And if you finish any other area, You are NOT able to return to Lothering. So. I suggest a quick walk back. Did you go in the Tavern? Trying not to spoil you, but you'll miss out if you don't do these two p things. I did visit the tavern where I met a strange woman who offered to join me so I said yes. I was going to slay that family of bears, well at least try to anyway, and it's to the north of Lothering apparently so I'm off there next. So the game's not open world then? Or maybe you get tied into a quest and cant do anything else until you've finished it? There are parts of Denerim, the Circle, and Orzamaar you can't enter until story requirements have been met. I don't think some towns even show up on the map until specific conversations are had. In the case of Lothering, story dictates that it becomes unavailable after one of the 3 main story missions have been completed. But technically. You could do half of the Brecilian and Orzamaar, visit Denerim, and still have access to Lothering.

I ended up at the Circle Tower and now I'm in some weird dream world where I can turn in to a mouse and spirit form. Very cool stuff. Really getting into the game now.

I'm pretty sure Lothering will be closed off when. You have completed being trapped in the Tower/ Fade. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

I've just started DA for the 1st time. I chose to be a human warrior, noble born. I couldn't select any other option other than noble born for a human character. It's the ultimate expanded version I have on Steam. Had it for a while now. Got it ages ago on sale for like £1.99 or something but haven't really played it until now. I think it's pretty good so far. Played about 6 hours of it. I'm level 5 I think. The gameplay is very similar to KOTOR I think, which is not a bad thing. I kept getting my ass kicked until I figured out how to pause in battle and select other characters and switch to secondary weapons etc. I like how you actually have to think about battles and use your party wisely. I'm just past Lothering in a camp. I tried to convince some revered woman to let a prisoner into my custody but she refused. I did the first quest on the Chantry board, wiping out bandits, and I've accepted another one to take out a family of bears but other than that I didn't spend too much time in Lothering but I can always go back. I have quite a lot of active quests as when I arrived at the camp a few of the DLC quests activated so there's plenty to do. Regarding the story it's been pretty good so far. Some twists and shocks early on, during The Tower of Ishal. Duncan dying was unexpected. Great stuff so far. Going to play some soon actually. First time with DAO? Woot! *throws confetti* I've probably said it before but I can't wait till they have technology that allows selective memory-wiping because I'd totally use it to go back and play DAO for the first time again

The Cousland origin was my first, and it is definitely my favorite. I like seeing the happy family then losing it all. I am a sucker for good angst, and nobody does it better than BioWare. I've probably said it before but I can't wait till they have technology that allows selective memory-wiping because I'd totally use it to go back and play DAO for the first time again Seconded! There are some things I really wish I could experience for the first time again, and DAO is definitely one of them.

I picked the human noble origin at first, the boring generic choice for any RPG. Didn't really have very strong feelings about it - I didn't hate it nor love it - and it certainly didn't end up becoming my favorite. It was a time when I was still experimenting with the choices in the game... so I restarted a new game several hours in. And another new game. And another. I wasn't satisfied with some of the choices I made, you see, so I ended up restarting a lot. Eventually, I got so sick and tired of the Human Noble origin that I ended up trying another origin. The female Dwarf Noble origin has remained my favorite origin ever since then. Never looked back. It was just so much more intriguing, with that backroom politics and the personal ties to the Orzammar mission. That moment when you finally become Paragon and redeem yourself (if you played an evil Aeducan from the start), it was just such a satisfying conclusion to the Dwarf Noble origin IMO. That's the kind of magic Bioware is capable of in terms of storytelling.

I played all origins, and I like all.My first origin several years ago was Circle mage (male elf). Maybe this is my favorite origin. My two latest: Cousland (male warrior) and dalish (male archer). This two is my favorite characters. Yeah that's the same with me as well. As for my favourite yes the first one I played which was Mage is still my favouite one. Currently enjoying playing a female Cousland rogue though who plans to marry Alistair and become his queen after she's put Howe in his place of course which she's about to do.

My first origin was Cousland Male warrior; I played the base game, start to finish. He made the ultimate sacrifice so I had to start a new character to play awakenings and the other DLC. Even though he got to do the least, I still kind of like him the most.

In my first playthrough i played a male Elf circle mage. I enjoyed the connection of the story, but after playing the other ones i can't say that it is my favourite. At the time, my sister played a Dalish rogue and i became immediately jealous that the Dalish story connected even better with the PC catching the taint and Tamlen reappearing ect.
But i pretty much liked all of them, strangely except for the Human Noble who like RyderFlynn said, was extremely generic and being the offspring of the second most powerful family in Ferelden seemed like the typical 'chosen one' route.... In addition to that i became to despise it because of it seemed like you practically get many extra things, like the dog from the beginning, the option of becoming king/queen of ferelden, plus the tragic past allowing you to say: "my whole family was slaughtered by orcs Howe's men and now i swear revenge"

Yeah, same. I picked Human Noble first since it would be the standard...I just didn't realize how boringly standard it would be. It's honestly my least favorite origin of all of them now, mostly because it's so sickeningly sweet. Everybody's a big bundle of love and affection and cute kids mispronouncing things, adored by the commoners and the teacher rattles on about how awesome and wonderful the family is, and the only person who doesn't like them is the hilariously evil Mean Ol Mr Howe.
I mean, compare to Dwarf Noble's world of murder and politics and backstabbing and there's no contest.

My first Warden was a Female Human Noble only because I was told I could become Queen (so sue me...)
I've done them all, and despite my general preference for playing female protagonists in rpgs, my favorite was my Male Dalish Elf. It was a true role play and not self insert. It was harder to adjust to at first, but it was a really rewarding playthrough. I also liked his character arc when romancing Morrigan since it started and ended with the Eluvian.

My favorite is still the Dalish origin, but the casteless dwarf is growing on me. My current character is a castless dwarf and this has become my second favorite playthrough and origin. Can't wait to return with her to Orzammar.

First origin story I ever played was human noble, though I still haven't finished my full game playthrough with it (even if I have it all "planned out" in my head). First one I ever completed the game with was City Elf, which was awesome in a lot of ways, still holds a special place in my heart, and is my favorite origin story just a standalone. However, my preferred Warden is a Dalish, ultimately, just because I like the way it fit the story the best.

I think I played the mage origin first, but while it's one of my favorites, it's not THE favorite. That belongs to the Brosca origin. I absolutely love underdog stuff, and the whole arc of duster-to-Paragon.

Dwarf Commoner was my first and I still think that one resonates the most with me. I thought it was amazing coming from this weird underground city, being different from all the surface-dwellers and how it was basically me, Rica and Leske (oh Leske...) against the world. Gave me great investment in the Orzammar quests later as well.

Human Noble was my first. It was good, but not my most favorite. I liked how my warden had a personal stake in seeing Loghain and Howe go down. Their humiliation and demise was key to my Warden finding closure.
The dwarf commoner/Brosca origin is my most favorite. I could not believe it when I read a few comments here from people saying they still have not tried it. That scene where Brosca defeats everyone in the arena only to be outed, the helmet dropping to the ground and everyone gasping. And then Duncan's facial expressions and reactions. Its worth it for that scene alone.
The origin stories were all amazing, but the one I least liked was the Mage. While the game gave us completely different experiences for city elf vs dalish elf, the elven mage story lacked any kind of distinction from the human one. With the exception of acknowledging that the warden is an elf in a few lines of dialogue, it was very vanilla. I would have prefered the Elf mage be dalish and would be ok if it was the same origin as Mahariel. I was not a big fan of Jowan. I wish that blood mage you can let go on the second floor showed up in your camp and was a party member. I heard that was planned but left incomplete. In the few lines of dialogues you had with her she seemed far more interesting than Jowan.
Anyways, origins in order of preference
1. Dwarf Commoner 2. City Elf 3. Dwarf Noble 4. Human Noble 5. Dalish Elf 6. Mage

Felt no regrets dying- felt so defiant.
