I mean where they actually can smile without it being a permanent smirk. So they can actually frown, smile, and whatever else. Which preset does this? Specifically for women.

I'm playing with an altered preset 5, and I think she emotes decently most of the time. I can try to dig up a smile screenshot if you want. I may have a few video clips as well.

This is based off of preset 9, and I think expresses okay. The mouth does weird stuff sometimes, but so do all of them. imgur.com/a/0pQWuI think all of the presets tend to swing between expressionless and extreme derp with very little middle ground, tbh.

None of them? All expressions of anger, sadness, disgust, and happiness are just DERP face.

I would say Preset 1. She has nice, neutral face and the expressions are visible without being overdone. There are, however, still some weird ones but Preset #1 is one the nicest when it comes to that. I played a bit with #1 and #9 and I have to admit that #1 is definitely more neutral without overdoing stuff. I like the general look of my #9 more but the expressions are so much better on #1.

Preset 9 is the one I use. She looks completely fine in most of the "ew" cutscenes to me.
For male I would use the one with the... blah, I don't know how to describe it. I'm going to bed.

Preset 5 can be a really good emoting face, but you can't alter the mouth position (up/down) TOO much. Definitely bring the mouth depth as far in as you can, tweak nose depth and chin to make it look natural, and widen the lips just a hair. Yeah, I spent too much time with #5, trying to get her right, but she smiles and smirks quite well. Frowning is still derp-fest, but I haven't seen a Bioware character pull of anything CLOSE to a believable frown yet. Link to imgur photo gallery below with some expressions. link
edit: fixed broken link Second edit: If I were to do this face over, I'd narrow the cheekbones a bit, narrow the jaw and chin a hair, then raise the chin a tick or two. I like the "heart-shaped" face, so I wouldn't alter it too drastically, but in some angles she's just a bit too wide-faced.

Preset 5 for females. She looks human, anyway! I widened her jaw and shortened her chin to give her more of a pixie face to match the haircut, and she is looking really nice so far (ie, all emoting looks natural and no weird wrinkles). Preset 1 also looks pretty good emoting, with only occasional nose wrinkles that make no sense anatomically. Tried presets 9 and found her lips really gross and weird looking (like 2 squids mating) when speaking. Preset 8 also looked weird to me (something about the mouth looks odd). The female preset with the giant eyes (not sure the number) has a really weird forehead with wrinkles that are really hideous. My preset 5 image below. The 2nd is the closest I have to a smile shot!

I played with 5 and now 9 and i have to say 5 is the more expressive/human one. My 9 Sara tends to have these vacant saucer eyes, and it's easy to mess her up. I went through like 9 different Sara 9's because something was always off that caused her to look extra derpy in certain angles. The mouth was the worst offender, it looked normal in the CC but once in game she looked retarded. Preset 5 is my fav, she still has that vacant stare sometimes but her eyelids are lower so it's not as apparent as preset 9

Definitely bring the mouth depth as far in as you can, tweak nose depth and chin to make it look natural, and widen the lips just a hair. Funny thing is that IMO this is the process to make most of the characters look good and normal. Especially with a lot of male presets - bringing the mouth depth in, making nose smaller and aligning the chin with it seems to be the MUST for every preset I tried. I call this "normalization" BioWare seems to like face profiles with very prominent nose shapes and lips.

Like many have said, 5 is probably your best bet to minimize either the ugliness or the derp face factor. 9 feels like it can be made pretty in the character creator, and it has a couple moments where it looks good at certain angles, but in practice it's the weirdest emoting face of them all. (imho). The amount of suck in the CC is just astounding.

I remember the flap in ME3 when the FemShep everyone voted on looked completely different in game/in CC than she did when she was voted on. The biggest difference being that in game, she looked like she'd been punched a couple dozen times, or been stung by a bunch of bees. Puffy FTW?

Female Ryder's presets 1 and 9 are very expressive, but preset 5 looks the most natural imo. Also preset 5 actually looks related to Ellen.

I'm playing with preset 9 and I adjusted just about anything. Brow height up, depth out, mouth lower and more outward (lip depth 15 orso), nose lowerered, chin more up and forward And she animates just fine, I think. And I'll take any excuse to show her, so.. here ya go

I barely modified preset 5 in terms of eyes/nose/mouth/chin, and I haven't had any notable animation issues. Now I'm starting a run with the first preset, so I'll get to see how that works out.
