I couldn't find an existing thread for Automata, so I thought I'd start one. UPDATED: I posted my impressions (after completing Endings A through E on Normal) here. Excerpt: OverviewIf you like J-Action games like Devil May Cry and JRPGs, you’ll like this game. The action sequences are no-holds-barred, and appropriately over-the-top for boss battles. Player skills matter and the game does its best to train you (also, Easy mode is configurable, see PROS). It’s a little Souls-like, in that if you die, you can recover some gear by finding your previous body where you died. It’s clear the game wants you to have fun and do well, not punish you unfairly. The story and plot are reasonable and mostly understandable (not always a given in J-Action or JRPGs). The characters seem static through Ending B, but beyond that they evolve and have a developmental arc — don’t give up on them too soon! There are some twists and surprises and LOL moments. Through Ending B I thought the story was a bit unsatisfying, but that turned around completely in just the first 30 minutes of my Ending C run. Many secrets are revealed and relationships deepened, amping the story up ten-fold. Despite some confusing existential story beats and what seemed like an endless villain-behind-the-villain-behind-the-villain conga line, the complete A-E story was amazing and incredibly sad, despite the goofiness of some of the supporting cast. Graphics are a mixed bag: character and gear design is highly detailed, by the overall color scheme is a bit washed-out and under-saturated for Western tastes. My total play time: about 80 hours. Roughly 30 hours for each of Endings A and B, another 20 for C, and D & E take less than an hour once chapter select is unlocked. Ratings
Combat: 10/10 Story: 8/10 Graphics: 8/10 Fun factor: 9/10 Replay value: 10/10 OVERALL: 9/10

Did you finish the game with all the endings?
Anyway, the story is among one of the strongest stories I've experienced in a video game, almost on par with the first NieR. I highly recommend you finish it, completely if you haven't and do all the side quest as they help flesh out the world and many of the machine life forms, not to mention the main characters too. Also, it's criminal to mention NieR without giving note of its excelletn soundtrack from Keiichi Okabe, who much like with the first NieR, has crafted a masterpiece of tunes.
The only gripe I have is that A2 could have used more fleshing out, more details on her background. She did get a text adventure that elaborates a bit on it but not quite enough, if Taro is doing DLC after all then hopefully it'll revolve around her. There were also some backstory for 2B and 9S that got relegated to a prequel novella, probably due to budget constraints that it wasn't added into the game.

Going to have to disagree with story rating. While some characters could have been handled better (Adam, Eve and A2)the themes, handling of them, stories and the journey of 9S was very enjoyable. Not even getting into the robot side of things which is where Automata truly shines in. Stubbies are the cutest little fuck ups in recent gaming.

Did you finish the game with all the endings? No, working my way through Ending B route right now. I know I don't have the whole story until I finish C, so will update then.

Going to strongly agree on story, it's goddamn fantastic and gets even better by each event that passes. First half is quite good but 2nd half add soooooo much. Like can easily count to a handful if not more events in the 2nd half of the game that just.. wow

Not much to add except I already love this game. The music is just as excellent as in the first Nier, it's fun to play and the story so far is very good. I only finished ending A so far though and I'm curious what else will happen. Halfway through path B and it keeps the gameplay interesting and fresh. I hope I can at least finish ending B until MEA drops, but it might be unlikely.

I played this game just about nonstop all weekend.
I screwed up and died while I had a fantastic plug-in chip setup, then died again before I could recover everything. So i started over again from scratch since I couldn't bear to continue after suffering such a significant loss.

I made a classic rpg mistake and only had one save file. I also foolishly saved after dying the second time, preventing me from ever recovering those awesome fused chips i had put so much effort into. So the only save available was the one in which i could only recover my second, way less awesome body. I've nearly caught up to my previous game but I've been farming for chips in the desert. Also, how awesome is autoheal? Amirite?

I was only asking because the game auto saves too, and it doesn't do it too often, so you could have just reloaded that one to recover your old chips as that's what I did. Yeah, auto heal is great along with all the offensive heal chips, pretty nifty to have.

Also, how awesome is autoheal? Amirite? Auto-use item +1 has saved my ass more often than auto-heal, but yeah, they are both awesome. Good opportunity to ask y'all, favorite chip of any kind? For me, it's a tie between Overclock Evasive System and Charge Attack (playing 2B).

So the best option seems to be to avoid battles or to hack everything (playing on PC with KB&M). I guess, I'm bad at playing as a support character/ sci-fi robot mage. I was genuinely glad to see Emil. He hasn't changed much since NieR Gestalt.

So I also am avoiding, but when forced to fight, spam Pod C. Nothing like homing missiles that can knockback-lock to take care of things. I finally got enough materials to upgrade Pod C and now it is 3x as awesome. I also have the Lead Pipe of Death upgraded, which is pretty awesome as a melee weapon for himself.

The mini-games are makes Taro's games so damn unique and enjoyable though. The 2D aspect and the hacking adds lot to the story too, in particular. I remember the first NieR having everything from Survival horror based sections to isometric RPG, to text adventure etc. It was great

Completed E ending. In short, after NieR Gestalt and Spec Ops: The Line Automata looks bleak. It's linear, the PC controls are poor, and there are too many mandatory bullet hell sequences. Soul Box and the credits being the worst.

I didn't play Nier before doing Automata, but I just watched this What You Missed From Nier (Gestalt) summary vid and now I'm appreciating some of the callbacks better, like Emil and Devola/Popola.
