Btw, one product and/or service that I can heartily endorse is The Man from Earth, a great small budget sci-fi movie form 2007. It's mostly a conversation between a handful of college professors, as it turns out that one of them may or may not have a rather surprisingly extensive and eventful past, but don't be scared by that seeminglyy boring premise, it's a captivating film! If you're looking for smart sci-fi instead of just spaceships, monsters and strangely coloured explosions, this is it.

But then again, I wouldn't really count many space operas and superhero movies as sci-fi either, yet people do.

Lots of good stuff in here, but here's my list in no particular order:
2001: A Space Odyssey Alien & Aliens Blade Runner Brazil The Fifth Element Forbidden Planet The Thing Terminator & Terminator 2 Ghost in the Shell & GitS: Innocence Dredd Star Wars 1 to 7 Edge of Tomorrow Dune
There are way more that I like, but wouldn't consider my favorite for one reason or another.
As for series:
Battlestar Galactica Star Trek TNG, Voyager and DS9 X-Files?
I don't really watch series much anymore. I was starting to like Minority Report but they killed it after one season. I am waiting for the season 2 of The Man in the White Castle, which is more alt history than SciFi as far as I know. I have yet to watch The Expanse, but what I've read doesn't really satisfy my taste.
There's an old and obscure series called Earth 2 that I really liked. It had its bad moments and plot issues, but overall it was quite interesting: it was about a bunch of people that, with their own money, escaped Earth for a known habitable planet that the government wanted to keep off limits, all of this just to make the kids breathe and live better because Earth was mega polluted and stuff. Things go wrong and they crash land on the planet so they have to survive. There are many subplots (one of which I found extremely lame and is the biggest subplot of them all), but it wasn't campy and wasn't afraid to kill characters or show gore despite plenty of kids on the cast.

The Transformers the original series was a toy commercials but it's still a lots of silly fun, and it's the Transformers that got me into so many other things.
Farscape I loved it's weird mix of adventure, humor, romance, and aliens. It still holds up and it could be said that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was a remake of it.

I think it's probably easier for me to just say that I like everything that everyone has already listed, I've seen literally everything mentioned. I've been a massive scifi fan since I was a kid when I saw the first Star Wars movie at the cinema when I was knee high (because I'm that old) and I've been in love with it ever since (screw the prequels though), I'm lucky because I was pretty much brought up on it since both my parents are also huge scifi fans. Although already mentioned I want to give special mentions to Bladerunner and the Riddick trilogy and leave you with some of my current (current as in still in production) fave TV shows.
Dark Matter Killjoys The Expanse 12 Monkeys (come at me!)
Really, I even love shit scifi that everyone else hates, that's how much I love it, I'm the same way with fantasy and I don't care!

Great movie, and the performance of Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis were extremely good in there! As for the Riddick trilogy, I really liked Chronicles of Riddick and wish they showed more of the expanded universe in the third instead of going back to the first movie formula.

Dark Matter Killjoys The Expanse12 Monkeys (come at me!) Really, I even love shit scifi that everyone else hates, that's how much I love it, I'm the same way with fantasy and I don't care! Ohh yes yes yes! I only got into the Expanse a few months ago and now I'm two books into the Expanse series (which are pretty good, BTW: I'd recommend them) and I can't wait to see what the showrunners have in store for season 2. And Killjoys! It's just so much fun - and yesterday's episode was great! I don't know who mixed what into the communal coffee pot at SyFy studio, but I hope they keep doing it, they've produced pretty damn good shows recently. Dark Matter though... I never really got into it, probably because I've been over-saturated with the amnesia plot trope and I couldn't get past the first episode. I might have to give it another go, though. And I so know what you mean with liking shit scifi - hell, I watched Jupiter Ascending voluntarily I have to say I kinda love it in a "this is a complete train wreck and I can't stop laughing" kinda way - but sometimes absolutely bullshit scifi is the best scifi (exhibit A: The Fifth Element)

To add to my previous list.
Dune (extended, Director's Cut) Frank Herbert's Dune (tv movie) Children of Dune (tv movie)
I've followed the Dune bks and those added on by Frank Herbert's son. Dune is a difficult concept to bring to the screen and it cannot be done with just one movie. None of the three movies managed to present the Dune universe satisfactorily but they do have points in their favour.

I was a giant LOST fan til the 6th season. I still watch Once Upon A Time, even though it's getting dumber and dumber. Firefly.... Does 3rd Rock from the Sun count? haha! I still watch Once Upon a Time as well. Love fairytales so can't give that show up no matter how stupid it gets. Just finished watching 3rd Rock again as well! Fave Sci-Fi shows: Star Trek TNG Star Trek DS9 Stargate Atlantis Battlestar Galactica Futurama 3rd Rock from the Sun Warehouse 13 The Expanse Fave Fantasy/Horror: True Blood Once Upon a Time The Walking Dead ETA: Will have to check out this Dark Matter show. Haven't heard of it before but need something new to watch before fall show start up again.

The David Lynch one deviates from the books quite a bit, but it has a very unique style that I liked. I was pleasantly surprised with the two mini-series, enjoyed them quite a bit more than anticipated. It´s probably asking too much for someone to do a really faithful movie or mini-series installment of Frank Herbert´s Dune books, but I´m still hopeful it might get done one of these days . Was not thrilled at all with the stuff his son put out, though. "House Atreides" I disliked and did not finish (which is rare), but I read the two sequels Hunters/Sandworms to see how the story concluded. Meh. If you can recommend any of the others, though, I might give it a shot again .

David Lynch's Dune had such a great cast and the visuals were simply mesmerizing. It had some slow moments, but overall it's an experience that is worth sitting through.

This reminds me, I never finished Chapterhouse Dune.

My favourite SF shows in very rough order from best to worst: ST:TNG B5 Farscape SG-1 ST:DS9 The Outer Limits (1995) SGA BSG Never saw Firefly (can't bring myself to watch a series that gets axed like that) or Dr. Who (there's just so much of it, I wouldn't know where to begin). Aside from that, nothing really unexpected there, I guess. Unless I'm forgetting something obvious. I've been quite disappointed by all the more recent SF shows I've tried to watch. IMO there are two mistakes that get repeated again and again. Firstly, writing tends to be horrible, and there often doesn't seem to be any real long-term plan. Secondly, in order to make characters edgy and modern and flawed and multi-dimensional and all that, we often just end up with a cast without a single likeable character. My list and the same order, except the two last ones, which I don't know what they are. The borg are my childhood nightmare, damn they were scary. My whole family used to watch the series together. It was back in day, when we had no cable and only TWO tv channels and a friend would record the new episodes (she had cable channels) for us. Also the original three Star Wars movies had an impact. I haven't seen the new ones.

I think part of me would really enjoy living in that world, but not as myself as I am because I wouldn't last 5 minutes, I'd need proper ass kicking training. I suppose it appeals to that part of me that quite fancies being a smuggler in the Star Wars universe.. ass kicking and sass. I thought the same thing about Syfy too, I hope it doesn't drop off!

Mobile Suit Gundam is and was just a medium to shove model kits at people and yet it remains one of my all time favorite franchises. No, really? My interests that have connections to The Transformers is actually mind-blowing. Video Games, anime, movies, sci-fi, and so on.

Should've been a bit less concise, I guess. SGA = Stargate Atlantis, BSG = Battlestar Galactica (the new one). To be honest, they made the list only very barely. Also, V should be on that list for sure, that I forgot. Yes, I totally loved the Borg from the moment they were first encountered in TNG. The way they just ignored humans (at first) because of their absolute superiority, together with their lack of concern for individual drones - or maybe their lack of individuality itself - made them feel truly menacing to me. And I hated how they became a regular enemy in VOY, which really brought them down and ruined them as a truly scary, threatening enemy.

I watched some of the Voyager, but not all. Then spoiled the ending by reading the plot from wiki. Also The Outer Limits had some really scary stuff.
