Based on my experience so far (which I accept to be relatively limited) it seems to me that for any class you can do the best by just equipping the best sniper rifle and largely ignoring skills. Certainly seems to be possible to do this up to silver, but that's obviously not the best measure. I'm not trying to argue this is true, just saying it's been my experience so far, so I hope there are some good contrary opinions.

did you play ME3 mp when it first came out? you would get kicked out of a gold lobby if you didn't have a infiltrator. this path is better.

Classes don't matter too much, they are just flavor. You use powers to support your gun play - stagger, reposition, surviveability these are the things you are looking for in your powers. At higher difficulty all the damaging powers fall off. So if you are using say a singularity you are using it to CC targets and to deal 20% more damage to anything affected by your biotics, as opposed to using singularity to detonate your enemies, because that damage is minuscule.

No, I played the trilogy to death, but I never tried the multiplayer till MEA, so it is a genuine, relatively uninformed, question.

Ok, I forgot about punching :-) But presumably you can't ignore guns and punching, and just rely on skills. In ME3 single player it was an option to play purely skill based. The option seems to be largely gone in single player MEA too, but I'm interested in opinions about the multiplayer, as I'm actually trying to play it.

Weapons and your ability to hit headshots with them are infinitely more important than powers.. from a damage/killing perspective. Your best investment in early skill points are going to be in passives/fitness.

I barely use my gun, tbh. I'm actually incentivized not to, since I get +30% power damage with a full clip. Paired with the fusion mod that gives +50% power recharge speed, I got all the damage I could wish for with my powers.

(Ok, I dragged it slightly off topic ... ) I had those items in SP too, but I still end up using guns a bit, whereas in ME3 I didn't use guns at all except when the script demanded it (or the citadel dlc beginning). Maybe I'm still missing some equipment, but the cooldowns are still too slow compared with what I remember from ME3. In ME3 you could spam the powers non-stop.

Most classe I would assume you would spread the love a little hitting 2-3 ranks of what you want then max out what you consider most important next...

If you're a new player, level your fitness tree first. If asari adept I would level AF before passives just BC you'll be able to Crowd control a lot better. Concussive shot is also pretty decent to level to charge for cc as well.

I like to drop a couple of skill points into recharge speeds of certain abilities at low levels. The rest of my points go into passives.
Having a 10 or 15% recharge on most abilities is worth it. Faster recharge on anything that CCs is going to help your survivability and damage. Energy drain will help with survivability and combos. Turbocharge recharge is worthy of a few points. Charge is worth all 6 ranks. I'd think going to rank 4 on annihilation would definitely be worth it, possibly even rank 6. Having an extra power cell on some abilities is also worth the 2 points.

Class matters a lot to me. I played human adept, human infliltrator, krogan vanguard and asari adept so far. None of them really needed gun except for certain enemy types.
I was largely motivated by biotic combo & juggernaut shield. They r decent simply with charger x. i often score too 2 & die maybe 3 times per game.
i rarely ever died in me3mp but meamp i can't keep myself from dying. i die a lot like 2-3 times per match.
