I bought The Conjuring 2 on VOD (excellent movie btw, I recommend it), and I'm a massive fan of horror media (films in particular), so I was wondering what you guys liked.

I am a massive horror fan. I've seen so many it isn't funny.
In categories:
Ghost/supernatural types: I'm not usually into these kinds of horror movies but Insidious really stands out. Movies don't really scare me in general but this one, with the dark atmosphere, right angles etc actually succeeded in scaring me shitless for a few seconds.
Guilty pleasures: I know what you did last summer and Scream. The former isn't really scary and the latter was more hilarious than anything else.
Slashers: Loved Hostel and Saw. Dont know if you could really call them slashers per se but didn't know what else to call them.
Obscure: This gem came out in the 80's - Sleep away Camp. Its bizarre in the fact that most of the characters were in their pre-teens, but due to some themes in the movie I wouldn't call it a kids movie.
Controversial: One of the most shocking movies I've ever seen and my favourite due to its brutal realism -- Cannibal Holocaust. Its uh, banned in many countries.

The Fog The Shining Friday the 13th Halloween 1-3 The Omen Amityville Horror
I saw Friday the 13th when I was young, my dad let me see it one it was on television. The last part where Jason exploded out of the water in the dream sequence scared the hell out of me. I ran into my room and hid under the covers. When my mom came home from work and found out he let me see that movie, he chewed him out.
I prefer a good ghost story/scarey than these lame blood gore slasher films. Even though I did mention Friday and the three Halloween movies, it was before they got stupidly gorey.

Why would you list Scream as a guilty pleasure? It's acclaimed as a cult classic and is all around and excellent movie, both an efficient slasher flick and a clever parody of the genre. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination. Anyway, if there's any movie that I've seen that I would call a guilty pleasure of mine, it's I Am Legend. It's a pretty crap movie and is hilariously disrespectful of the source material that it's based on, but it is entertaining to see Will Smith hold entire conversations with mannequins.

As a kid, I watched some of the Evil Dead movies. I was so afraid that I never tried another one of those movies until I watched Ash vs Evil Dead last year and then decided to watch the whole trilogy.
Sometimes life lessons are way more horrible than any horror movie, and here's one: kids are stupid.

I like me some sci fi-horror. Alien, The Thing and Event Horizon. If only they could make a directors cut of the latter.

The Thing & Alien (1,2,3 &4) plus AvP 1 only.
Child's Play 1 &2 (mainly because Chucky was great)
Hostel (it actually made me cringe a couple of times and that doesn't happen often.)

Okay, here's a few in no particular order (I'm also a massive horror fan): The Evil Dead (original) The Thing (Carpenter's) Halloween (Carpenter's) Hellraiser I and II Alien I and II Wishmaster I and II Poltergeist I and II Prom Night I and II (competely unrelated films except for the name - Prom Night 2 is hilarious) The Stepfather I and II (the originals with Terry O'Quinn) The Guardian (evil tree-worshipping nanny flick) The Bad Seed (one of the original Evil Kid movies) The Omen The Legend of Hell House The Abominable Dr. Phibes The Return of the Living Dead The Devil's Rejects Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street/Texas Chainsaw Massacre/Child's Play series With all due respect to the people that love it, I freaking hated Kubrick's version of The Shining...

When i saw my first horror movie i was way to young and it scared me quite a bit. And i'm not going to tell you what movie it was because when i see it now i laugh about it. But somehow it made me immune to the other horror movies out there. Until i saw the movie The Descent it's not that it gave me nightmares or something but it's just a scary movie that's all.

Unfortunately, the unused footage was accidentally destroyed in storage, and in all likelihood will never be seen unless someone somewhere made a backup and never told anyone for nearly 20 years after the movie released.

I saw The House when I was a little boy (without my parents knowing about it. They were not happy with my older brother for letting me watch it). Was really scary then and I have actually never seen it since. Would probably find it more funny than scary now

I like me some sci fi-horror. Alien, The Thing and Event Horizon. If only they could make a directors cut of the latter. Interesting, it is the same for me. Horror is easily my least favorite type of movie, it usually does absolutely nothing for me. But I´m a fan of Alien and The Thing and also was one of the few who seemed to like Event Horizon (based on the reviews that one got), though they clearly belong to the genre. If the Alien movies had an almost identical plot but were set f.ex. in an "Evil Dead" type of setting, my guess is that I would not have liked them either. No idea why .

Horror and gore for the mere sake of it is pretty meh. Horror on it's own is just not enough. However... - Throw in some campy comedy and it's vastly improved. That's why Evil Dead 2 > Evil Dead - the original tried to take itself too seriously.
- Add a lot of suspense before the big reveal like the original Alien or John Carpenter's remake of The Thing.
- Make it stylish or creepy like Hellraiser or Pan's Labyrinth (which barely really qualifies as "horror" I suppose).
- And if it can satirise its own genre, like Cabin in the Woods, that's a definite plus.
Traditional "Slasher" type moves like Friday the 13th or Halloween (or even the Texas Chainsaw Massacre) with the exception of the odd jump-scare, just slightly bore me; no matter how much horror/fear the director attempts to inject into a movie it's an eminently passive form of entertainment ... it will never compare to playing say, Doom 3 in a darkened room with headphones on. ... and the Blair Witch Project was one of the worst movies ever made ... and they've remade it. *sighs*

Love horror movies, Japanese horror titles should be in here, like the original Ring not the lame as f*ck Murican remake. Seeing as many have already listed what I was gonna say I'll add something different. Cabin in the Woods (2012) was alot of fun, enjoyed it. The Babadook (2014) unsettling and weird as fuck, quite good tho. The Others (2001) really enjoyed this ghost story, had a great twist too. Wolf Creek (2005) was also quite good, find serial killer documentaries/movies very interesting anyway. Was loosely based on the backpack murderer in the Australian outback during the 90s, Ivan Milat.

I love horror movies. I was brought up on them, with Child's Play being my first at around age 6 (who even lets their kid watch that?). Despite having constant nightmares as a kid, I persisted and found myself hooked on the Child's Play, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street and Evil Dead series. But everyone else has pretty much listed these and all the other ones that bring back fond memories of refusing to not sleep without the hallway light being left on.
I think the only movie that I have genuinely gotten the creeps from in years is Sinister. Loved it. Though I've been told the sequel isn't that great.

I'm more partial to horror films that are psychological in nature, or have elements of an eldritch abomination. Alien abduction movies are about the closest to scary that I get, mainly because you have no control in the concept and are literally the plaything of beings you can't comprehend that can screw with you with total impunity.

Eldritch, Lovecraftian horror is my favorite above all else. A well-done adaptation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth would be the best movie ever, IMO. There is actually a fairly well done indie production of Call of Cthulhu, even shot as a silent film and in black and white to really emulate it being a story told in the 1920's.

Not a horror movie but a horror anthology that I adore. American Horror Story (2011-)Favourite seasons will always be the Murder House (season 1) and Asylum (season 2) Show isn't the same since Jessica Lange left I feel, fabulous actress. Each season is also cleverly connected to another. Reading the history behind what influenced each location/story is gloriously fascinating/disturbing too.
