Hidy ho all,
I've never had the dog in my party for longer then absolutely nessisary. Mostly because he seemed kind of pointless. But if, in the future, I do choose to have him along, I'd like to know what his role in the party is supposed to be. Is he a damage dealer? Is he a tank?

Dog does damage. Pump his Strength and ignore all the other stats. Give him bones and ask him if he sees anything interesting anytime you enter a zone. Sometimes he brings you stuff.
Always take him with you to Caridin's Cross in the Deep Roads. He will come back with a very nice hat.

Yeah he's nowhere near as good as the otheres. If you're on PC, download the fifth dog slot mod from Nexus mods. Then he can take some aggro. Also, put him in your party of 4 when you're in Denerim or Orzammar. Your companions will have dialogue with him. Loghain has 2 and they're heartbreaking.

He can't be overwhelmed or grabbed, and can detect stealth units at close range (sort of).

Dog will never lie to you (Morrigan), leave you (Alistair), creep you out (Leliana) or try to kill you (Wynne, Sten, Zevran, Oghren, Shale, Loghain - am I missing anyone here?). Therefore, he's the best companion in DAO.

He's does some good damage and make enemies fall back while he rips them to shreds. He's quite useful. I use a mod that makes him a permanent party companion. I think it fits the warden's human noble origin since he/she is a fereldan noble hence why a mabari fighting by his/her side is tradition.

Um, he's your adorable best friend. How can you even ask? In seriousness, I second the 5th slot mod for Dog. It didn't work for me in the fade (circle mage quest), but it's been handy everywhere else. Since starting my new game a few days ago, Dog lasts longer in a fight than Alistair, and much longer than Sten (all on auto level-up at the moment). Though, in fairness, I don't like Sten at all and haven't tried very hard to make him useful.

The only downside to Extra Dog Slot is that it bugs out Fort Drakon if you pick the "my companions will rescue me/us" option: you only get 1 companion instead of 2, which can make fighting on the way in very tough. To avoid the bug, either don't get taken prisoner or disable the mod before confronting Cauthrien. You can re-enable it once you're reunited with the rescuers.

He can also stun your enemies with his howl for a brief period of time, which can be pretty useful when you're surrounded. Plus, it's gratifying when he learns the overwhelm technique himself and you send him after a pesky mage and/or archer. Ah, the sound of their screams as they get torn to shreds... *cough* Excuse me. I'm not usually that bloodthirsty, honest.

Thats awesome. Its so freaking anoying how you can't break out of an overwhelm situation. Giving that back to the NPC's sounds like just a great idea to me.

Nightmares forever *shudder* On-topic: I find Dog very useful. (Sometimes more useful than Alistair.) He hasn't got many abilities, but he's got a stun, knockdown, and there's Overwhelm as others have mentioned. He closes on enemies fast and does good damage. Plus he's low-maintenance in terms of gear and he doesn't bring any drama like some other companions. If you're being Overwhelmed, have another party member use a stun/freeze/knockdown attack on the enemy. It will interrupt the attack. Dog's Charge and Howl abilities can do that.

Dog's best qualities are immunity to being grabbed or overwhelmed. He can also serve as a decent distraction and lock down a mage with his own overwhelm. He's best used on PC because then you can use the Extra Dog Slot mod to keep him while you have other, more powerful companions.

Shield Wall and Indomitable don't actually protect you against Overwhelm since it isn't the same as a typical knockdown. But having a companion disable the enemy who is doing the overwhelming will work (whatever disable you like really). As far as all those little bastards in Awakening, 2H warrior with high crit bonus activating Massacre works pretty nicely.

He's not bad at all.

I started another Character, the warrior, and am planning on keeping the dog with him. Of course, the game took him away from me for the wilds.
Thanks for the feedback all!

I hated having to leave Dog behind all the time when I played vanilla DAO, so it was great to finally have a way to keep all my companion slots open and still let my adorable canine friend totally wreck people as the Maker/Ancestors/Creators intended. The best thing about Dog is having him alongside a Dwarf Warden. Would love to know what the various bystanders in Ferelden are thinking whenever they witness a tiny dwarf and a Mabari casually obliterating anything that happens to be in their path. But I can imagine the jokes in Ferelden post-Blight got a bit surreal; Gossip 1: So a dwarf and a mabari walked into a bar... Gossip 2: What happened next? Gossip 1: Pain.
