No jails, no police force, no due process. I think an appropriate dialog option other than exile would've been a return to cryo. Not sure how to spoiler tag so consider below this spoilers...
If you release him, then revisit the Hyperion, thats exactly what happens.

True. I think it would've been a good dialog option as a consequence of his actions vs. his choice because his life fell apart.

Hello there, Had some dumb quests but this one takes the cake. So where BW lives such a act holds no penalty? A first-degree attempted murder ranges from 10 years minimum to life in prison. Then we have BW saying (in said quest that is at the start of the game) its perfectly fine, as long as you fail no harm done and you can go home. More insult is when they give the guy community service NOT because he wanted to kill the guy but because he hid the event... I mean WTH?! I found other dumb quests (like the one with the baby some already made a topic about) but this one is so ridiculous to new heights. This was a first degree attempted murder with the guys own words recorded but the only 2 options you have are "let him go" or 2 "lie and punish him for killing that guy". I was expecting a C option where I sentence him for attempted murder but nop... Anyone had issues with this quest or is it just me? Frontier justice. If the murder succeeded, I'd shot him as a deserter who shot his superior and for disobeying direct orders in combat. Exile is the correct solution for me under the circumstances. For hom much was made out of the quest, I would not have minded more of exposition and better options, but it's only one of many side quests, and has an interesting set-up, so I am forgiving of how few options Ryder has in the end. Amnesty vs Exile.

Would it really be worth holding prisoners? I mean at that time the nexus was starving, low on resources, etc etc. you could give him the pass and let him use those resources knowing he had the intent to kill the guy, or you could exile him to fend for his own out in the unknown cluster where many saw exile as a death sentence.

Honestly if I were him I'd have argued justification rather than "It was an accident". The guy he thought he shot was an idiot who was going to get a lot of people killed because of his pride. The defendant tried relieving him of command only to be restrained. Killing the dumbass saved lives. Anyone who can't get at least juror nullification if not an out and out acquittal under those circumstances on a civilian ship doesn't deserve to call themselves a lawyer. Which would give him grounds to appeal based on not being provided competent council.

He doesn't even end up getting punished either. I'm pretty sure when I went to Kadara after exiling him that I met him and he thanked me cuz things are better for him now lol.

Probably because the game is less 'intelligent' in general. Instead of explaining scifi stuff with nerdy theories, they just say 'space SAMagic' now. Hmm, I've got this feeling a few times too. Especially with all the little typos I've been finding all over the place, and I've barely even opened the codex yet...

Then you should try releasing him His wife leaves him after learning what he did (or tried to do) and in the end he returns to stasis pod, because everyone turned on him.

The problem with that is if you use a Mad Max jurisdiction you'll get a Mad Max society.

Yeah, this is why I thought exile was the best available choice. Letting him go certainly didn't seem like a logical choice. Given our (lack of) options, I decided to release him since I thought it would be overall counterproductive to exile him. Do we really need another exile willing to kill if he has to? And his reasoning was understandable, even if you don't agree. I'd consider him a low risk to release. Not saying I'm absolutely correct, just sharing. There's one situation in Kadara slums that get me upset too.. and it's not quest related. It's when we discover two guys are looting a recently died exile, we were given option to leave them or to interfere. Even if I choose to interfere, that annoying SAM stopped me to get involved on this thing. That's one of my WTH moment with BW new conversation. After that, I thought we will be given option to keep interfering or listen to SAM, but instead.. Ryder immediately agrees with SAM. That's my second WTH moment. I'm so glad I'm not the only one that really bugged! What the hell, SAM, and what the hell, writers? That was a pretty un-Bioware-game-like thing to do. Even weirder is that it almost seemed like they were trying to make Ryder look bad. At least, the way Sara sort of pathetically says "Looting is wrong" made me think she was directed to sound that way. This is fiction - not real life. So it shouldn't make sense?

I mean, in the real world the justice system - at least the American justice system, I can't speak to many other countries - is broken as hell. Whether due to corruption, incompetence, a stubborn refusal that bleeds into outright denial that the system is capable of making mistakes, and unconscious biases, people get wrongly convicted and guilty people go free all the time. And this is generally speaking under circumstances where people aren't in danger of starving to death any time soon, and involving people who are, at least, nominally legal professionals.
I'd be more surprised if they didn't fuck it up in the situation they were in, all things considered.

I had the same thoughts... Exiled him anyway because attempted murder is nearly as bad and I'm pretty sure if the Kett blast didn't kill the other guy, Nilken would have kept firing until he was dead.
