The size of ice pebbles... o.O Thunderstorms are completely unpredictable. Good thing you didnt lose all your plants, Beetle!. I found som aphids today from my greenhouse. Physalis seems to be the main subject but paprika got its share and oddly the strawberries I grow in tye greenhouse. Ive never seen aphids on strawberries though. I squished them all with my fingers, little buggers. If aphids are troubling your plants you can order ladybug larvae, they'll eat them away like nothing. Works wonders, really. Also here is my first funky (edible) pumpkin!

My raspberries are just tremendous this year. They seem to like hot and dry weather from my yearly observations. I might have enough to do a batch of raspberry wine by themselves. The last two years I have combined pears and raspberries for wine. I also think the big pruning job i did on them last fall has helped a fair bit. The pear tree also has a bumper crop of fruit as well. I usually have to compost about 9/10ths of the pears that are grown.
Tomato plants are doing so so. Potatoes plants look great, I am tempted to dig up one hill to see what the actual potatoes look like but I bet wait until August at the earliest.

Wild strawberries are ripening in my garden A pretty pink rose that gets its branches killed every winter but nevertheless manages to flower every year.

Ah, whats better than harvesting some Chili on a classical hot summer day. My first Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Yellow this year, this is 5 times hotter than the hottest Habaneros, but its also one of the tastiest chilis I know. The taste is extremely fruity and unlike any other fruit.

Here's some pics of funny things from my garden: An old car tyre serves as flower pot, very handy. Poppy "Danish Flag" and "Black Dragon", although the dragon should be double flowered but bc they are second or third generation black dragons mixed with other cultivars, they have lost the double petals. THe poppy in the second picture is probably a mix between The Giant and Black Dragon. While I like the original variants, I'm simply adore to see what the next/third generation looks like. A rain water well; the water comes from roof drains in a 1000l tank that we buried underground, extremely handy! Last but not least, a little peek inside my greenhouse.

This week the old fence around my garden will be torn down and preperations will be made for the new fence which will be place the 28th of this month. Once that is all done I can finally start scaping my garden Still debating about the fruit trees I want to have. Cherry and pear are set, just not the kind.

Those ones are just great. - Great idea for a large rain water gathering tank. - The green house is packed! Lower right, orange flowers, is that a pumpkin or zucchinbi? - Tire planter image, to the right of the planter in the back ground , is that the leg killer trailer?

I find cherries very frustrating, I do have a wonderful cherry tree but the birds love them and eat them before they even turn red. Haven't had a cherry harvest in three years. If you have a lot of birds - especially blackbirds- I do not recommend cherry. My favorite tree is the good old apple tree, but its a special one, the apples ripen in early winter. The last couple years I picked them during snow fall! And they taste absolutely incredible.

It's a pumpkin, although it just makes a lot of flowers but no pumpkins. Maybe I haven't fertilised it enough? I noticed that I've used a wrong kind of fertiliser to my physalis (cape gooseberries?) bc it keeps growing lots of giant leaves and very little flowers, too much nitrogen based fertiliser. I have a few tomatoes ripening, I'm really glad about it and cucumbers are doing great. Peas are going great as well, I love to eat the peapods whole, so crunchy, juicy and sweet! That's the trailer alright, all innocent looking now.

According to my experience the first batch of flowers of pumpkins never bear fruits, for example this year all my pumpkins -despite excellent weather- didn't start to produce fruits until recently, despite them bearing wonderful flowers since late spring! The first couple flowers simply fell off, the next batch of flowers produced small pumpkins that rotted away for no reason, now finally the plant is growing big nice pumpkins super fast. Its the same story every year. *shrugs* I think those plants need to grow to a certain size until they can produce proper pumpkins, but at the same time they are kind of overeager. Or have an early puberty.

I'll keep an eye on it and not lose hope then Thanks for the tip! Edit: Just came to my mind that a friend told me that they eat dried? pumpkin flowers in spain. He said they taste like pumpkins but stronger, I'm kinda tempted to try.

My snails love them though, so if you are a snail chances are good you'll find them very tasty.

Some slugs and some kind of small bugs, not aphids but small like that. I refuse to use pesticides, I guess I need to find some king of good organic thing. If mites are the problem, you have a couple organic options. 1) Ladybugs. They are phenomenal mite destroyers, will also kill aphids and other pests. 2) Neem oil. Prepare a dilution, and spray. Neem oil will wash off of fruits and veggies, but I would not use it on any berries. If you were indoors, I would recommend pyrethrins, but that is a different application Edit: of course Beetle ninja'd me. That's what I get for responding to the first page

Anyone know anything about moss? I got a mini one for my birthday. By moss garden I mean cupped stone hand statue (a small one, I can handle the hand) with moss the plant guy had to run into the forest to get since the plant place apparently doesn't stock moss or moss seeds. Or more traditional miniature moss gardens. Very thoughtful but I don't have high hopes for it's longterm survivability. Do they like a particular kind of soil? How much soil? How much sun? How much water? How do they feel about water? I tried googling this but there doesn't seem to be a super reliable moss authority.

I don't know a lot about moss but I belive it likes it really moist and humid. Most of the mosses in houses I have seen have been in aquariums with things like salamanader and such where it can stay moist and humid. A small path of moss I would not have much hope for long term but a fair bit of water would be my guess (and I don;t know if moss is bothered by tap water or not.)

Man, today I have learned an important gardening lesson: never completely trust the labels on the plants you are growing. I've been growing some Suave Habanero chili peppers, those are very special peppers that taste like the hottest Habaneros but have zero hotness, hence their name. Visually they're indistinguishable from normal very hot Habaneros. Well, today I harvested some of them and tried one, took a big healthy bite and.....couple seconds later my eyes nearly popped out, those were level 8-9 hot for sure! Holy fuck, got one hell of a hiccup. Seems like they mixed up the labels on some of the plants.

I was cleaning my personal folder and found this file tacked away. I have no idea where it is from, but it made me laugh:
The real meaning of plant catalog terminology:
"A favorite of birds" means to avoid planting near cars, sidewalks, or clotheslines.
"Grows more beautiful each year" means "Looks like roadkill for the foreseeable future."
"Zone 5 with protection" is a variation on the expression "Russian roulette."
"May require support" means your daughter's engineering degree will finally pay off.
"Moisture-loving" plants are ideal for landscaping all your bogs and swamps.
"Carefree" refers more to the plant's attitude than to your workload.
"Vigorous" is code word for "has a Napoleonic compulsion to take over the world."
"Grandma's Favorite" -- until the old lady discovered free-flowering, disease-resistant hybrids.
