I have been on vacation the last couple of weeks and almost all of my pears dropped during that time thus no pear wine this year. I will have to just go with raspberry wine this year.

It's now Autumn in the UK and I've been preparing my plants for winter. I have four young rose bushes which are currently still in bloom so I have been busy pruning them, adding support stakes and making sure they are securely tied to them. As three of them are exposed I have also placed a fabric windbreak behind them. The Lavender plants are ok and the mint and heather are thriving. I've just received 200 Spring bulbs (100 Daffodils and 100 Snowdrops) which now have to be planted for next year. I can already see the display in my head. I'm also thinking of ordering some Hyacinth and Allium bulbs.
Slugs/Snails
Anyone bothered by slugs should keep their used eggshells, dry them out and crush them into small pieces, the sharp edges of the broken shell irritate slug/snail bodies. Make sure the shell perimeter barrier is thick enough to deter the pests, if it's too thin/narrow they will push on through. Grit and Coffee grounds are also effective, anything small and sharp/abrasive . Egg shells have the bonus of containing nutrients/minerals, so when they eventually break down they fertilize and improve your soil. Beer traps can also be used, dig a small hole place a cup or jar in the hole and fill it with beer. The beer will attract the pests and they will then drown in the beer.
BTW make sure the egg shells are "clean" e.g. no flesh or white left attached to the shell otherwise bigger pests (rats, squirells) can be attracted to your plants by the free food.

I've planted my spring bulbs on Monday, watered everything in for the last time, and my garden is done for the year, save for cutting the roses and clematis down & mulching them for the winter. It is snowing, so I am glad that the bulbs finally made it. I wish they had an extra week or two, but it's out of my hands.
I am really paranoid about the peony I got with the bulb order, I should have left if for the spring shipping. But I really wanted to settle in a good true red if not next year than in two years. I have been waiting on a rokii and a Cytheria to mature and the Nippon Beaty did not bloom after I've moved it, so, yeah, I am really getting impatient to see my peony collection fully developed and in bloom within three years.
I am considering a gladioli collection, a new flox and a salvia for the spring. I think my beds and shrubs are now developed enough to support the coloured floxes, not just the white David sort. My concern is that Salvia's true blue color is erm... exaggerated on the picture in the catalogue, and I do not want it if it is purple.
Also, fingers crossed that two varieties of larkspur I seeded in the fall would sprout next spring. I am trying for more blue after the mites destroyed all my delphiniums. The new one was not infected, so... fingers crossed?
Overall, yes, this summer was dedicated to replacing the starter easy to grow white and yellow perennials with more demanding colours.
I can't wait for spring! The garden is really starting to look closer to what I am trying to accomplish for this house.

Some of the Glads I put in last year worked out well and were very nice, others not so much.
My peonies have just not recovered form a transplant about 4 years ago. They come up but only a few flowers.

They come up but only a few flowers. I had tripes on one of my gladioli batches this year and missed it till it was too late. I soaked the bulbs and treated them with sulfur, stored them in the fridge, and I am repeating the soak before planting. Serves me right for buying bulbs at Home Depot. And I could see too which batches were bad, because in the mix of three colours, two were infected, one was fine, and two other, smaller bundles were fine as well. So, I guess, I am adding tripes to my annual vigilance routine. As if red Lilly Beatles were not enough, ye gods.

Edit: my biggest Yay! This year was the first bloom on my Ural peonies - I collected the seeds for them six years ago, and now have five viable plants to eventually fill a nice "woodland" space.

Part of my problem with the glads was just where i planted them, the ones getting more sun and in deeper planter boxes did okay the ones in my short boxes grew fronds and that is it.

Yeah, I tried a few places for glads in this garden. I like the spots/soil I chose for them for the next year, but I will have to be proactive and treat bulbs before planting next spring. I want this collection and would hate it if they would not bloom.

Those suckers take so long to grow you have to get them in the ground as soon as you can but they are such nice flowers. I might just go with the safe and easy annuals next year and buy a bunch of pansies and petunias.
I used to have such a great flower garden, no more.

Heh, I has been reclaiming my lawn into the garden ever since we bought the house, a square meter at a time. I am a firm believer that since I don't keep goats, I don't need to cultivate grass....

It's nearly December and my rose bushes are only now stopping flowering. In fact I still have one or two roses here and there. I'm in western Scotland, IDK the weather seem's to be getting stranger each year. Anybody else got any unusual stuff going on were you are?
Also bee's and butterflies are under threat in the UK due to chemical use and declining wild flower habitat's like meadows, luckily I have plenty of bumblebee's visiting my plants and sometimes the odd butterfly. I also sowed a lot of wildflower seeds this year, hopefully I'll see the results next year.

So, no gardening till May....

Most of the weather systems here come in from the Atlantic and the Jet Stream (ocean currents/airflow) which comes up from the Gulf of Mexico is hugely important to the UK without it there would be an almost artic like climate akin to Norway/Iceland here in the winter. The two biggest cities in Scotland are on the same latitude as Moscow, so the Jet Stream is extremely important here.
In fact in western fringes of Britain some of the islands and western coastal area's of Scotland and places like Devon/Cornwall in England palm trees and other exotics can be grown. This is due to these warmer currents coming here in the winter, however the downside to the milder weather conditions is that it's also wetter and more overcast.
I suppose all the hurricanes and extreme weather events in the Carribean earlier this year may have something to do with the unusual/milder weather/growing condition's for this time of year as that's were most of our weather systems here originally come from.

It is time to do some sowing. Have you already started, what are you going to grow this summer. Are you going to try something new or just keep to the good reliable oldies? I am going to try again Physalis, they didn't ripen last year because the summer sucked. Cherry tomatoes, cucumber and pumpkin are on the list as well. I would love paprika and chili but they attract aphids way too much. My greenhouse is still under snow and ice, I can't even get the door open yet. Come spring, come!

I've already started growing some plants indoors, I have several baby tomato plants and the parsnip seeds I harvested 4 years ago still work, they start to grow their first tiny little leaves. Though the ground is still frozen and spring is nowhere to be seen.

Still a foot and half of snow in my back yard. Which would seem like bad news but that extra moisture in the ground will be good. I am going to have more time to properly garden this year so I will plant something other than just potatoes in my back garden plot. Haven't planned it all out yet though. My back garden gets very weed infested so I will have to try to keep right on top of it if I can.

I just started seeds yesterday. Tomatoes, peas, hollyhocks, and cerinthe. I have a dwarf cherry tree and Chinese lantern on order and am doing to see what of the plants I babied through last summer come back so I can decide what else to do in the front. The strawberries and mint are the only really happy things in the back so that's going to be where most of the work happens this year.

Which is too bad, fresh mint is awesome.

Remade my strawberry patch this weekend. I put some filter fabric on the bottom to prevent weeds to invade my patch, then placed the wooden rack and filled the space with dirt from the compost. I could have used a bit more dirt but I just wanted to get it done asap so the strawberry plants would get planted quickly. To the empty space behind, I am going to plant some blueberry and arctic raspberry ( Rubus arcticus). I will try to fetch some wild seedlings from the forest but also maybe buy some cultivated from garden shop.

I am jealous of you folks. This years maintenance is focused on the home itself - renovated master bath (almost done) and new roof (about to start). Next year, gonna shrink my mowing a little by planting a few dwarf fruit trees in the front and back, and a few blueberry bushes. Then the following year, new back deck and finally a garden box. Homeownership can be expensive upfront, but I plan on staying a while and this home is going to feed me eventually

We did the roof, a patio, and some of the windows already. There's plenty more to go on the house, too, but the yard is cheaper and really needs some love.
My dwarf cherry is finally taking off, and I have three kinds of berries, peas, and spinach in the ground. Is also put in a hibiscus and a couple of Persian Shields for color.
And tomatoes. I forgot the tomatoes in my list.

Finally planted a garden
Two grape tomato plants. One basil, one thai basil, one thyme, one oregano, one sage, one mint, one banana pepper, and one poblano pepper. The last two are mainly an experiment, as I don't like spicy foods. Most of anything I get from those will likely go to my brothers.
The mint is staying in a pot on the porch, as I hear it can be incredibly invasive.

We're still harvesting huge, yummy and heavy avocados (the Fuerte type) but I am nervous as we might be getting frost tonight...not sure whether to dash out and save the many that are left or risk it. Also our passionfruit vines and mango trees will probably be damaged by the frost
