I'm playing through DA:I with a default world state in order to pass the time before Mass Effect releases. Now usually Alistair is Hawke's contact for me, but this Stroud guy is giving me some major daddy vibes and I ain't mad at it.
Is it bad that I sacrificed Hawke for some rando for pure shallow reasons? 😂 Whoops.

No. If you like him. I admit, I always sacrificed him. So: sorry Stroud, and your amazing mustache! source(But true, I prefer to use Loghain for this purpose.) By the way, he really deserves a topic!

I always sacrifice him as well. I do like him but I have no idea who he is... Was he in DA2? 'cause I never finished that one. I usually make sure Stroud is in my world state because I hate having to decide between Hawke and Alistair (I always end up picking Alistair because I don't care about Hawke but then I hate seeing Varric upset)

Stroud

Yes, Stroud is in DA2.
In that game, at the end of the first act (there are three acts), you go into the Deep Roads. If you take your sibling along, they get infected with the Blight. Anders (ex-Warden) is the one that supplied you with maps of the DR. If you bring Anders along, he says he knows where the Wardens are and that bringing sibling to them MIGHT offer a chance for survival if they undergo the Joining (becoming a Warden). You get to meet Stroud during this scene. He has a rather romantic view of what the Wardens are about, sacrifice and so forth, and seems to truly believe it.
If you have an import with Alistair as king, or as a drunk, you get to see Stroud again (along with your Warden sibling) at the end of act 2, during the Qunari attack. Hawke asks them to stay and help, but Stroud says that Wardens don't get involved with those sorts of things.
That is Stroud's full involvement in DA2. Much of it depends on player choice. If you don't bring sibling on the Deep Roads mission, you won't see him. If you don't bring Anders on the DR mission, you won't see him. You only see him if you bring both sibling AND Anders on the DR mission. And as mentioned, seeing him again depends on your import choices with Alistair.
I actually like Stroud quite a bit, but, yeah... I sacrifice him every time as well. It's not even that I'm favoring Hawke, even if avoiding the terrible dead Hawke cutscene with Varric is worth it, but as I think that is a fitting end for him, redeeming the Grey Wardens via his sacrifice. And my Inquisitor gets to yell at the Wardens afterward and call them idiots; win-win!

I think more personal, if Stroud saved Hawke's sibling's life.

I like his voice. Very pretty. Would love to go on adventures with him, just to hear him talk for hours. I've never saved him in favor of Hawke, but since I prefer leaving Hawke in the Fade he gets to live another day on quite a few occasions in my game.

In my world states Loghain is usually the Warden ally for 3 reasons 1)I think he is too cool of a character to die in origins 2)Sacrificing him iş relativly easier since he has lived through too much already 3) I cannot leave Hawke behind so after leaving Loghain in the Fade Strout is still alive in that world and can lead the Orlaisian Wardens

But that does mean I get to hug Varric!

I nearly always have Stroud as my option because most of my DAO play throughs either have someone doing the DR with Morrigan or doing the US (Loghain). I haven't done my Alistair still in the Wardens and romancing the Hero yet mostly because of the choice in the Fade. Even so, I always think it makes more sense for the Warden character (whoever they may be) to be the one to stay in the Fade. I never get the logic that Hawke thinks Corypheus is somehow their responsibility and even less why that entails them fighting the Nightmare Demon since Corypheus is clearly still out there in the world. The whole demon army thing is the Warden's responsibility so it does seem right that a Warden should take on the head of that army.
It also annoyed me that if you do spare Stroud (or whoever) and don't banish the Wardens, he still leaves for Weishauppt. I thought the whole point of letting him live was to rebuild the Wardens by giving them a responsible leader, so what is he doing leaving them without guidance when the whole southern branch of the order is in tatters? So basically sacrificing Hawke was for nothing, given that what follows in Weishauppt is exactly the same no matter who goes there to report events. At least with Hawke alive they finally come back. With Stroud alive it would appear he disappears into the Anderfels never to be seen again.
