Again, if your goal is to disable traps and pick locks, going above 100 in each gives no benefit in BG1+BG2. You must have someone with the ability to do so, especially for stuff like Durlag's Tower, but you don't need a pure thief to be able to do so, 6-7 levels IIRC is enough. Much stronger characters are the multi-classes with thief (I love fighter-mage-thief as a solo character) or the dual class options: thief to mage utility, and fighter to thief if you actually want your thief to be able to fight stuff and use spike traps. Maybe the only exception for the pure thief is the Shadowdancer kit, that with enough micro it's pretty damn strong and has very interesting epic abilities. Some of the traps (especially in BG 2 and Durlag's Tower) have minus percentile chances to the check. Also, it's fine if you and others liked to Dual her; I never did. I liked keeping her as a pure thief. Each their own, really. I like her as pure thief too. I even return her to pure thief (or rather swashbuckler) status in BG 2 with Shadowkeeper. There are enough capable mages in both games, but only a few good thiefs, especially in BG 2. Nadia is useless as a thief without Shadowkeeper, Yoshimo doesn't last, Jan is OK and that's it. Since the story focuses heavily on Imoen, I want to have her in the group and I more often than not play a magic user of some kind, so she is more useful as a pure thief for me. I never tried Hexxat, since I don't really play evil (I want Mazzy and Imoen in my group).

Long before Steam was a thing, I toyed with the idea of using Shadowkeeper, but not being super tech savvy, I didn't. Nadia....why did they even bother making her a Dual Thief anyway? Should've just made her pure mage, really. Yoshimo was decent, but was integral to the plot.
Jan - he's not bad really! He's decent as a thief and an illusionist, but you can't bring him in a group with Minsc, otherwise there will be conflict. And in an evil party, he's outshined by Edwin. He could be your mage in an alt-good party, or even a neutral party, but you have other options as a pure mage in an alt-good party. In a neutral one, he's really your best choice. Apparently, you can turn Hexxat TN, supposedly, but I haven't gotten around to trying it yet.
And speaking of Mazzy, her stats really scream "Thief" more than "Fighter". I think her being a "noble, honorable thief of Avoreen" would have been interesting, really. Most halfling thieves follow Brandobaris, so it would have been a neat story and background for her I think.

Jan and Minsc bicker in their banters, but I've never seen them get into violent conflict.

Since Minsc is always kicked out first option I get, that is not a problem. Minsc and Anomen are probably my most disliked BG characters - well and Aerie. So those three are always out, but the rest I use as long as possible. I'm not that fond of the EE companions, especially that annoying wild mage. I ditched her at first possibility and never recruited her afterwards.

I actually have once - it gets to the level where Jan tries to take Boo (again). At that point, Minsc turns hostile on Jan and will try to kill him. Like when having both Keldorn and Viconia in the party together.
We were about to attack Mae'var when it happened - Minsc slaughtered Jan....so I tried to reload it, and it happened again. So, I was like, "Yeah....this isn't gonna happen.... "

I actually like Aerie. Anomen....is an ass until he passes his trial. Then he's actually not bad, realizing he was a huge dick. Not great....but not bad.
Neera - that's the Wild Mage and yes, she's annoying and terrible. Haven't tried Dorn (I think?) but Rasaad is insane. He's actually taken that final slot in my main party that Mazzy used to take, but quickly found herself being useless in ToB. As a side note, he's actually voiced by Mark Meer.

Davaeorn does a lengthy breakdown of the weapons in BG1/SoA/ToB. (And some weapons from mods, apparently.)

I bought the original games on GOG years ago and played a bit of Baldur's Gate 1 using a widescreen mod. I tried but when using the widescreen mod the player disappears so since I kept on losing track of him I stopped playing. Two years ago I bought the Enhanced Editions which come with native widescreen. I played a bit until I did all of the quests in Candlekeep and I was able to see my character all the time.
I am thinking about starting a serious playthrough of both games, since I always heard how good they were. Plus when when I first read a review for Dragon Age: Origins, the reviewer said DAO was a good game but not Baldur's Gate 2. I found that remark astonishing since DAO is one of my favorite rpg's of all time. I have played other D&D games like Neverwinter Nights 1, and my favorite rpg of all time Planescape: Torment, so I know I will enjoy the game if I dedicate myself to it.
I will post my progress here and in the 'What did you do today in any other game out there' thread. So first things first what class should I be? In these types of games for my first playthrough I like to be noble and virtuous, since I feel I get the most out of the game being modest. So Paladin would be my first choice. But is Paladin a good class? In NWN1 I enjoyed being a Sorcerer I brought terror to the Underdark and hell. So which is better Sorcerer or Wizard? I know in these type of games everyone prefers Wizard, but I enjoyed Sorcerer in NWN1. Also what's a good build? If there's anything I despise is making progress then scrapping the game after finding out we made a bad build. So what's a good one?

Paladin is a great class, and it's a whoooooole lot harder to screw up building one than a Sorcerer. Just roll until you've got enough points to give yourself good scores in Charisma, Strength and Constitution. The only wrinkle is that you need to play to your Good alignment or you'll lose your powers. (The game will still let you get away with stealing everything not nailed down, though. The reputation system is not sophisticated and it's geared towards detecting Good vs. Evil actions rather than Law vs. Chaos.) Also, if you play Paladin then in BG2 you will get to wield the best weapon in the game.
Both Sorcerers and Wizards are phenomenally powerful, but I wouldn't recommend either one to someone has never played the games before. Sorcerers, in particular, rely on you knowing a lot about the spell system to select the right choices - there are a lot of guides around if you're happy to use those, though, so the real problem is that arcane casters start out extremely squishy and weak.

Thanks for the information. When I played Paladin in NWN1 I stuck to being Lawful Good so I have no problem sticking an alignment. SO I'll try a Paladin then and reroll the attributes to get a good charisma score. What about strength and dexterity are they any good to a Paladin?

Strength is very important - you want it at eighteen - but Dexterity somewhat less so. You could keep rerolling until you can get it to eighteen, but you're going to be wearing full plate soon enough that you don't really need the armour bonus that badly. I've completed the whole saga with a Paladin whose Dex sore was ten and it never gave me any trouble. Getting Constitution to eighteen is much more important.
You can safely keep Wisdom at the minimum of thirteen - Paladins don't get bonus spells from it, unlike Clerics. Intelligence shouldn't be below nine for various reasons, only some of which involve Mind Flayers.

Okay, thanks! I now have a good idea on how to build a Paladin.
