In BioWare's defense, most of the squadmates in ME2 had daddy issues. I do believe that forcing Jacob into having a child by another woman, even if you romanced him as FemShep, was a major misstep by BioWare. Why was he the only character to cheat on his previous love interest? I disagree that the black characters are just "tokens." Vivienne, whether you loved or hated her, was an amazingly well-written character that had a really interesting and unique perspective on issues. I wasn't really talking DA, they're two different teams, which is why i didn't mention Isabella or Vivienne. I thought we were talking about the squadmates we had in ME. The OP mentions Jacob, Liam, and Vivienne, so he's implying there is a dislike of all black companions, regardless of the franchise. BioWare does have two separate teams for both franchises. However, it is also worth pointing out that some of the writers bounce back and forth between the franchises.

Unlike seemingly everyone else who played ME though, I don't like Anderson either, not sure why.

I've noticed that black characters in Bioware games (Jacob, Liam, Vivienne) are usually among the most disliked on BSN (new and old). These characters are all very different so I'm curious why people hate all three of them. Now please don't get knee-jerk defensive, I'm not accusing anyone of being racist but I do want everyone to examine their own internal biases. I liked the others. Liam is on the fence with me. On the ship he is okay, but I refuse to let him out in the field because all he does is whine whine whine. There is not a single crew mate he doesn't try to be all righteous and holier than thou with. It's so odd that he is such a bitch on away missions yet seems like a cool guy as long as he has access to that couch of his ... aha ... maybe THAT's it ...

I loved Vivienne and Liam's pretty fun so far. Didn't even realize Liam was considered unpopular aside from the usual Human vs Alien teammate comparison. Him and Cora will never win me over as much as my aliens because I'm a space weirdo.
Jacob was alright in the ME2 intro, all the way up until I talked to him on the Normandy. Then he creeped me out a lil. His convos with my FemShep were weirdly flirty by default and I wasn't down with that (and then I saw his romance on youtube and his "priiiiize" line??? THAT WAS CREEPY AS HECK WHY WHY).
But yea. I think we all know why when it comes down to folk who write them off as ugly teammates.

This. I can understand why some players might hate her, but anyone that argues she isn't well-written couldn't be more wrong. Vivienne is one of the best written of all Bioware's characters, and part of that is why she is so polarizing. She's also got amazing voice acting. O/T but I hope Bioware keeps finding work for Indira Varma.

How can anyone not like Anderson? He was a straight up, solid character with depth and passion. <raises eyebrow> Bet you chose Udina to be Ambassador.

Vivienne has the most boring personal quest in the whole game and her attitude could make somebody dislike her. I like her, I understand her view of the Circle and Mage, I even approve her idea to a certain point.
If you romance Jacob, he is basically the worst character of the ME franchise, otherwise he is ok.
I think the problem here is Bioware never try to make these character the most popular one, they didn't put as much effort into them as the others.

Well for Liam and Jacob it's easy. I'm not racist. I'm sexist and speciesist. I'm a human guy, and so given the opportunity I would rather not take a human guy on my squad with me nor interact with other human males (in Mass Effect games). I'd rather take females and males of other species (Krogan, Drell, Turians, what have you).
I liked Viv in DAI and took her basically everywhere.

I was never a fan of Vivienne's views and position about mages and the Chantry. I was a mage first in all Dragon Age games and supporting the Chantry feels like treason to me. That said, I loved her as a character, we just never saw eye to eye, but I think we both bonded a little when I shared her specialization. I was never able to convince myself to let her become Divine...that was just..no. Jacob was boring and badly written (and yes, I hated that FemShep seemed to want that D no matter what). He was probably the worst and least interesting of the ME2 squadmates. I didn't know people disliked Liam until I came to the boards here. I have my issues with him, specifically is his attitude and his emotional instability. He's a loose cannon. If he was suppose to be a cop and then in crisis response...He makes me feel like he'd be the type of guy to shoot a guy for holding a wallet because he can't control himself. He is consistent though, and that I like. In DA:I once I modded it so that I could choose everyone's specialization, I rolled with Cassandra, Vivienne, and Dorian. ME2: Grunt ( Krogans) and Garrus (a true bro). ME:A: Drak ( *swoons* Krogans) and either Vetra or Peebee (though less so later on), mostly because I loved how they interacted with each other.

Anderson from MET is probably the best portrayal of a black person in the entire Mass Effect universe. He was educated, articulate, intelligent and He came across as moral and human and unbiased concerning his judgment of Shepherd and the things surrounding him. You also get a sense of a flawed history with him. He gave the impression that he really believed in a good and right way and he regretted his genuine mistakes.
His voice actor also did a very, very good job.
Chalk it up to poor writing if you want, but it feels in general like all the black people since thing are mere shadows of how Anderson was portrayed.

Sigh.
Why does everything have to revolve around skin colour? Jacob was disliked for his abysmal romance, Femshep practically clawing at his pants with every dialogue choice and generally being an uninteresting character aboard a ship with numerous compelling ones. Haven't played long enough to real form an opinion on Liam beside "seems cool enough". People aren't hating on any of these characters because they're black. If that were the case, why is Ashley still seen as a space racist by many? Even Miranda received plenty of dislike despite being highlighted as the femme fatale.

I get the feeling that Vivienne was meant to be hated? I'm on the fence about her to be honest, sometimes I like her and then other times I want to smack her. My biggest complaint about her is one I had about Miranda in that several of her conversations where skewed in her favor. i.e. you can't argue with her. In ME2 there is a conversation with Miranda about Cerberus and how so many of their past projects have been shady Miranda has all sorts of responses to Shepard's accusations, but most of her responses are half arsed and could easily be argued but Shepard isn't given the opportunity. It's frustrating and that's kinda how I feel about Vivienne.
Jacob is kinda there and he actually bugs me because I feel like he could have been a great character... if he'd had a different VA. Jacob comes off as a stereotypical boy from the 'hood and I feel like that comes not from his writer, but from his voice actor. I also absolutely hate the way FemShep acts around him (and that one is on Jennifer Hale). It's irritating.
I actually like Liam, he's a dork, and a screw up, but he's a lovable dork and screw up. His heart is in the right place, but I don't know where the hell his brain is. I feel like Liam is just impatient and has poor impulse control and gets him (and his friends) in trouble.

If people don't think race plays a part in some people's dislike of the characters then I think they are incredibly naive. Yes, of course race does play a role in how people perceive a character pretending otherwise would be intellectual dishonesty.

I think it's more likely that BSN is biased against poorly written, shallow characters. If that were true no one would like Cora or Miranda. Arguably though Miranda became more human and less shallow by ME3, but point still stands in ME2 she was as shallow and as boring as you could get.

Nah, personally I found that Jacob just lacked a personality and was a bit dull (same thing happened with Kaidan in ME1, but at least he got better in ME3, Jacob not so much). Also I didn't like his power and weapon combination, so he got benched. Liam seems to have a similar personality problem as well, at least he had a fun loyalty mission. Also he has durability problems in combat. Tried different specs on his powers and passives, but no joy, he gets taken down quite often, even from regular enemies.
Vivienne was awesome imo. I agreed with most of her opinions (would never let her be Divine though, Cass is my choice there). Also she was amazing in combat, I could send her off on any enemy solo (even high dragons) and she'd tank everything and deal out quite a bit of damage in return.

Jacob is fine, but I generally avoid squad mates whose primary weapon is shotgun who also isn't krogan. I benched tali and jack for the same reason
I didn't actually know people didn't like vivi. I think she is generally angry at my inquisitor during conversation.
Liam is insufferable, he and Peebee represent everything I hate about characters in andromeda.

Also confess that I take Liam on rides a lot just to listen to how the other characters bash him. Love how hard Drack talk him down. [edit] I also have to confess, my favorite skin color is Blue... I am racist and mean to anything not blue
