This is technically off topic, but in my goofy brain, it makes sense to post here. Have any of you played Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor? I saw some gameplay and, even down to the animations, it seems to basically be Assassin's Creed Middle Earth. And yet it is not a Ubisoft game. No haven't played or even seen any footage. Did it look good? I think so. It's an older game, but here's a recent review: I have so many games to play. I'm doomed

I'm doomed Looks OK, IUbi has a massive sale on ATM and I bought Ghost Recon Wildlands Ultimate edition for $29-95 it was $149 it had an 80% discount and i got a further $15 off using the Ubi Forward code "Forward". I have no idea when I'll get to play it but have had my eye on it for a while. About to finish ME2 then do ME3 LE and then doa 2nd MELE run through and also have the new AC Valhalla stuff to do.

You might be right about both series having similarities. Years ago one of the AC devs even accused Monolith of plagarizing the animations from AC2 (?).

I have, at an 10,000 foot view they might seem similar, but while playing them I found them to be different. The big core system for Shadow of Mordor is the Nemesis system and everything else in the game is built around that. So its an open world action game where you beat enemies up, but there are targeted named enemies that will grow strong and gain more abilities or have specific weaknesses.

Jason Schreier @jasonschreierNEW: The future of Assassin’s Creed is live service. Ubisoft Montreal and Quebec have teamed up for Assassin’s Creed Infinity, a huge platform planned to have multiple settings. But after the reorg, several men accused of abuse remain in charge. My latest: LINKTraditionally, Ubisoft’s AC teams in Montreal and Quebec would alternate projects. Montreal led Origins, Quebec led Odyssey, Montreal led Valhalla. Now that’s changing. Both teams are working on Assassin’s Creed Infinity, which is years away but planned as a live service platform. Details on Assassin’s Creed Infinity are still in flux as it won’t be out until 2024 or later, but it may be some sort of hub that allows people to play multiple AC games both big and small. Or Ubisoft may say screw it and give up to chase the next trend 3 years from now. Several men accused of abuse remain in lead roles after this reorg, which led to complaints on the internal forums. A Ubisoft spokeswoman says they “had their case rigorously reviewed by a third party and were either exonerated or underwent appropriate disciplinary actions” "Assassin’s Creed, a video game franchise set in huge worlds where each one can take hundreds of hours to complete, is getting even bigger. A new project, which is known inside Ubisoft Entertainment SA by the code name Assassin’s Creed Infinity, sets out to create a massive online platform that evolves over time, according to people familiar with its development. Whereas previous Assassin’s Creed games each unfolded in specific historical settings such as ancient Greece or Ptolemaic Egypt, Infinity will contain multiple settings with room to expand to others in the months and years following its debut, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing a project under development. Individual games on the platform might look and feel different, but they will all be connected. Development of an Assassin’s Creed game typically involves thousands of employees across a dozen Ubisoft offices, led by teams in Montreal or Quebec City that alternate duties. The Montreal team helmed last year’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, while Quebec ran the previous game, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. For Assassin’s Creed Infinity, this tradition will also change. In April, Ubisoft unified the Montreal and Quebec teams. Now, they will collaborate on Infinity, and each will have its own creative director, but Quebec will take charge of the franchise. There has long been a rivalry between the two studios that has at times turned acrimonious, according to people familiar with the matter, so this shift may cause some headaches. The organizational change is designed to help the franchise “evolve in a more integrated and collaborative manner that’s less centered on studios and more focused on talent and leadership, no matter where they are within Ubisoft,” the spokeswoman said."

I will reserve my judgement until I actually see what is being done. For I consider the last three AC games to be Live Service already so that boogie man doesn't scare me off right away.

Yep, even with upcoming games I try not to form any real opinion on them until I play them for so many things can change during development or what the developers see in their comparisons and what we see are two drastically different things. So I wait until I play the game itself and frankly it has allowed me to enjoy more games since I took that approach for I don't have any expectations for the game to live up to.

So according to this vid, Ubisoft data reveals people are still buying Odyssey and present players are still in the game. The same goes for other titles so the plan is to continue to update the games; live service. Hence AC Infinity, with both studios continuing to work at AC titles across the board.
I'm guessing earlier games like AC to AC III might not get any updates due to how old they are and it would take more work to plonk a store in them. If this is a case of more potential story content injection, I'm cautiously for it. However, I'm thinking it's more of $$ injection for Ubi than adding more gameplay. Who doesn't know Ubi like the $$ the stores rake in from selling cosmetic stuff?

So they are adding more content to those games, but its bad now because they are calling it "live service".

So they are adding more content to those games, but its bad now because they are calling it "live service". It really depends on what that "new" content is. For AC Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla it has been mostly more of the same. The expansions just add a bit more of the same quests and shiny large areas, no major overhaul of gameplay, no feeling of "this is new and exciting". I am not drawn to try the latest Valhalla DLC (Druid one) and don't think I will bother with whatever they release as an extra paid DLCs next year.
With the new format they might just stick with one gameplay formula and add new maps and story. And that will fail to achieve the differences we had in gameplay going from Origins to Odyssey for example. And I liked how Odyssey approached the combat, but disliked how Valhalla again dumbed it down and made it less exciting.
If it's just adding new maps for a game with the same gameplay loop, I am not buying. Especially when we know Ubisoft is not good with varying the stories and keeping it interesting. It will feel just like a single player MMO and I have SWTOR for that.

That doesn't answer the question I have of why its a problem now that its labeled GaaS. People wouldn't have liked that content then if it was released under prior methods for those reasons you listed. You don't see this making such a negative reaction across the internet because people felt the DLC was recycled or minimal new dynamics added. I am not saying that there aren't the complaints, but it isn't the massive pile on that you see the moment GaaS is added to the mix.

This is exactly how I feel and why Infinity seems like a regression. The teams should be kept separate and focused on new games in new settings. Give them each at least 3.5 years for each title. This is how the franchise was rejuvenated with Odyssey and Origins for fucks sake, why are they now changing their strategy?? Their DLC is mostly copy paste content anyway.

Yeah, its a shame it wasn't a mainline game and was only to be a Vita game for it had a lot of promise. If it had the scope and budget of a mainline AC title it probably would be my favorite.

I took advantage of the "Travel Sale" and got both Rogue and Black Flag. Now the only AC games I don't have are AC1 and Origins. Ubi seems to have a lot of sales, so if/when I'm ready to play Origins, I'm sure I can catch it on sale again. Been playing Liberation again, and I forgot how fun that game was. I really wish we had more games that had the different guises like Aveline did. That's my next AC game to play, after I finish my current MELE playthrough and the Druids DLC. I'm looking forward to it.

I wouldn't avoid the first game and I will admit its not polished like the others, but there is just something about the simplicity it has.

My brother wants to do some Unity co-op, so I played the first two sequences today so that the co-op missions would unlock. It's not a bad game, but I can see why people think it's a buggy mess. In just the first two sequences, I had: - (only) one graphical glitch
- a guard who glitched and refused to move away from the only door out of a room, causing me to have to reload the last checkpoint
- multiple tutorials that completely ignored the keypresses they were supposed to be teaching me
- a camera that sometimes swings around wildly when I navigate sideways with A or D, and sometimes doesn't
I still want to wait until I reach Unity in my series playthrough before I finish the story, but I'm going to do some side missions just to pick up more skills, which I could presumably use in co-op.

Guard AI is horrible in Unity. They also can often see you through walls or completely ignore your distractions. Just abuse the smoke bomb and fight them.

Oh god those compulsory stealth quests and a guard in a building across the street spots you through a wall whilst the guard next to you can't see you behind the lounge.
