switch between vengence and panacea was one of the most fun things I've done in DA2
When space allows it I slide Merrill in there since she was also fun to program.

I roll a DW rogue, so in all three games I always had one tank and one healer mage in the party. In DA2, that was Aveline and Anders. To complete the squad, the third would generally be just my favorite companion. In DA2, that would of course be Varric .

1: Varric - Every leading lady(I like my Hawkes to have soft bits) needs a canny lancer to come up with advice, cover stories and one-liners while she's busy getting things done. Also locks.
2: Fenris - C'mon, a cynical elf with actual worldly experience, a dancer's body, musical voice, killer fashion sense, bad-ass tattoos and a huge sword? Down girl, down! Also, he's useful when negotiating with Qunari.
3: Bethany - Malcolm and Leandra didn't raise no damn layabouts. Besides, she's too cute to leave at home. And "The Hawke Sisters" just has a ring to it. I usually just go through the roster for whoever makes sense when Beth isn't available, and occasionally exchange Fenris too. Bela for criminal/non-Qunari stuff, Anders for occult/magy shit, Merril for Wounded-Coast-hiking, Aveline for law enforcement-esque quests, and Sebastian for whenever I want someone normal to talk to without getting mesmerized by chest hair.

Varric for me then Isabella and Aveline. I'd be a mage. Aveline can be the tank Iasbella and Varric for the humour.

Dual wielder's I often find aer almost like having secondary warriors. Especially if they can land the first strike from stealth. She's not a tank like Aveline but she knows how to hurt the bad guys.

In DA2 it's not so much of a problem so sometimes I go with the second rogue who acts as like a second warrior. That role is usually filled by Isabella with Varric as a ranged rogue. But again it depends on what I am as well. I tend to do it that way because you only really have 2 warriors to pick from in Fenris and Aveline yes you can have Carver if you'er a mage in Act 1 as well but with regards the sibling they're not really there after Act 1 so I don't really count them. Because after Act 1 you can only really use them in the DLC's and the finale in truth. I started my latest playthrough earlier as a warrior but I'm now going to have to put my playthrough on hold because the hard drive I have the game installed on has just died shame really as I've just recently figured out how to get mods working on DA2 and was trying some of them out. It was just hairstyle mods for now but I had some other mods I'd have liked to try as well on other playthrough's as I would need to play a mage for one of my other ones .So I'm going to need to replace the hard drive before I can continue. I should be able to because it'#s my secondary hard drive that's died and the save file is on my main one. It's just a case of reinstalling everything once my replacement comes

I personally have an external hard disk on which I put my files (artworks, word documents etc.), I also use it as a back up for my save files I make a habit to make a copy of my save files when I finish playing for the day, that way if something where to happen to my pc I still have all my save games though it sounds like you already do something similar so disregard this rambling of mine
I always do find that in DA2 the rogues kind of outnumber the other two classes if you also happen to play as one
only time where it's perfectly balanced it when you play a mage or a warrior (3 of each class) but you're right about the siblings, still kind of wish there was a way to interact with them a bit more before you're thrown into things, sometimes they (and Leandra) sort of feel like they're just there if you know what I mean

Unfortunately I didn't have any backups of my DA2 mods I downloaded recently but that's because I prefer to test them and see whether I like them before I make any backups. I have now just redownloaded them now onto an external drive while I remembered what they were mostly so I can just transfer them straight to the new drive once it's in to try to make it easier. I don't normally keep save files though as once I'm finished a game I normally delete it. Or at least I do tend to delete the save files. I often keep the ME and DA games themselves installed though as I'm often returning to them to do new playthroughs. Hopefully I should get it tomorrow as I put it on fast delivery so it shouldn't hold me back too much just means I'm down £100.

I mostly choose them based on the friendship and rivalry points they'll get in that quest.
For the final quest of each act, I always bring Varric, the LI and Aveline/The sibling. You know, the people closest to Hawke.

I mostly choose them based on the friendship and rivalry points they'll get in that quest. For the final quest of each act, I always bring Varric, the LI and Aveline/The sibling. You know, the people closest to Hawke.Especially if Aveline prevented Carver to join the Guards... Not every of my Hawkes was her closest friend. And she asks Anders to help to catch apostates... Hawke can be an apostate too, and not every Hawke is happy with this attitude... etc... So: Aveline's nice, a friend, but not necessarily the closest friend of Hawke. She's not that perfect as it seems at first sight. And this is why she's good as character.
