My garden has been a total failure and disaster this year. Too many trees throwing too much shade on garden plot, almost no rain all year, unprecedented amount really really hot weather. All = crop fail.
I feel lucky that gardening is a hobby and not the real source of food for me as I'd starve this year.

Boooooooooooooo my rototiller will not start, I knew this day would come when you do zero maintenance on it for like 15 years of use. I guess I shall try a new spark plug first of all. Will have to go out and buy one tomorrow.

Yay! One of the few times in life where something goes wrong with something and you have a list of things to fix it and the first one on the list is actually doable and actually works!
- Have to remove the old spark plug and one can do it with a socket but there is an actual tool that is used for removing spark plugs. 'Wait I have one of those things somewhere I have seen it before and always wondered what it was for!' rummage rummage rummage through tool kits and drawers and such....I found it!
- Now I fully expect this spark plug to be in there so tight it will be not removable or something will break if I force it. Nope! A little nudge and out it comes, I look at it, yeah this thing looks corroded and dirty.
- Go to home depot with the old plug in hand. Ask where the spark plugs might be and the young clerk tells me which aisle, which I know is not correct, oh well I find them in another location, now which plug do I need. I notice there is a helpful code in the old plug 705cjm or something like that. Nope, nope, finally at the very top i see plugs that say they are replacements for a number of codes one of them being mine, boo ya! I grab two plugs.
- Now at the location of the plugs is one of those large portable ladders on wheels they have at home depot for the staff to reach things. A nice young pretty clerk comes over and says oh! let me move that it is in your way!' I say oh no bother I found what I want' but she being nice insists on moving it. So I tell he I want to climb to the top of the platform and have her push me around the store. Which got a laugh out of her.
- Home I go and put the new plug in the rototiller, no issues installing it. Give it a go, pull the chord, cough cough, sputter. Oh it is getting spark! Try again with more choke...brap a rum rum rum. Yes! It starts and I proceed to rototill the back garden with success.
TL/DR; version.... Beerfish got his rototiller to work.

Beerfish got his rototiller to work. It's always a great feeling when you get something into working order again. Quick advice for owners of mowers/rototillers/whatnot: When your engine has been sitting for a while, it's a good idea to drain the float bowl. Just open the bolt on the bottom of the bowl for a turn or two, and drain about a half-cup of fuel. That will get rid of possible water in the bowl.

Just planted my gladiola bulbs in my planters. I should plant my onions or pumpkins today as well. Will see if i feel like it later on. I am very happy there are purple finches about, I am listening to their sweet song going on in my back yard as i type.

Garden all planted puff puff puff, very stripped down version of what i usually plant.
This year gladiolas for flowers and for veggies: pumpkins, onions and potatoes, also tossed in a sweet potato that was sprouting just in case it might grow.

Just bought plants for 160 bucks and that was just the bare minimum! Lots of Habanero chilis, they even had my favorite ones - brown chocolate Habaneros. Very spicy, unique taste and kind of hard to find. Also zucchini, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cucumbers, edible pumpkins... Sadly I could not find any Japanese wineberries, those are among my favorite berries and my 4 wineberry bushes sure would love some more company. Unfortunately they are so rare around here.
Anyway, I am also trying something new this year - mulberries. I read they taste great, look cool and grow fruits the entire summer too so I got three little plants. I read they cannot survive temperatures below freezing until they reach a certain size so I wont be planting these in my garden yet, pots it is.

I have had a lot of problems with my garden though, after amazing initial success with potatoes and parnsips the last two years were extremely bitter. They don't grow anymore - well they kind of do, the green bits grow a ton but the potatoes and parsnip roots stay comically small. I have not changed the soil nor any of the procedures, its not pests - not sure what I'm doing wrong. First I thought the soil was too hard for the roots to grow, but even in new soft soil they don't perform at all.

Sadly I could not find any Japanese wineberries, those are among my favorite berries and my 4 wineberry bushes sure would love some more company. Unfortunately they are so rare around here. We've had them for years and they'd always grow back like crazy but the past few years they've been grown back less and less and are currently only a third of their former size, and I'm worried they'll die completely soon. No idea why. Probably too dry. Stupid climate change... They are also super hard to find in Germany. Dehner used to have them but not sure they still sell them. Bought them like 15 years ago. So no idea. Next time I go there I'll check and maybe buy new ones. They are indeed awesome! The vegetable garden (Schrebergarten in German) is almost back to it's former glory. Due to my messed up fingers I wasn't able to weed at all last year and the result was a horrific out of control jungle... Getting rid of the literal weed carpet was a huge pain but now there's only a small strip of wilderness left. Maybe 3-4 more hours. Planted onions this week, almost too late. Took a while to find a store that still sold them and half of them were already shriveled up. But it will do, I hope. Also planted radishes and beans. Most of the strawberry plants did not survive. So the harvest this year will be poor. New plants are too expensive. Also hoping somebody will give us tomato plants again. Will grow them in pots though because they always die out in the open when it rains too much. Used to put them under the roofed terrace but we're STILL missing the new roof 2 years after renovations completed... Undecided yet on pumpkins. The harvest was never good and last year was a complete disaster. But there's not much else that can be grown below/around the Nashi pear trees... So I'll probably give this another shot. The seeds are always so expensive so it's barely worth it for the 3-4 pumpkins we'd get out of them on a "good" harvest. And they're always too small too. At least the rhubarb never disappoints. Although, the stalks have grown thinner over the years too. But they're still the pride of the garden and the envy of the neighbors, lol.

The pear, fig and cherry tree look promising so far, lots of initial fruit growth going on there. The berry bushes are blooming atm so need to wait to see what will happen there and the herbs are doing good. It seems it will be dry for the next few weeks to come so might need to water my garden at some point if needed. As long as the grass does good I will not go there though. I planted some summer bloomers like the dahlia bulbs (orange coloured bulbs this year ) ,which should bloom pretty much last this summer, the other day. My garden is starting to look 'mature' now, I have been working on it since I bought my house in 2016. Birds are moving in more and more which I really enjoy. My goal is to support as many kinds of birds as possible on my patch of garden

I stopped planting gladiolas ever since that pesky orange coloured beetle started infesting it when I lived at my old house.
One of the orange coloured dahlias I planted is this one:
There should be 5 different ones and if I am able to transfer pictures to my pc I will make on my phone, I will transfer them on this thread.

I spotted something really cool in my garden today, the blue carpenter bees have returned! Those are relatively rare bees, they are the biggest bees in Europe, almost the size of hornets, they don't have a hive, they live solitary lives and they lay their eggs into dead wood. Since most dead wood is removed very quickly in most gardens and in most woods, they have become a rare sight. I have a pile of rotting wood near my compost pile just for the insects, and it makes me happy that they make use of it. I also don't mow the lawn in spring so the insects can feed from the early flowers. Its totally vital for them, especially around here since I'm surrounded by what I call agriculture wasteland. Blue carpenter bee: Also, I found plants of my favorite paprika, black Hungarian paprika. Extremely taste, this time I will harvest its seeds.

Gardening is fun... except when it gets scary. I've done some preliminary digging in an old dumping ground, in the hopes that I might plant something there. It's a very shallow mound, hardly visible anymore, probably used last in the post war period. My son likes to dig up "fossils and artifacts" there, because you almost always find something; pottery, scrap metal, etc. So yesterday he was happily digging again, until he found something and came to me asking "dad, what's this?" And I was like Oh no, that does not look good. It was very clearly a facial bone; the eye socket is something you recognize immediately. I asked where he had found it and started digging around the area. And of course more bones surfaced, and a rusty old knife! Luckily I managed to identify the bones to a degree: parts of a swine and some avian bones. Our house resides on old farmland, so this is to be expected. But that facial bone remained to be identified. I had to resort to the internet to solve this, and solve it I did. It was part of a lambs skull. What a relief!

Also a couple of my pumpkins from seeds harvested from last years pumpkins are starting to pop through, Potatoes coming up as well. Onions were doing great from day one. I just put some miracle grow plant food on the pumpkins and glads. Happy with how things are going so far.

Those are some fine looking pears I have to say, and from such a relatively small plant - that thing is busy! It wears a lot of fruit one year (if blossom does not freeze that is) and the following year very few. If pruned right they should wear well pretty much every year but am still working on the pruning thing .
This is the tree as a whole as it looks right now.

Do your deadheading!
I have to get the drive belt back onto my riding mower, and I am not sure how to elevate it to do so. May have to remove the cutting deck, which is not really what I wanted to be doing right now but yay wutevs. Ideally I could lift it up on blocks, but I'm not sure I can push it up on blocks myself - the vibrant physical specimen is no longer. Might give it a shot, need to do an oil change anyways so one way or the other I'll figure it out I guess.
Anyone have a nice homemade weedkiller recipe? Salt/vinegar/soap seem to be likely candidates. Boiling water isn't a bad idea, but I would prefer something I could spray.
