Do as ye will in the prologue. Siblings seem to hate or love you based on their personality regardless of what you do and the only other decision regarding the other companion can be overcome points wise later. Note: When I say “anyone” keep in mind your chosen LI so you can get to know them through banter- unless, of course, they’re on the no no list. Extra Note: i check shops but rarely buy anything. Money is super tight in Act 1 so I rely on drops 99% of the time and save my money for potions. ACT ONERecruitment- Business Discussion: Take Anyone with you to the Hanged Man Tavern in Lowtown. Tavern is also amusing to overhear the drunks and talk to the Barkeep. Go behind bar and all the rooms for various loot to sell.
- A New Home: You’re already in the neighborhood due to above quest. Visit Home. Talk to family. Check for Letters: This is where extra missions show up. Click on dog and other clickable areas for Hawke Banter. Check your special Deliveries chest. Don’t do any DLC, you don’t even have a full party to choose from yet.
- A Friend in the Guard: Take anyone with you to Viscount’s Keep. Nothing much interesting to overhear. Check Guard Rooms for loot. You now have Aveline, a full party. --Do her mini Quest with Aveline Varric Bethany.
- Birthright: Bring Sibling and anyone else.
At this point, you may start running into random battles. If you kill enough of certain mobs, you get a chance at extra mobs. Since there is no other way to make money or get experience points, I recommend seeking out these mobs. Mostly they come out at night. Also, start keeping an eye out for herbs/metal/lyrium deposits and loot around the edges of areas. - Tranquilty; Multiparts. Lirene’s Imports in Lowtown: Bring Aveline, Bethany/Carver, or Varric. Bethany can potentially get the most points here. Sell your junk and buy the Frost Rune. Also: if you donate money, you get XP. Head to Darktown- Use Party Switching Desk outside before heading in. DO NOT bring Carver. Do bring Bethany if you have her. Chantry: Bring Bethany and anyone else. You now have Anders; being a healing mage, he will help with the rest of the recruitment missions beautifully.
- Fools Rush In: Go Back to the Hanged Man with anyone. Talk to Varric. Go to the Chantry with anyone.
- Bait and Switch; Multiparts. Change your party again before leaving the Hanged man outside to Lowtown to talk to Anso. Don’t bring Carver or Aveline. Bring Varric for flavor and Isabella for possible points. Go into Hanged Man/Home and change party. Bring Aveline and anyone else to “Abandoned House”. Then bring anyone for the rest of the quest. If you are a mage, you are doomed to get rivalry points with Fenris, literally no way around it. Don’t worry. We’ll put a crack in his stubborn streak yet. Go to the Mansion and have a solo chat with Fenris.
I always save this tricky one for last. It’s tricky, because now you need to ask yourself how your Hawke feels about spirits/demons and blood magic. It becomes even more complex when Anders and Bethany are being a bit of a hypocrite about Justice not being a spirit/demon. If you consider Anders spirit okay, why would you not consider Merril’s spirit stuff okay? Therefore I have given an A and a B. A for Anti Demon/spirit and Anti Blood Magic and B for “eh, spirits and Blood magic can be useful.” But hopefully you can bring Fenris for excellent flavor text! - Long Way Home A: Bring Anders, Fenris, Bethany if your Hawke is against blood magic/demons.
- Long Way Home B: Isabella and Varric are 100% safe. Aveline can be a net zero. So I suggest those three.
- Either way, BEFORE heading up the mountain, Sell your collected junk to him and buy what you want. And grab that elfroot by the entrance.
- Duty: If you have Prince DLC, bring anyone to the Duty Mission at the Docks. Clear this area of all the mobs while you’re here. You’ve already killed the company on Sundermount incidentally. When you go to the Wounded Coast, you see Spiders up on your right, you’d run into JAvaris Tintop and pick up a quest while you’re at it. Apparently you can’t avoid it. Isabella/Anders will add comments if you brought them. Leave this Scene Area and click on the Wounded Coast again on the map. Take the first fork right and right again to kill the Company. There is spindleweed on the way. Then leave to home, if injured, or to Hightown to turn in the Duty mission at the Chantry where Sebastian lives.
Click on the glitter and talk to Elthina. If Aveline is in your party you’ll get points for being non religious.
You have now recruited everyone except Sebastian, who you just worked with. But he is not recruitable until Act 2. Next Part will have party suggestions for the Act One NON recruitment missions.

Only Anders' personal experience has given him that distinction. That Bethany goes, "Aw, you tortured hero you," is OOC for my understanding of the religion. Bethany doesn't have the personal Experience that Anders had. Her reactions should be closer to Sebastian's. But that's not the way it was written.

Anders: I just wondered what relation there is between spirits and demons. Demons are a worry to any mage. Justice: I do not know what makes demons as they are. But did Malcom read and believe that book and then pass on that idea to his daughter? You can head canon it either way. Anders is definitely been adjusted by his experience, he can't be held up as the typical opinion on the matter. If anything, his initial questions towards Justice show that he had the "typical opinion" that spirits are demons and vice versa. Additionally, there are far more demons of desire and fear than there are of the virtues.

Said you could canon either way. But you and I both know some of the writing doesn't make sense. Like Anders being happy that Fenris was sold back into slavery and no one else making a fuss about it. Is it so hard to believe they stretched belief regarding Bethany's support of Anders? They needed someone to support him, no one else does, literally.

Act One Missions
At this point, go home. Heal Injuries. Click on Dog again. Check your mail. Talk to Family if they want to talk. You could possibly do DLC at this point, but I don’t recommend it yet. Let’s go walk around town picking up and doing missions! I have tried to clump these together correctly to reduce loading screens. I have also considered “narrative” importance. Enjoy the banter.
Go to Hightown: I’m going to assume you will accept all the quests. So, DON’T Bring Isabella but DO bring Varric + anyone. (to save a Loading Screen, you can pick Varric, Fenris, and Merril/Anders now.) Talk to Hubert the Merchant, click on the help wanted poster, then go up the stairs to talk to Jerk Husband. Check the shops for stuff you may want. Then talk to the Magistrate near the Chantry. Don't click on Athenril.
Go to the Gallows: Bring Fenris and Merril and Anders for flavor full discussion. Go shopping. Click on people. Like Macha, who is looking for her brother. Talk to the herbalist about collecting herbs for him.and, if you wish, the Templar Recruit nearby. Talk to the herbalist about collecting herbs for him and then you can leave.
Go back to the Dalish camp With Merril. You can talk to the Craftsman and the location of the herbalist request from him.
Finder’s Keepers: Multiparts. The Hanged Man. Talk to Isabella. Then Bring Isabella, Aveline + anyone else to talk to Martin in the back. Change party before going to Aden at the Docks. Don’t bring Aveline, but Bring Isabella, who will give you a tip about a different way to do the quest. This different way doesn’t get points or dialogue, though, so meh to me. Warehouse during Day: If playing Sarcastic Hawke so far, bring Merril and Varric + anyone else.
If you made Bhelen King, then there is a tiny battle/scene in this area you can pop by for. Clear out the docks, get your reward, then.Go back to the Hanged Man. change party before walking back to talk to Martin about his cargo. Take issue with Cargo? Bring Aveline and NOT Isabella + anyone else. Don’t care about Cargo? Bring Isabella and Varric + anyone else

Bethany support Anders, and as I see she really likes him, and she's not stupidly naive, just try to believe in the bona fide. But she's not ignorant or idiot. This is why I like her, despite that a bit boring, good girl.

Loose Ends Two Options depending on Prologue Choice: If you chose to work for Athenril in Prologue, you will find her in Hightown during the Day. there is a trick for points you can do. Bring Carver and Aveline +1 to talk to her. Refuse the quest. Switch Carver and Aveline out of the group for anyone else, then go talk to her again and accept the quest. if you don't want to bother with trick, and just want to accept the quest right off, Don't bring Carver and Aveline to talk to her. Afterwards, switch party again for Aveline, Sibling, + anyone and do mission. Afterwards, you talk to Atehnril again. - Telling the truth: Bring Aveline but NOT Varric.
- Lie to her: Varric, Isabella, + anyone else.
If you instead chose to work for Meeran: You find him at night in Lowtown. Sarc Hawke can get extra points with Varric. Otherwise, bring Varric, Aveline, Anders or Carver for mission. After mission completion, you go talk to Meeran again so change party again. - Tell Meeran the Truth: Take Carver and Aveline + anyone else.
- Lie to him: Varric, Isabella, + anyone else.
Magistrate's Orders: Bring Merril, Sibling, and Isabella.Head to Abandoned Ruins. Anything you say outside won’t lock you into anything, so RP freely. Go into the Ruins--Make sure to loot the spiders. All done. Sarcastic response to Elven Father is Hilarious so highly suggested. Go back to Magistrate in Hightown and spill the outcome OR wait until you're back in town for something else.
Next- The Alienage in Lowtown.

I stress that this Walkthrough is about maximizing points with companions. I like to get everyone's bars locked by mid to late Act 2 so I can start bringing anyone I want and ignore points. Considering all their varying personalities...and playing the Standard Pro Mage RIghts Hero...There can be a lot of party switches. So here it is, Wayward Son.Don’t bring Fenris to the Alienage. Speak to Arianni. Next, Speak to Vincento in Lowtown first- with Bethany if you have her. Then to thrask in Gallows with Merril + anyone else, but recommend Aveline, and Anders if you can handle changing your party from the last mission. Follow the Quest points until it tells you to go to Danzig. Make sure to loot the final area, as you can never return. PARTY SWITCH: Go get Fenris! Aveline, Sibling. Now talk to Danzig in Darktown. ASk Fenris to help! Aggro Hawke does something cool with Danzig and Sarcastic Hawke has funny banter afterwards. PARTY SWITCH: DON’T bring Fenris or Aveline. Bring Varric + anyone else to the Slaver’s Caverns. Keep an eye out for Mushroom and Spindleweed nodes. Now Rogue Hawke has an extra option here, which I like, but it doesn’t get companion points. *Technically, one COULD get friendship points from Fenris on this part of the mission, but I’d have to spoil you for you to know whether you could. So, I just recommend not bringing him. PARTY SWITCH: Back to the Alienage with Anders, Merril, Isabella/Bethany. Bethany gets a lot of points here, but if she is already maxed or close just go with Isabella. Do NOT bring Aveline, Carver, or Fenris. Visit Merril while you're here. An Errant Letter: Go to t he Gallows. You got options- Bring Anders, Aveline, or Merril. You can get points with Bethany and Varric too, but these two will like you no matter what (may even be close to maxed) so don’t worry about ‘em. Now that that is all done, sell your junk and go shopping if you feel like. 6 more significant quests for act one!

The First Sacrifice: Go to the Blooming rose with you choice of these combinations for funny comments: Isabella/Fenris or Isa/Merril or Isa/Merril/Varric. Go to Darktown with Varric + anyone else BUT Isabella. Go to Hightown to speak to Jerk Husband with anyone. Optional: Go back to Blooming Rose with Isabella but don’t bring Aveline/Sibling. You can tell the elven prostitute about his lover or sex him up. One or the other, unfortunately.
Enemies Among Us: This one is tricky, but can't say why without spoiling. I'll assume the player won't respond well to someone trying to kill them and have chosen companions as appropriate to that assumed reaction.
Anyone can go to Wilmod’s camp, but you can save a party switch by letting it be Isabella/Sibling/Anders. Pick up the Embyrium here. Bring Isabella, Sibling, Anders to the Blooming Rose. PARTY SWITCH: Don’t bring Aveline. Bring Varric and Merril + anyone else to the Blood Mage Hideout. If you make Anders the 3rd character, you can just keep the same party and skip next switch. Keep an eye out for the deathroot. PARTY SWITCH: to the Gallows with Anders, Merril, Varric/Aveline
Bonus Round: Leave to go home/bar, then reenter Gallows with a new party to talk to Cullen. Support the Templars? Bring Aveline, Carver, Fenris. Think they need to clean up their act? Bring Anders and Aveline.

If you haven't made elf root potions the few times I've sent you home, I suggest doing so now.
The Bone Pit: Bring Aveline and anyone else you want. I suggest your strongest. Grab the elfroot before heading in. Make sure to grab lyrium and deep mushroom in the caves. Before exiting to Ledge, prep the party and save. It’s dragon time. Make sure to loot Dragon. Go back to Hubert. He’ll offer you something you should accept, then give you another quest.
Get Back To Work: Find the workers. If you are sarcastic Hawke and gave them a raise, bring Varric and DOn’T bring Isabella. Otherwise, bring anyone.
I like to head canon that since we’re out of Kirkwall Proper, we can head to Sundermount and find the other Herbal Item on the fetch quest list. But if your party is pretty roughed up, return home to heal your injuries for free before heading out again. Besides, at this point, you can start making some good stuff. Potions, poisons, some runes. Click on Dog, check your mail, talk to family if they want to talk.
4 more Significant Missions before end of Act One.

*Note: I need to verify, but this The First Sacrifice may be best before Enemies Among Us due to location. I'm not sure I even can verify, so ... Moving this to before that mission.
I batched ALL the Qunari Missions at the end, which will prime your mind for Act 2. Mwuahahahaha.

If you bring Fenris, Merrill and Isabella to Magistrates Orders and ask Fenris to do his special fisty thing Isabella and Merrill will get 10 point approval. True story, but Fenris receives no points either way, whereas the sibling WOULD..... AND, on top of that... Isabella gets LESS points if Fenris does the fisty thing instead of Hawke.

True, Fenris doesn't get any points and Isabella gets 5 point less but it is awesome to see him do that!I never care about the points for siblings. Ok, I see where you're going with this playthrough. I agree ^^ And if the sibling is Bethany, she may even be almost max at this point. Whereas anyone pro mage would be failing with Carver by the end of Act 1. But this is spoiler free for Pro Mage Standard Hero with focus on companion friendship points only. And I've recommended that if a companion/sibling were max, they can start bringing other folks. ^^

Carver better, if Hawke going to bed with elf guy, Bethany better if Hawke finally doesn't. Anders good if Hawke speaks with the madám – rivalry, s/he accepts the offer. I don't know, how but I missed Anders' reaction with Reinhardt...)
For Idunna interesting reactions: all company but Fenris shows some sensitivity to magic, and mages can stop Idunna, if Hawke asks for it. If not, non-mage Hawke also can save him/herself, but only can kill Idunna, not spare her and sent her to the Templars. Anders here can give rivalry, if Hawke sends Idunna to the Templars. I think, also Bethany and Merrill. Fenris can give friendsip? Perhaps. I'm not sure.

This is a guide for Pro Mage Standard Hero with focus on companion friendship points only. This mission, other then when talking to the Jerk Husband, gives no points to anyone. So my party suggestions were all for the listed banter on the Wiki. I'm keeping my husband in mind- he wouldn't sex the elf, but the player in this thread might, and since I'm pushing for friendship, then the optional sexing of the elf DOES give Rival points to Aveline and any Sibling. Not anyone else, according to Wiki.

The Unbidden Rescue: Go to Hightown with Aveline, Isabella, and Carver/anyone else. Depending on stuff, Aveline may come out net zero, or +10 but thing is, I always find the battle coming up a bit of a struggle so she’s useful. While you are in Hightown, you can let that Magistrate know you didn’t do what he wanted you to and click on a poster. If you can’t find the poster, just go into the Viscount’s Keep and walk upstairs and to the left. Yay, no party switching for the whole mission, enjoy.
Blackpowder Promise: I’d take Aveline, Fenris, and Isabella to The Wounded Coast. Aggro Hawke gets a special option with Tal-Vashoth. If you spared Avernus in DAO, then there is a Grey Warden Body to loot. Silverite and lyrium nodes in the cavern, with loot throughout. After all done, go back to the Arishok. Scene. Be sure to talk to Arishok again right after to ask questions.
Shepherding Wolves: Go to Lowtown with Anders, Merril, Carver/Aveline. NOT Varric. Do Mission. (I find this one of the more philsopically haunting missions.) Go home to heal, check your mail, pet your dog.. Then go back to Petrice in Lowtown with Varric, Carver if you have him, and NOT Aveline.
Check your Quest Book for any random stuff that may show up. There are extra quests of killing things, dropping off random items for random folk, and Drop off your herbal tasks at The Gallows. Make Runes, Potions, Etc. It now occurs to me that each companion gave you a personal mini quest. I will go back and add that to recruitment post.
OPTIONAL: Friends in Low Places only appears if you don’t have enough money for the expedition. There are no drawbacks to taking it, but I feel disappointed in myself if I do. haha
OPTIONAL: Mark of the Assassin can be attempted now but can be done in ANY Act. Some folks day it makes better narrative sense in Act 1 but it has one of the hardest Optional Bosses in the game + DLCs and may not be able to be won before you are much higher leveled. If you’re in it for the story, and not the fight, you can go do it. Some folks like the love interest banter if you do it later though. I have only done it in Act 3 and so can’t comment about other times for it personally.
Next, the Deep Roads, which is the final Mission of Act One.

The Deep Roads Expedition For one of the largest missions, it's kinda funny how not complicated it is regarding companions.
IF you bring a sibling to the Deep Roads you MUST bring Anders. If you are NOT bringing sibling to the Deep Roads, that gives you 2 empty slots to choose from. Yes, Two, not three. Varric is locked in for this quest. Since you’re already locked into a companion who is a bit of a sub par archer on a rather large mission… choose carefully. The only companions who can GAIN friendship on this mission is Anders, Aveline, and Varric. Not a bad combination, a tank, a healer, and the forced archer companion.. but if you’re already high up on the friendship bars for those two companions, you can let something else guide your decision. Prepare yourself. Head over to hightown to talk to Bartrand. And Good Luck. Keep an eye out for: 2 Deep Mushroom, 1 Silverite, 2 Raw Lyrium, 1 Orichalcum.
Okay, that's all I got in me for the day. 7 hours of DA2 spoiler free writing with the points crunching and all I got done is Act 1. Thing is that, we only have to do this halfway or maybe all of act 2, which means we won't have to do it AT ALL for act 3. Hopefully this will help your PT go more smoothly, will ensure my husband doesn't cause sadness to me when he plays, and I may just use this myself for my current playthrough.

I did some playing today (all my recruitment missions are done, plus Finders Keepers.) The game makes you encounter people sooner than I'd have liked. Also, way more Resource nodes than the Wiki Mentioned off hand. Made a hand full of edits to my original posts.
Did you get your DLCs figured out? I'm having no issue on normal mode with most of these fights but I have the gear from the Special Deliveries box.
