Man, I just had another go at AC:Odyssey the other day. The dialogue is...rough, and somehow worse than I remember. It doesn't help that the last game I played was Days Gone, which is by no means Shakespeare, but seemingly leagues ahead of this. Does the story get any better after the first island?

It has ups and downs. Odyssey (surprise) is all about the journey. Some of the more fun and rewarding story experiences are actually in side quests that you find by exploring the islands. The main story won't take you there. Odyssey's charm is also in the gameplay loop and the crazy stuff you can pull out once you level up a bit. Also, mind you, Odyssey is pretty sandboxy with the way you can stumble on the quests, so it can jump from an absurdly ridiculous and over the top funny bit to a very tragic and serious in the next. The game tries to be more lighthearted in general, but there are also a lot of sad and tragic elements.

ClarkKent what saandrig said plus for me it made a big difference playing as Kassandra rather than Alexios but not sure which you are playing at. The game in no way means to take it self to seriously and is definitely not trying to be some literary marvel, it is meant to be a fun exploration game where s Saandrig said you'll stumble on things. The main story can be completed in less than 40 hrs and is nothing overly amazing even by gaming standards but it makes you make some interesting choices with different outcomes based on your choices. Completing the game took me 120 hrs and I really enjoyed them, enough to play two more times. So I guess it depends on what you are looking for and your expectations but I best explain the game as a Fun Romp with some poignant sad moments.

You're basing the entire games story based on the "first island"? 🤨 That's like saying "this movie is crap, but I only watched the first ten minutes."

I found the story very engaging right from the start TBH but obviously people have different likes so maybe this game just isn't for you?????

I did find the story much more interesting once I left the island. It's another "get out of the Hinterlands" situation.

Alright Odyssey is starting to win me over. I really had to persevere through the first two islands(that grind to get at the Wolf was brutal)but I'm having a lot of fun now. I've level'd up the Assassins tree enough that stealth actually feels useful, and hunting down Cult of the Cosmos makes the game feel more like classic Ass Creed.
I've still got my reservations, but I'm beginning to see what the fuss is about now.

I'm kind of done with Cyberpunk for now, so I decided to start AC2 for the first time. I made it the birthing scene where I found out about the asinine controls, and looking up the key bindings isn't helping. I can't rebind them properly if I don't know what "head" refers to. Is "head" a headbutt? Is "leg" a kick? To Google I go.

But for now, I'm losing races to Ezio's brother because Ezio apparently can't climb smooth stone walls ( ), accidentally launching myself off buildings, and using unsuspecting peasants to break my fall Otherwise, it seems interesting so far. Shaun is kind of a grump. It seems he's mellowed over the years.

The stories are quite good in the Ezio games and then there is just Ezio being Ezio which is pretty good as well. The climbing is a lot harder in the old game and yeah falling is bad. And yes Shaun mellows over the games.

I bet it would be tough for me to go back and replay AC2, now. I played Ezio's story so many times, but it was years ago. The mechanics seem to change a bit nearly every game. It would definitely take some time to readjust to the controls and environmental interactions.
AC2 and Brotherhood were by far the highpoints of the series for me. We've had plenty of fun games since, but none that followed the same protagonist through his or her life in that way; and few that so clearly focused on the Brotherhood vs the Order. I miss that Assassins vs Templars focus a lot.
