A note continuing on what I wrote on fountain pens. I recently bought two plastic (it's also available in stainless, but plastic is lighter and cheaper) Parker Vector pens, from their new production. The model has been unavailable for some years while Parker have tried to reconstruct their brand and quality. And they're good. Damn good! They're not as fancy as the cheap pens I recommended before, but they're better. The nib is the small and stiff nib that Parker sports in their Vector, IM, and Urban pens. Stiff but very smooth and with perfect ink flow. Most common nib is medium. It doesn't come with a converter (purchased separately), but if you're new to fountain pens you may want to use cartridges anyway. And Parker's cartridges are the best. (And it has to be Parker's proprietary, others don't fit.)
As I said, it's not a fancy pen. If you have annoying family members there is a risk someone will trash it, if they pick it up and can't figure out how it works, believing it's some kind of defect throwaway pen. It's not fancy. It's just a working pen. But if you want to try a slim, light, neat, extremely trouble free and practical fountain pen, check it out.

I've always been a Europhile, and this amazing series is so well done and informative. It covers different periods in the UK. I'd love to see the equivalent in Scandinavia and France.

I've been watching two TV series lately which I recommend. Coincidentally both were cancelled after the first couple seasons because of money issues.
For historical drama fans, I recommend Rome, the HBO series.
For fantasy drama fans, I recommend Camelot.

I recommend you getting a precision watchmaker-screwdriver set. You know, those miniature hex, torx and Phillips head screwdrivers that come in a small leather pouch. When I bought the set I thought its a neat gimmick no work bench is complete without but something I'll hardly ever need - boy was I wrong! I needed those screwdrivers a ton of times and I was so glad I had them because I could not even lend them from a neighbor or something because nobody has them. You have no idea how often I disassembled something only to completely unexpectedly come across one of those annoying tiny screws, I would have been totally screwed* a couple of times without those screwdrivers. (* pun totally intended). These....

How do you shave?
This is something I've mentioned before (to no avail) but it was a long time ago and probably on the old boards.
Anyway, my guess is that you employ any of the following methods.
1. Razor (safety razor, not knife) and some shaving "gel". 2. Razor and some shaving foam (on pressure can). 3. Razor and just wetting your face. 4. Electric shaver dry.
Am I right? Well, you're doing it 'wrong' then. My guess would be that those of you employing the rather uncomfortable and expensive method 3 or 4, do it because you get skin problems otherwise (3 is expensive because it rapidly kill your expensive blades). My guess would also be that those of you who employ method 1, 2 or 3, fight a futile battle trying to rinse your razor multi-blades from stubborn hair and gunk that clogs between them.
5. Here's the optimum. Get a shaving brush and a classic, old fashioned, hard shaving soap. Not the easiest thing to get hold of, but with online mail order anything is possible.
There's a difference between hog/boar bristle and badger, but it doesn't matter. (I prefer bristle, because I think badger is too soft, but it doesn't really matter). Soap comes in either stick form or a cake for a bowl. Again, it doesn't matter. Stick usually comes in cheaper brands and you just wet your face, drag the stick around a bit, and then brush up a lather directly on your face with the brush. It only takes seconds. It's a fast efficient process. With a bowl you pick up the soap with the brush. Some bowl soaps are so hard that professional barbers 'peel' a new soap with a knife to get into it. But after a few days use you usually break through the surface and things get easier. Other soaps are very easily dissolved. When it comes to how they shave, my experience is that the harder the soap, the better, but again it doesn't matter.
Why then?: Excellent, crisp, clean, fast and comfortable shave. No skin problems. The razor easily rinse under the faucet to become perfectly clean. Every time. With no further effort. Economy. Your razor blades last forever.
P.S. Real shaving soap - for use with brush and water of course - is also available in soft paste form in tubes (cream). That's also okay, and results in a similar positive experience. However, hard soap is better.
Edit: P.S. Today I came to a conclusion. After having had three 'bowl' soaps, I now think bowl soaps should be used exactly as sticks. Wrap it up in aluminum foil to keep it clean and dry - and to have something to hold on to. Cut it in two halves if you want a more convenient shape. It works better. Faster and easier, and the soap is kept much more fresh. Because that's my main reason. Bowl soaps become disgustingly icky after a while. Particularly on the underside. They always wet and dry slowly. While a stick is kept dry all the time.
Another thing: Don't make the mistake of thinking this post is all BS. There is a big difference in performance between real, hard shaving soap and all the modern garbage. Read my four points above under 'Why then?' again. Your fancy, modern 'gel' or whatever can't compete.

The other day, I took delivery of two new, cheap, Chinese fountain pens that I was curious about. The time is a little bit short. I'd usually give it a couple of months of experience before I pass judgment. So this is not final judgment, but they are remarkably promising.
The most remarkable is the 'Wing Sung 699 vacuum filler'. This is just the most convincing – and possibly highest grade – Chinese fountain pen I've ever encountered. It's really, really nice. Very nice indeed.
You can find it for sale on ebay from a number of different Chinese sellers. The price differs between sellers, but is generally not much in excess of $20. You should not just buy the cheapest though. You need to pay attention to which models the seller offers. The Wing Sung 699 comes in 24 different variations, and sellers do not typically offer all of them. First of all, they can have two different ink mechanisms. Vacuum filler or Piston filler. (I ordered one of each, but have only received the Vacuum filler yet) Then, they come in four different colors. Translucent Brown, Translucent Blue, Translucent Black, Clear Transparent. Finally, you need to make the most important choice: The nib. It comes in EF, F and M. They also describe these as 0.38, 0.5, and 0.7. I don't like fine nibs and extra fine nibs, so I made very sure I got M/0.7 .
So, Vacuum or Piston? Well, there's not much to choose between. Both have the “advantage” of being integrated filling systems which are both generally regarded as “higher grade” than the cheapo cartridge/converter system. Unfortunately, an extremely experienced FP user – me, myself -, consider the cheapo cartridge/converter system as the best system there is. But it's fun with variation, they look cool, and they have much greater ink capacity (which might not always be an advantage).
Both Vacuum and Piston mechanism require that you submerge the entire nib and part of the section, into the ink, to draw up ink. Many types of ink bottles present an early problem here. Sooner or later, unless you possess the wonderful Akkermann bottle, you will have to first transfer an amount of ink into a tube or something. (With a converter system, by contrast, you can always fill the converter with a syringe.)
Piston filler is maybe easier to understand, including how to empty and wash out. Vacuum filler requires slightly more thought, but is mechanically simpler and sturdier. My Vacuum filler is just fine. I haven't received the Piston filler yet.
For some reason, newbies on fountain pens almost always want extra fine and fine nibs. I seriously don't understand why? ...But to each his own.
The other Chinese FP I got, isn't quite that sassy. But in it's own way it's positive too. It's a 'Jinhao Centennial 100'.
Jinhao have always made some very workable and sturdy fountain pens. They may not look like $1000 (or even $100), but they rarely let you down. I'm mainly talking about the wellknown Jinhao 159 and Jinhao X750 models. I've recommended them before in this thread.
The 'Centennial 100' doesn't use as much metal tubing as those pens, and is therefore somewhat lighter. Instead, the body and cap are made of some extruded tubing of plastic of some sort. They have mixed in a lot of contrasting pieces in the half-transparent plastic mass, before extruding. They have done this, in order to make it look like it's machined from a solid block of cast acrylic/lucite/lucerite/polyester/alumlite-whatever. Sorry, such a pen would be way more expensive, even if it was made in China. Nope, it's put together from a few injection molded pieces, some rolled metal tubing pieces, and two extruded plastic tubes. And it has a cartridge/converter ink mechanism. - But hey! It still looks good.
And it works well, writes well. This pen too, I've only had for a day. But it is convincing. No final judgment yet, but I kinda trust it to deliver. Jinhao generally do, with their bigger #6 nib pens, as I've already claimed. This has the same nib, feed and converter as the 159 and X750 and X450 pens.
The Centennial 100 is also available from a number of sellers on ebay. There are many color variations and both F and M nibs. There are even two different clip styles. Typically they are less than $20.

It's a few months later again now, and I just have to double down on the Jinhao Centennial 100. I'm now thinking that overall, considering all aspects, this might be the best cheap fountain pen in existence. And it doesn't even look cheap.
Now, after a couple of months, the manufacturing grinding has been worn off from the point and it writes smooth and lovely. It's easy to maintain and fill, clean and reliable, has the most practical ink system (converter & cartridge). It's reasonably well sealed (meaning it doesn't dry out quickly).
I have nothing to criticize. But don't post it (putting the cap on the end of the pen when you write). You'll harm the threads in the cap. (I never post pens. It's a bad habit, IMO).

Here's something that might help somebody. How to get rid of toe nail fungus.
For more than a decade ago, my brother in law and I tried each other's hiking boots. And that is actually a stupid thing to do, and, unfortunately, not the first time he did it. And I got nail fungus.
Anybody who's familiar with this shit, knows that it's impossible to get rid of. There are various medicines and preparations that are dangerous to your health, but they don't really work. There are myriads of other tips available online, that don't work either.
But they do work to hold it back. I used filing down the nails and using old, unrefined canola oil, to keep it in check. I had a hunch the oil could work because it contains strong, natural anti-fungi-toxins. And it seemed to. Unfortunately, it was an old bottle and was soon finished. I haven't seen unrefined, raw oil again. The common, refined food stuff is worthless. One might try Colza oil instead? Anyway, it doesn't matter because it doesn't get rid of the nail fungi anyway. Only brakes it and keeps it under control, just like any other method.
Anyway, one day a doctor told me there really is a way to get rid of it! And it's not even hard to do. ...If your job allows it.
Because you need to go barefoot. Always, in practice. That's all it takes. No socks and no shoes indoors. Open sandals and no socks outside. Mind you, it does take time. 1½ - 2 years, before it's completely gone. But unlike every other method, it really works and you do get rid of it.
