Welcome to the Megami Tensei Discussion! This thread is more or less dedicated to discussion of all the Megami Tensei games (including Persona and its spin-offs). This is also a revival of an old thread from the old BSN (back then simply being a Persona thread) I thought I'd bring it back to this place too. I hope to see new, and possibly familiar, faces to join in.. hopefully! Feel free to join in on latest news, talks and discussions related to anything SMT or Persona by Atlus. Persona Q, Persona 4 Dancing All Night and Persona 4 Arena's sequels are out! Thanks for joining in! Atlus Livestream 2013 Announcements
The Persona 4 Arena sequel and the spin-offs were all announced back in September on a livestream. Both Q & Ultimax are out. The Giant Bomb guys got me into Persona 4 with their wildly popular endurance run way back when. The humor in that game is just fantastic! It's the only Megami Tensei game I've beaten, though I've tried quite a few! I'm looking forward to Persona 5 and I hope it holds my attention the way P4 did! Chie FTW!

I suggest giving Persona 3 a go too. I think it's more or less my favorite game in the series, as the story spoke to me more than Persona 4 did and loved playing the female protagonist in the Portable version. She's a lot more engaging lead and had some great social links. Overall that game also had one of the best social links, it was also quite hard (at least in the vanilla version of the game). Other than that, I suggest giving the Digital Devil Saga games a playthrough. Excellent post-apocalyptic JRPGs that sits just right with a western audience in regards to its story and how the characters develop.

Not so subtle reference to the author of the Arsene Lupin novels here. There's definitely a lot derived from their previous title, Catherine.

Looks like there are some issues with pre-orders for the Take Your Heart Edition on Amazon so be sure to check your orders for those who've done business there for Persona 5.

The Western Collector's Edition of P5 isn't as pretty as the Japanese one but it's definitely bigger.

I didn't see this thread when I made mine (albeit I didn't look back far enough). It's nice to see other fans of Megaten on here. I got into the series through Persona 4 a few years back, and have played quite a few of the games since. (All of the main Persona titles, Nocturne and IV, Devil Survivor 2, and I have most recently started playing the first Digital Devil Saga game, which I think is a nice mix-up from the other titles, that being its about not contracting demons, but instead being the demons yourself. It's like the demi-fiend on crack, and I'm loving it.)

Devil Saga is probably the most western friendly SMT game, as in it keeps the core values of the mainline games, the tone, Kaneko’s artstyle, atmosphere, but it also tells a very character driven story as opposed to the show but don’t tell approach of Nocturne.

Persona 5 fell apart for me by the third dungeon crawl.
I was so annoyed by the characters and the holes in the story it kind of ruined the gameplay after a while. It is a far cry from Persona 3 and 4.

I thought the characters and story was vastly better than the anime clichés of Persona 4. But it is just as well as there is a marginal difference on opinion of which of the older games is the best among fans.

But it is just as well as there is a marginal difference on opinion of which of the older games is the best among fans. What bothered me was the inconsistencies of the characters vs the themes. So like, the first dungeon against the pedophile teacher, good stuff, strong opening, went against the objectification of characters like Ann and Shiho, but then you have Ryuji and other characters doing the same exact thing back to her, in jest or no it was fairly tone deaf to the set up. Persona 4 was much more consistent with those themeing, it also helps it was a murder mystery vs rebellion of authority as a primary theme though. Even the flat characters like Teddie and Chie were at least consistent to the theming

I thought the characters and story was vastly better than the anime clichés of Persona 4. But it is just as well as there is a marginal difference on opinion of which of the older games is the best among fans. Definitely disagree about the character part, maybe it's just my own bias towards the Investigation Team, but I definitely think they're stronger characters than the Thieves. (With some exceptions.. *cough* Yukio *cough*) Though in all fairness P4 has a bit of an advantage given the main plot surrounds the main characters and not the villains (like P5). I think the main reason I prefer the characters of P4 though more so has to do with the way that P5 handled character arcs. Once the palace where you are introduced to said companion ends, that companion just kinda... stops having any kind of character arc (with perhaps the exception of Morgana), and they're just forced to sit in the background and spew whatever lines fit in best with their archetype. P4's social links at least tried to embellish on the characters, whereas P5's were just a bunch of the same old. (Not to mention the obligatory 'we need to go into Momentos to change the heart of whomever is bothering this social link's owner'!) Perhaps if we're talking about potential and the basics of the characters, the Thieves are more nuanced, but for me the execution of the character arcs are more important than the initial character concept. Also I never understood the, 'old games are better' mindset. I enjoyed P1 and P2, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend that they aged well. (P1 in particular.)

Also I never understood the, 'old games are better' mindset. I enjoyed P1 and P2, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend that they aged well. (P1 in particular.) I think it’s worse with Persona 4, in regards to character arvs, as their development happens solely in the social links. Where some, like Rise or Yosuke, remain either relatively the same throughout the whole game, or their social link being a redundant repeat of the issues they had already overcome (Rise). Yosuke remains an asshole throughout the entire game, whereas as I see Ryuji as a guy who becomes more dependable at the end. It’s true that Anne’s development might not be as marginable as say... Yukari or even Mitsuru in 3. But I like her because she’s written so well. Her relationship to the guys is fairplay laidback, like an actual person, good enough for her to sleep in the same room as them. That particular character moment is what sold me on her and Ryuji as a character. I like the conflict they face to test their friendship, where Morgana starts feeling left out, on top of the Thieves getting a bit full of themselves. Friends fight and make up. In Persona 4 that never happens, you become besties with Yosuke the moment you shake his hand, and everyone treats you like Jesus. Whereas in 5 you are treated as one of the group. I could write more on this subject when I get home but I’m at work at the moment so yeah.

Persona 4 was much more consistent with those themeing, it also helps it was a murder mystery vs rebellion of authority as a primary theme though. Even the flat characters like Teddie and Chie were at least consistent to the theming Yosuke was an asshole towards Kanji throughout the entire game of Persona 4, and you can never reprimande him for it. Anne and Ryuji knowa each other better to make fun of each other. I bought his teasing more than I bought Yosuke’s. I don’t dispute there aren’t any issues with the game I just didn’t find them as aggravating as Persona 4(which I find to be the weakest among Hashino’s directed titles). On the subject of the themes. I think the themes were pretty clear, a lot of it is grounded in breaking free from the expectations set by society at large. Persona 4 was introspective on the “Self” where Persona 3 was on “Death and Mortality/Life”. Persona 5 centers its focus on society at large, but I still think there is a lot of introspective Jungian angle to it too like prior games. It each villain represents one of the 7 Deadly Sins, the ones that summarizes us as people. Among those villains are the Public itself, in form of Mementos, their refusal to hold public figures accountable for their abuse of power. In a lot of ways they are the main villain, as a body that gives rise to the other villains and the “true” antagonist of the game. Similar to Nyx and Izanami An underlying theme with all of the people the Phantom Thieves stole the hearts of was that their actions were in some way influenced by society at large. Each of these representatives are used in the context of the story to mirror behavior in reality. There is nothing inherently wrong with not getting involved in politics or refraining from reading more closely into news stories. However, after enough of these sentiments have built up from so many people over time, it is no longer the shortcoming of each individual person; it is now a foundation for all other societal issues. The way on how the average faceless NPC in the game walks with their head down, like they are in chains, ns goes about their business with no complaints. And how that is reflected in their own Palace “Mementos, with them willingly riding a train into the core of the Earth, with their destination being a prison makes it pretty clear. Hordes of people are locked in cells by their own volition, enjoying the comfort of a cell — it’s secure and consistent; there is no variation or change to be afraid of. The Thieves even find their past adversaries in these cells, admitting that their ambitions, albeit distorted and misguided ones, were too much effort, and that simply submitting is an easier way to live. Persona 4 does do some interesting things in regards to gender politics through characters like Naoto and Kanji, undermined by a Scooby Doo murder mystery plot and lame School events.

Regardless of story (which i really like) I still think P5 has the best flow and I really hope they expand on the puzzle elements that broke up the progression inside palaces. The museum, the pyramid and the casino sections felt optimally paced to me. A nice split between story, puzzles and fighting. I also feel 5 seems much less daunting for replaying sessions because of that and it's great presentation which also helps the strong flow with an almost seamless connection between menu traversal and gameplay.
I'm very excited about the rumors surrounding Persona 5 with the recent domain acquisition from Atlus.

Once the palace where you are introduced to said companion ends, that companion just kinda... stops having any kind of character arc (with perhaps the exception of Morgana), and they're just forced to sit in the background and spew whatever lines fit in best with their archetype. I'd say that Makoto and Futaba's character arcs also continue after the palace they're introduced, as Makoto continues to become more assertive and embrace her newfound rebellious streak, while Futaba continues to become more confident and take steps to overcome her social anxiety.
But you're right, the rest unfortunately do kinda backslide after dealing with their respective palace ruler. Ryuji suffers from this the most I think, not helped by how the game repeatedly paints him as an insensitive hothead, even though his confidant link has him working at overcoming those character flaws.

How does P4 Golden compare to the original release? Wondering whether it'd be easier (and much cheaper) to dust off my PS2, rather than having to pony up the dosh for a Vita so I can play P4G?
