It's a trope that has worked well, and pleased their fans, except when the make the romance 'unwinnable.' As for the 'men' who have a dead spouse to avenge, that trope also started in SOA with Jaheira losing Khalid. It was a bold choice, you had seen widows as love interests in lit and film, but the widow love interest was always a widow at the start of the story, a lost love of the past. Khalid's loss was very much in the present, as was Jaheira's grief. It was the window into the 'ice queen's' (as you call the type, great line) soul. Does gain something of a creepiness factor if you go from BG1-BG2, and you're told that Gorion named Jaheira and Khalid your guardians. So you're essentially romancing your stepmother I really don't think that was ever in any way intended to be interpreted literally as "they're your parents now". And you're an adult by the time you even meet them, not related by blood and weren't raised by them. Besides, there's the Imoen romance mod if you want some incest-y undertones. :amirite:

Which is why I'll probably never do her romance. Well, that and the fact her husband was just killed! Besides, there are too many good romance mods for female PC for me to even want to play again as a male.

After messing about with some party compositions in BG2, I think I finally found my 'ultimate' party: Cavalier - Gorion's Ward Blackguard Shadowdancer 13/Fighter Swashbuckler 6/Cleric, where the first 6 levels are just to get max necessary lockpick and find traps, the added proficiency options are nice though Cleric/Illusionist Invoker Haven't left chapter 2 yet though, doing most of the quests first

It's pretty much the base Paladin but better in every way at the things Paladins do. The only drawback doesn't even really count if you're playing with a full party. It's rare enough anyway that I'd ever have a Paladin use ranged weapons. Plus AFAIK you can get around this limitation anyway with the throwing weapons.

My cavalier used Azureedge as a backup weapon.

I have to admit, I've never been into BG. I own both games and their expansions only because they came along with one gaming magazine. I might give it a try during summer to figure out what's so special about it, but I have two problems to get into it (I tried to play it three or four times before). I would be glad if someone clarified these issues to see if it's worth it trying for a fifth time.
1) I got a feeling from various sites that to make the game beatable, you have to min/max so your character doesn't suck. Does it apply only if you're playing alone (without any party members), or am I supposed to (e. g.) create a strong, but dumb fighter in order to have a chance to finish this game(s) no matter what?
2) Are dialogues, stories and side-quests better after prologue? I mean... I know it's just a beginning, but I remember being in "WTF?" state after convincing a man to give up on suicide by simply telling him "There are so many things to live for!" "Oh, YEAH! You're right! I forgot! I should go home!" It was just... like playing a DnD (or any other RPG) session when you're six years old.

You're right! I forgot! I should go home!" It was just... like playing a DnD (or any other RPG) session when you're six years old. 1) You absolutely do not have to min-max in order to make the game beatable when playing with a full party. The closest thing to completely messing up a character would be to start with a Sorcerer as your first character and making poor spell choices, since that class is stuck with whatever you choose as you level until the bitter end. Non-spellcasters are probably the most beginner-friendly classes for a first time through, and you can learn the game's spells through adding some caster NPC's in your party. Even if you do something like creating a Fighter with low strength, there are items available that raise stats to a certain amount by wearing them (like gauntlets that set your strength to 18/00). If you have the patience you can keep re-rolling your stats until you get a high enough total to make a fighter that's both strong AND smart AND charismatic. You can also lower the difficulty if it feels overwhelming (early on it can seem a bit like it, since you have such low HP when you start at level 1 and can't take hits very well) 2) Dialogue and story are definitely fairly bare bones in BG1 (not taking into account possible mods). BG2 is structured more like what you'd expect from a Bioware game. Honestly, unless you add a bunch of mods I personally wouldn't have ever played BG1 except the once.

I might just stumble on blogs and faqs that had only sole character in mind, because I often read something like "this class sucks unless you choose to do this/don't play as this at all" while glorifying nine or ten possible character builds... and most of them were pretty boring or unoriginal or just very overspecialized. 2) Well, I'll try to survive the writing of BG1 then. I don't like skipping previous titles. Thanks for your answers.

davesin The guy you talked off jumping from a cliff is hilarious. He actually doesn't want to die and if you egg him on he'll do the mental gymnastics and decide to keep on living just to spite everybody. So that one was not Baldur's Gate serious take on suicide prevention. Personally I couldn't finish the game without the NPC mod since I just got to darn lonely and Tutu since I had trouble with the no pause in inventory and some other stuff.

Just bought BG EE from GOG last week so I might be playing that game again (but EE version for the first time) soon!

Nah. She's having an affair. Haven't played the mod so I don't know if that changes it though.

Depends on your input as the PC. You can push Keldorn to have his wife imprisoned for adultery, and the 'other man' executed, or you can push him towards reconciliation and save his marriage.

I think I remember doing the latter one time. The last several games I played I never had him in my party so I forgot the details of it. Thanks!
