Being part of The Game Awards this year was so exciting for all of us here at the studio, and we hope it was for you too.
Earlier today we teased a little more about Dragon Age, giving you a glimpse of the story and some of its characters. And, surprise! Another team within BioWare has already begun pre-production on the next chapter in the Mass Effect universe.
Rich, branching narratives, choices with consequences, and intriguing characters are central to the entire Dragon Age franchise, and we’re putting a lot of work into these. You’ll form relationships with companions who will fight by your side when you experience this true Dragon Age saga set in Thedas, a world in need of a new kind of hero.
We’ve got a lot more in store for the Mass Effect universe and while we’ve got a long runway ahead of us before we’ll be ready to show you more, we hope the teaser set the tone for where we’re headed next. The teaser is full of hints about what we are planning, and we hope you have fun finding them all!
In the meantime, the Mass Effect Legendary Edition is coming in Spring 2021, so we’ll see you all back in The Citadel very soon.
As we approach the holiday season, we want to send a heartfelt thank you to all of you for your passion for our games. We are excited about the future of BioWare, and to be making the games you want us to make. We look forward to sharing more about Dragon Age and Mass Effect, as well as the other titles the teams are working on here at BioWare in the new year.
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes Note to self, make sure that before @biomarkdarrah leaves, he tells @christiandailey about the agreement for the Dragon Age musical DLC.
Casey Hudson @caseydhudson Thanks to everyone @bioware for making my last day at the studio truly magical. I’ve been so fortunate to have been part of BioWare and I’ll be a supporter and fan for life. Go get ‘em team!
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes Note to self, make sure that before @biomarkdarrah leaves, he tells @christiandailey about the agreement for the Dragon Age musical DLC.
David Gaider @davidgaider Patrick, I'm standing right here
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes A MUSICAL DLC!!! WHERE WE ARE ALLOWED TO ROMANCE DWARVES!!!
John Epler @eplerjc I've been watching various cuts and versions of that trailer daily for like, a while now, and I still get chills.
Sometimes my job is very fucking cool. #DragonAge
Y'all, there's no Epler Cut, I wrote some of the words, but the visuals and the actual trailer were all made by people far more talented at cinematics than myself.
A trailer like this is a LONG PROCESS, and I just happened to be lucky enough to get to watch it take shape. I'm just excited we were able to show it to everyone.
That said, hearing Brian Bloom say WORDS I WROTE was an absolute career milestone. I'll be riding this high for MONTHS.

Gabe Heiland @norseartemis My data says this is a slam dunk. Do it.
Jeff Ryan @erimathas After the bard and the Dawn Will Come scene in DA:I we've got all the tech we need for this too. Just saying
David Gaider @davidgaider Saw the trailer for the next Dragon Age, finally. How very strange to catch glimpses of places you dreamed of but have never seen before. Looking forward to whatever the team has cooked up for us! And also punching Solas into an alternate dimension or two.

Mike Jungbluth @lightbombmike Today we had some top EA animation minds provide feedback to a game in active development. It’s something I’ve wanted from everywhere I’ve worked but there was never enough cross studio communication to pull it off. Already immediate benefits & I’m giddy for the longer term ones.
jolie @heeehaw just found out about the scrapped dragon age 2 dlc called the exalted march which ended in varric dying a heroic death
Emily (aka Domino) Taylor pentapod It’s on page 224 and I just reread it and wow, that would have been an *amazing* #DragonAge expansion I’d have loved to play. But at least the bright side of its cancellation was more Varric!
Also: accurate evaluation of BioWare writers
Imperator Furiåsa @devilkitten This is very on point for all the BioWare writers. So much. Very pointed.
Jon Renish @jonrenish I've decided to make "Play some Dragon Age" a New Year Resolution. I'll be streaming my first time playing DA:O on New Years Day (1pm Mountain).
I'll also be raising money for the Trevor Project during the stream. Donate to help me make in game choices:
Justin Massé justinmasse I think the most common question I get asked is what exactly is a Technical Experience Designer? When we say Experience we’re referring to UX or User Experience, so let’s break it down.
When we talk about experience design, the majority of the time we are talking about UI. Examples are things like the HUD, or the settings screen. However this discipline also extends beyond UI into things like user flows, first time boot ups, and such.
To make a UI in a game the following people typically are involved: Experience Designers, Technical Experience Designers, Programmers, and UI Artists.
An Experience Designer is likely the one you’re most familiar with. They create wireframes and design documentation for features. They also may work closely with groups like user experience research, data specialists, and various feature owners.
Okay but what exactly is a Technical Experience Designer then? Well they take those wireframes and design documentation and create it in game. They work with the Experience Designer and try to implement the most performant and best feeling version possible.
So then they’re programmers? Well sort of, they have a strong technical background but they don’t often work in C++. They either work in visual scripting languages like Unreals Blueprints or in a more traditional scripting language.
They do work closely with the programmers working on engine features they will need. As you may have also guessed they work closely with the UI Artists to implement their vision into the game. I like to think of them as a bridge between three very different disciplines.
Many Technical Experience Designers also are passionate about one of the other three disciplines they work with. This strengthens their skillset and helps them bridge the gaps between the disciplines.
Blasphemy Redox @blasphemyredox Just a quick question since the trespasser dlc we really got involved with Solaris how will the next dragon age take this since the inquisitor has a lot of personal involvement with him ?
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes Hopefully very well!
Sorry I can’t say more than that for now, but our marketing folks will start talking about it when it’s time.
solas' chew toy @tpetrisevac5472 Going on a whim here and this is a ridiculous question but I'm feeling happy today and I need to know : @patrickweekes would Fen'Harel have a chew toy and if he would, what would it be?
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes We did a whole trailer about this!
Game Informer @gameinformer Fenris and the Inquisition are BACK for a new Dragon Age comic series following Blue Wraith called 'Dark Fortress' from @darkhorsecomics and @bioware.
For Fenris' latest adventure, he is joined by Inquisition agents to prepare for an assault on an unbreakable fortress in yet another effort to save Thedas from unimaginable horrors. Can Fenris and this hardened group of warriors make it in time to stop Thedas from the verge of collapse once more? We'll see, but Game Informer does have an exclusive first look at the upcoming comic with the gorgeous cover art by Sachin Teng below:
The new comic arrives in March 2021 with returning names like Nunzio DeFilippis, Fernando Heinz Furukawa, Michael Atiyeh, and Christina Weir all joining their efforts to bring more stories from the incredible RPG world from BioWare.
Issue one will arrive on March 31 of next year but it's never too early to secure your copy!
