Squall's entire existence ruins 8 for me (same with 10 with Tidus)I could have tolerated the issues 8 and 10 do have, but those two asshats make it hard. Squall is a downer for sure. He was kinda an anti-social prick too and wasn't too interesting. He grew on me as a character further into the game's story and by the end he's all right with me. It could be worse though. He could be a chicken-wuss like Zell. Like I don't mind characters who have alot of angst, good chunk of my fav characters tend to have a good deal of angst(points to avatar, she's very angsty) but alot of his reasons for it just don't really fly for me and thus he ventures into wangst area. Granted, the translation for 8 was very bad in regards to Squall and made him more of a wangst jerkass then was even intended so I am willing to admit my perception was stained because of that.

Squall wasn't that bad because he didn't have a voice over and didn't really say much from what I remember? Being basically a cold jerk actually helps him in my opinion. One good thing about him to me. I always prefer cold shoulder/little to say main characters more. But it's been awhile since I last played FF8, so I'm not exactly remembering how he was again...
I do remember briefly starting FFX once and played the very beginning, and to me that main character with that voice seems much worse by comparison.

The Platinum Demo was a load of wank. Nevermind, it generally looking like ass, I thought the combat was dreadful. I was interested because the team who's famous for developing the old Kingdom Hearts games worked on Versus XIII, a million years ago when the game was first announced. Lo and behold the gameplay is not like Kingdom Hearts, and not quite as fun either. It's clunky and just.. ugh. If they tweak it and make it anything like say.. Birth By Sleep I'd probably reconsider on the game.
Having said that. The soundtrack is gorgeous, but it is Yoko Shinomura after all, who is a darling when it comes to composing music for Square and Kingdom Hearts in general. Square's got the music down for sure.

4,6,9 and 10 (admittedly largely out of nostalgia) are the only ones I consider to be great myself. The rest vary between mediocre to downright awful. If I include the spin offs it's a bit more complicated what with how that some of them are practically new IP's. I think XV will be close to 6 and 8, most of all. It's very much in the epic vein, I don't think Noctis is a Squall clone though.

If there's one thing FF does deliver, it's music. Despite by issues with the series from 10 and on, I have enjoyed the OST for each game.

FF has always had great music, one of my favorite arrangements
And songs
I sort of think FF6's OST should get more love as well

Uematsu's composition was something else, Shame he left Square behind but much like with Konami, Square's transition from Squaresoft to Square Enix brought some unwelcome changes that key people from the company didn't eye to eye with, thus decided to leave.

Also for those are curious Chris was referencing "Final Fantasy Versus XIII" which is what FFXV was originally supposed to be, a very, very long time ago.
You can see a trailer here
As you can see, it has a lot of the same elements and features, although I must confess the kind of grimmer aesthetic plus Stella > Luna, but overall I'm still excited for FFXV.
A recent FFXV trailer I think demonstrates that there is shift perhaps more to the drama and characters, perhaps.

Playing any of the older FF games before voice overs was really fun for me. When reading dialogue of several characters you can give your own take on how a certain character's voice would sound to you. I would use my imagination and pretend something like, "Squall's voice sounds like this to me" or "Zell sounds like this" and so on. I would even picture friends' voices just so I could make the game more interesting. I think hearing voices in your head as you're reading character lines just kind of happens naturally. As far as Squall's behavior, his silent/cold shoulder/loner traits were similar to Cloud. Cloud was a little more badass and an experienced fighter though. Then you look at Zidane from FF9 and he's almost the complete opposite of the other two where he's more outgoing and friendly with people.

I've played X several times, X-2 I enjoyed too (most fans of the series hate it) I also was big on XII.
XIII, XIII-2 and Lightning Returns I think I liked because I got attached to the characters, but they were markedly lower on the totem pole than the earlier games.
I own VII for ps1 but I never played through it. Just couldn't bring myself to stop playing newer games with better graphics, etc. I was very late to the party.

The thing i love about this argument is that it reminds me how i dont know any of their names, because you could rename them all.
Being 12 i gave them all stupid names that would look great in the dialogue.
Made up example.
"Move your ass, I'mHorny!"
The Brunette chick with the dog had a name i wont mention. But whenever she got a mention it was great.
I miss little things like this in games i don't know why but things like that and Ifrit and the Card game really stuck with me.

You should really give it a try man, yes the graphics are out-dated but the story is excellent and the characters are genuinely interesting. If you still have ur 360 have a look at Lost Odyssey. For me its the last real Final Fantasy game and it has good graphics.

6, 9 and 10 were my favourites (yes, Tidus was somewhat of an annoying little shit, but X had the best combat and leveling of them all and the story was good so I could put up with him.). 7, 8 and 12 were decent but unspectacular. X-2 was...well...lets not go there. 13, I couldn't get past the first couple of hours. And I haven't played 1-5. Or 11. Tried a bit of 14 post reboot and it was decent enough.

I liked Final Fantasy X-2 actually, it was a little different and experimental, but the game mechanics and stuff were actually pretty crazy fluid and stuff. I think it was kind of jarring to have it right after the likes of FFX and it's somber/serious epic story. Paine in retrospect was kind of hard to expect people to enjoy the crazy character designs and stuff, but was really just the precursor to Lightning (and probably Aranea in XV) but it was pretty fun.

Zidane could be a bit of a loner too, such as with the infamous Not Alone sequence, I get where you are going with it all though... I totally agree on the VA, X was really jarring for introducing VA. Also I'm most excited to see about the Spear girl in XV.

Finally I wanted to say on the subject of FFXIV, I completed the OC with a mage and it was a lot of fun, although I played a lot of the other classes as well. Overall, I was really impressed with it, and had a lot of fun but did not get Heavensward partly because money but also it did not look as interesting to me. I wouldn't be shocked though if there were a lot of FFXIV players around and about though, I think about going back to it, I just can't really speak to HW due to not having really played it.

FF7 is my favourite, I'm happy and scared in the same time to play the remake ;_; (and dividing the game in 3 parts... well no comment.... money, I know... ) I also totally love FF Tactics! wonderful dark story and characters ! FF 6 - 9 and FF10 were nice too ^^ I have to say I agree with Zip, a remake of FF8 would be nice because the original story had many flaws, they even changed/cut some parts .... I disliked FF12 and 13. Never played FF11 and 14 because I don't play online (ME MP is an exception) Can't wait for FF15

The worst part about Squall was that he didn't go after Quistis despite her practically throwing herself at him. I felt the same way I wanted to smack him across his face when she tried to open up to him and then rejecting her in that one scene. I still remember a line Squall said back to her, something along the lines "Go talk to wall." When I was younger I had more of a thing for Rinoa but now that I'm older and I think about it, Quistis would be more my type. The thing i love about this argument is that it reminds me how i dont know any of their names, because you could rename them all. Being 12 i gave them all stupid names that would look great in the dialogue. Made up example. "Move your ass, I'mHorny!" The Brunette chick with the dog had a name i wont mention. But whenever she got a mention it was great. I miss little things like this in games i don't know why but things like that and Ifrit and the Card game really stuck with me. My brother did something similar in FF7 where he named all characters dirty names. I remember him specifically renaming Vincent Valentine to Ben Dover. Also, a friend of mine would name all his characters Brad in every single FF game he played, even on his first playthroughs. He said it was amusing to him not knowing who exactly was talking. FF7 is my favourite, I'm happy and scared in the same time to play the remake ;_; (and dividing the game in 3 parts... well no comment.... money, I know... ) I also totally love FF Tactics! wonderful dark story and characters ! I disliked FF12 and 13. Never played FF11 and 14 because I don't play online (ME MP is an exception) Can't wait for FF15 I'm a bit skeptical of the FF7 remake but I'll just wait and see. As for FF10-2, it should have been called Final Fantasy Charlie's Angels. Only played it once and I can't remember if I even beat it (I think I did ) 10-2 wasn't horrible but it wasn't all that great either. Paine was probably my favorite in that one but I really can't remember much else. Never played FF11 through the rest and I honestly don't have any interest in playing any of the recent ones at the moment. I want a remake of FF6!!!!!
