Pretty good stuff. The best being the first two - the Last Wish and sword of Destiny. The five saga books were great but had an underwhelming ending imho. Lady of the Lake is probably the weakest book and it's also the Last primarily because of one or two blatant deus Ex machina but also for the fact that the ending is clearly a cliff hanger and it seems to me that the author wanted to continue the plot but hasn't in 19 years.

moreover, the games do a great job of being the sequels to the novels. I heard that the author is planning on doing more Witcher books but only because of popularity factor that the series has right now.

They got shit after the mage coup and Ciri is one of the worst characters I've ever came across. Brenna was cool though.

The whole rats subplot was insufferable. Funnily enough, she's not annoying when she's with bonhart. I disagree with your first part and want to know why you think that? Personally Baptism of Fire is the best book in the ciri saga primarily because Geralt plays a more bigger role since it focuses mostly on him instead of ciri.

I read the first book and got partway through the second. I intend to get back to reading it at some point. I love it so far, though.

I hate characters being kept weak for stupid reasons. Like Ciri swearing off using magic because... reasons. I didn't actually read the books, what I heard about them didn't make me massively interested. >I didn't read the books You should. Or you can listen to the audiobook format.

I started reading them a year ago, read halfway through Last Wish before stopping then picking it up again this year and finishing it to completion along with the other books. It's really good despite the cliff hanger ending.

I've read all the books when they first came out in Russian translation. Have not touched anything in English, so IDK about quality of translation. IIRC, the first huge volume was collection of short stories plus Last Wish plus Sword of Destiny without saga. It was a pretty impressive 700-page volume that came out about 20 years ago. I read it overnight and through the next day, just could not put it down. Finished it straight in about 16 hours or so.
The saga is also good but more patchy. Some parts are better than the others. Not sure why it took them so long to publish it in English though. This is classical fantasy already in Eastern Europe. Anyhow, better later than never.

Thought about reading them until I learned how salty the author was because the games have been getting more attention.
So instead, I went and played through The Witcher 3 again :^ )

I love the novels. They are wonderful.
Sword of Destiny is my favorite, it's very emotional. Lady Of The Lake is a great final book with an absolutely crushing depressing ending. But a very fitting and poetic one.
The only one I found a bit boring was The Tower Of The Swallow.
Totally agree that the English translation got better with each publication.
Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri are great characters. And Geralt's companions are very well written too. These novels are not great in terms of plot or world building. The world is a spin on European mythology and fairy tales, mostly parody. It doesn't really add anything new. You've got elves and dwarves etc. But the witcher world has its own charm through the quirky characters. These books are really not unlike Bioware's character driven narratives. It's ALL about the characters, about the epic bond between Geralt, Yen and Ciri. Unlike in the game, it's not really about saving the world, it's about saving Ciri from the world. About protecting and being with the people you love. It's a story about the most badass parents that ever lived.
Life is brutal and short, so hold on to the people you care about. It's the only thing that matters. The people we love are our destiny. The whole time Geralt scoffed at destiny, thinking it was missing the heart that usually binds people. He rejected the cold calculation behind such claims of fate. Not realizing that he was not destined to claim Ciri for the witchers like a merchandise but to LOVE her. And that he did. And that's all he needed to do to burn the world down if need be to find her and see her again.
The novels are a ridiculously romantic and idealistic tale of the power of love. About compassion and friendship. About family.
