Since the best people from the community are here now, I was wondering... Shouldn't we get something professional? I mean, a own url (migrantfleet.org is still free) with payed server space where we build our own forum? I'm sure a paypal donation button would make up for all the costs.
I like this place, but who knows what boards.net will decide to do in the future. We'd keep moving.

The other part becomes much more complicated question. There are different elements that come into play: -Which forum software are we going to use? -How are we going to handle our Databases in terms of type and administration? -Which platform are we using for server hosting and how much can we get for different price points? -How hands on do we want to be with the server administration? -In terms of growth, how do we handle scalability?

I had planned on following up with you at some point about the data you had parsed before the forums closed. I had been thinking along the lines of setting up a url to host it. I've done a bit of research into some of it, and I'll fire off my thoughts to you at some point. At the moment, I'm getting up to shenanigans. We all know you can't interrupt unfinished shenanigans!

Sure! We could create some virtual archive where people can search for information if need be.

Of course there doesn't have to happen anything from proboards' side, but if it does we'd have nothing and be scattered even further since it might come without warning. I know that ViSeiRa launched a forum that looks very similar to the now closed BSN, has similar features and it's paid for already, but he launched it very late, so traffic is quite low. Everyone moved to here already The question is if this community would be willing to move again and maybe to join forces so we'd have our own space. Maybe it would also be possible to move the complete forum with its current threads from here to somewhere paid if joining up forces wouldn't be an option. It might be something the moderators should discuss first. Dunno. But I really do think a paid space would be better in the long run.

Just dropping a note that no final decisions have been made yet but, yes, this is a topic of discussion amongst the moderators in our backroom. We're aware (and share) the same concerns and have been kicking around ideas for the long-term survival and future of this place.

Yep, as DragonRacer says, something we are discussing. A few observations: - The number 1 priority after the closure announcement was to find a solid lifeboat and fast, it took a few days for the outcome to be clear, but this is it.
- It may be possible to get a better domain name even on a ProBoards platform.
- Moving yet again in the short term is risky with only 70 Days to N7 Day.
Please keep sharing ideas, Dragon has pinned this thread in the moderator discussion.

Well perhaps have a website anyway that links to this board. So a bit like the index thread but where it talks a bit about the forums, why they were made and where to find all the archived content. Then it has a tweet box on the side (or two) either of the bioware list feed or of the forum account.
Then if needs be a forum could be put onto that as well.

I understand the anxiety about needing to move the forum to another base but i think it's just the moving jitters. The Real Dragon Age Fans forum's been around on Forums.net since the about change from BSN to BSN Prime, and it even has an Eros section, but doesn't seem to be any worse from the wear.
If there is a decision to solidify the forum elsewhere, to keep from jumping around, there can be linking such that the front of this forum links to the "new" forum, if hosted elsewhere, then backup the forum to here so there's redundacy in case there's a problem ever on the new site. Would require some scripting to keep the forums in-sync but would allow for the posts to be safe somewhere.
If sticking with pb, setting up a backup somewhere wouldn't be a bad idea so changing locations won't be problematic, as long as the new board location is phpBB based.

Imho the best solution would be to create a website and then a year from now there be a discussion on the merits of staying or leaving Pro boards.

I'm on this site every day, so I'd happily donate a little every now and then to help with running costs. Perhaps a goal could be set every month and once it's reached the donations shut down till the next month? That way there'd never be an excess for anyone to argue over.

Sorry for necroing an old thread but I found it searching for backups. After what happened to the official forums I've gotten a bit.. nervous when it comes to data retention. I'd hate to see my new BioWare related home disappear once more. Not that I can see a reason that it would though but still. I'm one of those people who makes copies of copies when it comes to backups, using both Amazon S3 as well as a linux server of my own (tucked away at my parents house for off site purposes ) for my own data. Started looking around some what backup options there were for proboards not having used them myself before. From what I see they hold on to the data themselves pretty rigidly. So.. it doesn't look like we'd be able to bring this place with us in case we ever wanted to move (in case pb starts changing on us for instance) and that's.. kind of scary to me. I don't mean to sound like an alarmist, I just get a bit antsy when I (or the admins here in this case) can't control my own data in the ways I see fit. Sure, we could still upgrade to a premium board here and get our own domain name but.. I don't know. I'd just feel better knowing there were a way to keep an exit route open. So.. er.. I don't really know what my point actually is. Just.. I don't know. I love the work you've guys have done to hold us together as a community and I'd hate to see something happen to that. I wish I could help out somehow, just to do my part you know? [edit] Hell, I'd share some of my own space I've got for hosting in a heartbeat if it'd help in any way. What kind of traffic and storage does the forums use now by the way?

A server nowdays is in a pretty sorry state if it doesn't have redundant systems. Considering Proboards doesn't seem to be running out of someone's basement, we're probably in okay hands. Does this mean we shouldn't pursue back-up options? No. Just means there shouldn't be as much to worry about, especially considering the old forum closing wasn't because lack of redundancy, just humanity.

When the announcement came that BSN Prime was closing, it was done with some but not extensive notice of closure and people scrambling to find other solutions, some more palatable than others. What that process has taught me is that it is the community that counts, not any particular technology, and to see so many people that I associate with BSN Prime here (and finding their way here) warms my heart. It would have been all too easy to shrug our shoulders and drift fragmented to Twitter and Reddit. Ultimately, Cyonan will make the call about if and when we move to a more dedicated platform, but I'd wish to add this personal thought: After 100 days of really hard work, we've built this group up to #1-#3 Google rankings for 'Mass Effect forum(s) / BioWare forum(s), now N7 Day is past and we are in pre-launch marketing for Mass Effect Andromeda, this is no time to mess around with the basics of the site, so I think we are locked in now for Mass Effect Andromeda. But come Winter 2017/Spring 2018, this should be a matter for serious consideration.

I didn't mean to lessen any of the hard work done by all of the staff so I hope I didn't come off sounding like that. I'm very impressed with that you all have managed here and thankful for it. We all wouldn't be gathered back here together otherwise. That just makes me value having a back up solution even more, that's all. We're sitting on something rather valuable here!
