Ash's situation was quite different. She was trying to be in the very same military structure that her family had been in. Well... Alec was an N7 in the Alliance, and the Ryder twins are in the Alliance, so... We know that it wrecked his reputation and career, and IIRC - he was court martialed for it. I think the entire Pathfinder team - including the twins - were hand-picked and trained for their role(s). They both served in the Alliance military - Scott was guarding a mass relay, Sara at a prothean dig site. Also, they were raised by an N7 who had taught them a fair bit while they were growing up. The point of all of this was that BioWare set out to create a PC who was trained and had some experience, but was not yet as proven as Shepard was at the outset. You might want to do the Ryder Family memory questlines, as that will fill in some blanks for you. Anyway - if you can't really embrace the idea of playing as one of the Ryders, then you might not enjoy this game. I have already finished the game twice. I do enjoy it. I see that they wanted to set out to have someone who had 'some' experience but 'some' experience as I have said didn't cut it for me. 'Some' experience doesn't give you a title of pathfinder unless your dad is a nepotistic dick. They know this because they write it into cora then try to write their way out of it by showing us she would not have been a good leader because. Hand picked by daddy who has an agenda doesn't mean much. It's still nepotism 101. I don't like playing the role of a kid who got what they got because their parent had an agenda. So I head canon it. Sorry if it troubles you but it makes my game far more interesting and fun.

You became Pathfinder because Alec didn't want to stand there and watch his child suffocate to death. Even if he originally wanted his kid to become Pathfinder I would guess the plan was to train them while he performed the role of Pathfinder. Maybe down the line he saw Cora and both his kids off leading teams of their own throughout Andromeda. I doubt the plan all along was to off himself within hours of arriving in Heleus.

Yeah they bring that up but one of the discussion early on IIRC. That he planned for it to be you. Maybe not at that point in time but I think it is when you wake up. The Lexi says it is all academic. So if I understood that correctly, it ws because he passed sam to you. I'm not clear on if he had to do that to save you. You have an implant when you woke up. Lexi checks it. So they muddy the waters a bit. I am sure he did not expect you to take over so soon but it was the plan. I'm still not clear if to save you he had to make you pathfinder or if it was an accident. I got the impression that he saved you but he made you pathfinder right then to assure you would finish something he started and wanted you to learn of. Not that it would be at some point in time passed to you maybe after cora.

Not that it would be at some point in time passed to you maybe after cora. I thought all the Pathfinder team had those implants? Maybe not they weren't super clear about that unless it is buried in a codex entry somewhere. I think certain events you learn about later forced his hand. I would guess he wanted to deal with whatever plotline the Benefactor is going to be about on his own. Once he knows he is going to die he needs to pass on those memories to someone and he either didn't think Cora was up to that particular challenge or he simply didn't want to share such personal things with her. So circumstances dictated him giving those to you. If not for that maybe he didn't even want his kids becoming Pathfinders, who knows. He did what he had to do in the moment. Not to mention the whole thing with Ryder's mom. How shitty would it have been to learn about that from Cora?

If you finish the Family secret mission it's pretty clear why he passed it on to you and not Cora. Also I think they Ryder family have a special SAM implant everyone else don't but I'm not to sure. The reason is most likely because your mother is alive and he wants you to find a cure one day. Guilt played a role for sure but it most likely had to do with your mother

In my version, young Ryder had a lot dumped on her shoulders due to circumstances - which is how a lot of RPGs are setup. How you invent or headcanon stuff in your own play doesn't trouble me a bit. I only responded because you made a number of claims that are objectively false.

One of the reasons people prefer Shepard, in my opinion, is that as players, we have seen a lot of things in video games and movies. Ryder will panic when he first sees Archon, but we have seen way worse. So in a sense, we are more experienced, more similar to Shepard in that area.
