Upscaled with neural networks footage from the dawn of film taken by Mitchell and Kenyon in North England, 1901. In the video various films taken in 1900-1901 displaying some of the grittier nature of work in those days. (video by Denis Shiryaev)
Upscaled with an ensemble of neural networks Louis Le Prince's footage, Roundhay Garden Scene, shot in October 1888. (Denis Shiryaev)

What women had to wear and put up with in the 1800's. Nothing looks comfortable. Probably more true for the Victorian middle classes and upper classes, given the fashion for tiny waistlines (achieved by the Victorian corset). The working class women, who are probably textile mill workers given that the video is of Northern England (circa 1900) seen in the first video would need (and could only afford) simple practical clothes. Interesting to note that kids had to grow up quickly some of those adolescent boys are factory workers it's the absolute inverse of an infantilized society. Their facial expressions and general demeanor look older than they should be, certainly a case of being old before their time, those times were hard though.
Sadly a lot of those boys wouldn't even make it to 1920 as that generation of young men were slaughtered in the coming first world war which was only fourteen years away from these films. The same towns and communities shown here would have street upon street were most of the young men were dead, there were only old men, women and young chilldren.

I found this interesting. Mainly because I don't know much about Napoleonic era land warfare.
There's a lot of old lessons re-emphasized here. Like retreat in good time. Strategic and tactical retreats are powerful maneuvers. Fleeing and being routed is not. Like don't make your logistics vulnerable with your advance. Like don't load yourself down with loot when you have to make a quick exit.
But in my mind, there is something else that stands out: The only time you should ever wait for the enemy, is when you have a valid trap. Whenever you allow the enemy to choose when or where to fight, you're bound to lose. This is why relying on fixed defensive installations, whether they are the Maginot line or missile air defenses, always fails if it comes to crunch time.

Over the years whether it be a board game or computer game, whether be a computer or human opponent I always get sucked into chasing a retreating fortifying enemy, always with the thought that if I can just finish them off then I can move onward to other things. Quite often this leads to my doom by getting over extended ans using too many resources instead of being more patient and just using my advantage to slowly beat them down over time.

This is why relying on fixed defensive installations, whether they are the Maginot line or missile air defenses, always fails if it comes to crunch time. yeah that channel is prolly the best historical channel ever. The maps there are of immense value and show you why every description of the gunpowder era battles contains something like "regiment X came to battle 2 hours later, division Y arrived when the battle was over" along the lines. It's because armies don't walk in one single unit, they need roads and roads have limited capacity which is why EVERY army of the XVII-XIX centuries was always arriving to the battlefield one unit after another with some units failing to catch up. This is why relying on fixed defensive installations, whether they are the Maginot line or missile air defenses, always fails if it comes to crunch time. the Maginot line did a decent job. The main purpose of the Maginot line was not to ward off the Germans, it was to channel the German invasion to a place where the French and the Brits could face it. The line did the job, it's just no one expected the Germans to go through the Ardennes so swiftly.

Science thread or History?
Both many durable and non-durable popular pigments throughout history have presented a considerable health hazard. But worst of all has to be the closely related Scheele's Green, Paris Green and Emerald Green. They were all Copper Arsenic compounds that released Arsenic gases into the air. The assistants to the great classical painters probably suffered from all the Lead, Antimony, Mercury and Arsenic compounds they handled, but that is nothing compared to the first modern bright green. It's in a class of its own.
As a comment, there are a few things well worth knowing regarding "artist material" today. First of all, never let children play with anything that is labeled "For Artists" or "Artist Paint", even if it was cheap and says "Non-Toxic". "For Artist Use" is not some quality stamp. It's something they have to put on, to be allowed to sell it. Don't let anybody play 'Tatoo' or 'Makeup' or paint Easter Eggs with it. And damn those idiot child pedagogues who figured "Finger Paint" was a good way to stimulate creativity
Serious brands like Crayola and Caran D'Ache make special products for children and consumer use, with safe pigments. Buy those instead, if you have children around.
There are two useful rules regarding the safety of the common artist materials that are around today. Both concerns how you use it. 1: You do not have to be scared of anything, as long as you use it AS INTENDED. It's perfectly safe and you don't have to worry, even if it contains Antimony, Nickel, Copper, Chrome, Cadmium, Cobalt or whatever. 2: If you get 'creative' and starts to use the paint in a way IT'S NOT INTENDED FOR you're in trouble, no matter how many assurances of "Non-Toxic", "Health label" -certifications whatever. Just two simple, symmetric rules. Easy to remember, yes?
For example: If a paint is made to be applied with a brush or knife, never use your fingers or put it into an airbrush or spraygun. (There are special airbrush paints, which are not perfectly safe to breathe either, but at least their pigment particles are big enough not to pass to the bottom of your lungs and freely through your body membranes.) If it's made to put on a canvas or paper, don't paint your clothes. Etc. Use as intended.
Related: Fountain Pen inks sold today in EU, are pretty "safe". Inks sold in USA or elsewhere, not necessarily so. Use in pens to write on paper. It's that simple. Use as intended.

The colors are so fresh and accurate, that I for a moment wondered if this could be a dye transfer process color photography from the time. (dye transfer was a gelatin based, early color photography process that was rather similar in principle to Technicolor. It used three separate B&W negatives photographed through red, green and blue filters. While the filters weren't perfect, if you have access to the negatives, you can assemble a color image that comes close to modern digital photography. However, it was not. It's B&W photos digitally colored by a very talented and knowledgeable Russian. Olga Shirnina. She has been suspended and banned repeatedly by the authoritarian, narrative driven activists at Facebook and Instagram, for posting old images they don't like and think are "dangerous". Strangely (or perhaps not, given who are employed by Facebook), her images of Soviet and other communist symbols, events, leaders and officials, responsible for the torture, murders and genocides of millions, millions and millions of people, are just fine. (And they are, of course, but it exposes the Facebook standards). Some "problematic" historical pictures are less "problematic" than others.

Goering was in fact a "dangerous individual" but I don't think anybody should try to delete history. There are so many Facebook pages on Nazi soldiers. 'However, I couldn't believe that they had said the same thing about the Soviet soldiers hoisting the victory banner - a celebration after four years of a horrible war. That's impertinence.'
