I was going to buy it after I was finished with Divinity Trilogy but then I saw that it was bashed by professional reviewers. And players' opinion are also very mixed. So is there anyone here who gave it a try? I need to know if it's really as bad as they say.

Here's my review I posted on gameinformer. www.gameinformer.com/blogs/members/b/mzchanandlerbong_blog/archive/2016/08/13/the-technomancer-spiders-studio-attempt-at-a-space-rpg.aspxMars is a planet full of colonies in the distant bleak future. Everyone's last name is after their occupation, much like our ancestors in olden times. This latest game by Spiders follows a technomancer, called Zachariah Mancer. Technomancers use electric energy in combat and have their own culture. The game starts by Zachariah being taken to an old dome by his mentor, Sean, to initiate in a ritual that'll pledge Zachariah to the Technomancer's most holy cause....to finding Earth again. Zachariah is also a soldier in the colonial army, recently promoted to Lieutenant. The story itself is interesting, but it suffers from the horrific combat. There are 3 stances Zachariah can use, Warrior (staff,) Rogue (short range gun and knife,) or Guardian (sword and shield.) Zachariah can electrify his weapons to give extra damage. The game has a progression system where you can earn more points to unlock skill trees for each of these stances, as well as Tecnomancer abilities. Enemies hit hard, and so you have to know when to roll (Rogue,) back up (Guardian,) or leap (Warrior,) away. In all honesty, I found the Warrior stance to be most useful, especially leaping away from frustrating foes. I hardly ever used anything other than a staff to fight. The combat makes me wonder if Spiders was going for Dark Souls-like difficulty, since rolling away and frustrating enemies seem to be the main grind. However, if I leaped far enough, the enemy would conveniently forget about me, making the challenge not difficult at all. Once Zachariah makes a few friends, he is betrayed by Viktor, leader of the ASC (a terrorist group.) He is framed as a traitor to the army and needs to flee his home colonial outpost. His companions, Scott, Niesha, and Amelia help him escape to a free trading post called Noctis, which seems to be a comfy temporary home. Now, here comes the most annoying part of The Technomancer. NPCs give you missions, often to go retrieve things or talk to someone about their loyalties, and they are often in the city you just left. Patrols are everywhere, meaning every time you come back to do a mission, you have to fight the same group of soldiers over and over again. They annoyed me so much that I just leaped away from them as often as I could, and avoided confrontation so that I could do the interesting missions. You would be surprised how many times you have to go back to Ophir, Zachariah's home, considering he's a wanted man. Crafting is an interesting side benefit of this game, and you can craft upgrades for armor and weapons for you and your companions. Your companions have loyalty quests, and once you talk to them about it, you have to take them with you until you finish that mission, so be prepared if you don't like Amelia or Phobos, they'll stick around until they make sure you do what you promised. A few companions will be interested in romantic relationships as well. Choices have consequences resulting in good karma or bad karma, making The Technomancer something that ultimately scratched my Mass Effect itch, albeit only slightly, as I wished for Mass Effect's much more user friendly combat throughout much of this game. The missions can be fun to see who's loyalty lies where, or they can be frustrating (like looking forever for a picture on the wall that someone has written a message on. I couldn't find it for the longest time!) Merchants never sell anything new, so you better memorize who has the good stuff and where, or else you may never upgrade. As for the main villain, Viktor, I never know what he truly wants from me until the end of the game. The ultimate ending choice is also interesting, but relieving because you don't have to suffer through any more bad combat. The voice acting is another thing where the Technomancer fails. I'm sure Spiders couldn't afford the big names in video game voice-overs, but I'm sure they could have hired people who have had acting lessons. The music definitely has that Commander Shepard-feel some of the time, but the music is repetitive, and changes instantly, should you leap away from foes, like I did. A lot. Ultimately, I could see the Technomancer being successful back in Mass Effect's day, as Spiders studio haven't quite learned everything there is to know about current generation games. Smoother combat. better voice acting, and less fetch quests would have made this game much more enjoyable for me. If you like clunky combat, an interesting setting, mediocre voice acting and consequences for choices, you'll like the Technomancer. If you enjoyed Spiders studio previous game, Mars: War logs, then I dare say you'll like the Technomancer. If you're looking for a Mass Effect clone, you'll be disappointed in the Technomancer. If you're looking for a great sic-fi game, you'll be disappointed in the Technomancer. REVIEW SCORE: 6 out of 10

Obliviousmiss, thank you very much for your exhaustive answer! I think I'll pass for now. I can easily overlook voice acting and combat system issues but the combo backtracking+systematic respawn.. oh please god.. no! It's a thing that I can tolerate only if the game is really worth it.

Tried it out, the combat felt really clunky and awkward to me, but maybe I'm just spoiled by much smoother experiences.
The story starts with an interesting premise but the bad voice acting and writing don't really take advantage of the setting or do much that's very interesting. As I understand, the main story just kind of ends abruptly.
To quote Yahtzee "They failed to find the interesting story in lightning wizards from Mars!"

I just started this and, yes, I did buy it on sale. I had some difficulty with the initial training portion since I couldn't identify the icon for the control I was supposed to use for locking on a target (as a result, the test got stuck in limbo-ville). I remapped the control and it worked fine. The thing that strikes me right off the hop is the herky jerky walking/running animations. Everyone looks like marionettes with sticks up their butts.
I'm playing on easy mode so hopefully I won't suck too bad at the combat. With all the jumping around and different styles, it kinds of reminds me of Jade Empire.

This game is turning out to be longer than I expected. I'm still not finished with Ch. 1. I keep expecting the next main quest to lead to the sudden but inevitable betrayal but it hasn't happened yet.
I also get turned around almost every time I go anywhere because every level of Ophir is a rat's maze.

Woo, I finally made it to Noctis! Did a few quests there, now I have approx. 500 to do back in Ophir. Hoping I got them all so I only have to go back once. Hmmm....maybe I should talk to the rest of the would-be companions first.

I actually bought it a couple weeks ago for a pretty good price, but honestly i got really bored after a while and havent played it since. I was thinking of returning it, but im gonna give it another try and play it again when i have the time. I've also just bought dragons dogma, its a bit of an older game but im liking it so far. If you like fantasy rpgs like skyrim, dark souls etc and haven't played it yet, I recommend checking it out.

Still doing stuff for Noctis. Ran into a trio of unknowns who attacked me for no reason. Turns out, I needed to steal something from them which is why they were supposed to attack, but they did so before I got to that part of the quest. There are quite a few disconnects like this in the side-quests. The journal/map say "go to spot A to talk to person/s B" but there's nothing to tell me (the player) why I'm doing it or how I would even know to do it without the markers. Still, it's not that bad of a game. I've got pretty much every faction mad at me, either hostile or suspicious. Somehow turned my rep with Vory to "good" after booting out all their mobsters from Noctis and foiling the wind turbine thieves. Currently back in Ophir running errands for everyone under the sun.

heh. sounds fun. How did you get most every faction mad at you?
Abundance is hostile because plot. The Vory were suspicious but somehow my rep with them changed to good even though I didn't help them at all (just intimidated them into leaving Noctis rather than kill them). The free mutants are suspicious, but I haven't been able to do Phobos' quest yet, even though he asked about it. The opposition is hostile/suspicious (don't remember which) because I didn't help them either and killed Bulgakov. Noctis rep is good. Army rep is also good (not sure why - maybe because I didn't reignite hostilities btw. Abundance and Aurora?) but it was suspicious/hostile at the end of Ch. 1. All companion reps are good except for Neisha and Andrew who are at friendly.
Zach is basically a goody-two shoes. He's also torn between being afraid of and crushing on Amelia.

It was so tempting to ally with the Vory. But in the end I chose the Technomancers and the Mutants as my closest allies. And Andrew was bae. I don't normally go for the homosexual romance option but the girls drove me nuts.

I've got everyone except the Vory on board as allies. Anton is a turd.
I've stuck with Amelia but I really like the dynamic between Zach and Andrew, so after I finish I might go back mid-game and pick him instead. Neisha is just meh.

Anyone have trouble with achievements popping on Steam? I just counted my completed side quests and it's over 30, yet the "Obliging - Finish 20 secondary quests" doesn't show completed. Maybe it only activates once you finish the game?
Looks like the level cap is 36 (I'm currently level 35) so I should just squeak in with the full rogue skill tree. I was annoyed that it requires all the upgrades to be picked too.
Edit: So, I made it to the final boss, which is a giant worm. That I have to fight by myself. Really game? Really like the base though - reminds me the second stargate base in SG1. So, assuming I can manage to squish the giant worm, I should finish up tomorrow. Giving up for now, plus it's bed time anyway.

Haven't tested it yet. Though it looks like every other game developed by Spiders, huge potential, but lacking in execution. Might pick it up on sale though after reading some of the things written here. The world building they do is pretty much always spot on, just the gameplay that suffers.

Finished the game. I liked it pretty well, annoying combat notwithstanding. I did like being a super agile rogue freak of destruction though.
For my end choice I picked
reveal what happened to Earth and live in Noctis Some DA/ME relevance: Fryda Wolff (voice of Sara Ryder in MEA) did the voice for Bulgakov (Act 1 NPC) and Sumalee Montano (American-voice fem Inquisitor in DAI) was Eliza Major (NPC thru-out the game).
Got a pretty good epilogue, I think, but that's usually what happens when you play a goody-two shoes.
Will most likely play again (to romance Andrew if nothing else) but I gotta get my ME fix now - only 2 months till Andromeda!

This seems to be the thread dedicated to The Technomancer, so I post here.
The Technomancer is a fairly good action/party-RPG. Backtracking and respawning enemies are slightly annoying, but nothing too bad.
The combat is challenging, but fun (easier, than Dark Souls, and more responsive and diverse, than TW3). The avatar is more or less fixed - it's always Zachariah Mancer/Rogue, but the appearance is customizable. 4 skill trees, 3 weapon types/stances, 6 non-combat skills. Choices and side quest affect the ending (and it's possible to miss a certain ally in Chapter 3, if they were killed/arrested in Chapter 1; makes me appreciate BW backup characters more). Usually there are several ways to achieve quest objectives. The world is semi-open, similar to Bound by Flame, The Witcher 1-2 and Mars: War Logs (prequel).
I guess, it's funny, but I got that Sean is the Sean from Mars: War Logs only mid-game, the name and the hair style seemed quite common and his personality changed somehow.

Mars War Logs... either the prequel or sequel to this ... but the game that came before this one at least it seemed more fluid in all aspects ... but again that is probably just me.

The events of MWL take place somewhere during the second part of the first chapter of The Technomancer. Somehow both outcomes of MWL are presented (the opposition forces took Greenhope, but the Dowser got killed). Can't say if MWL is more fluid, but there was less backtracking (partly, because each chapter took place in different region) and stealth was much more effective.

So is the consensus to try it with a sale? I've been on the fence about getting it.
