Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson expressed confidence in BioWare during an earnings call yesterday, and said that the decision to push back its new, as-yet-unannounced project into the next fiscal year was not a reflection of the relatively cool response to Mass Effect: Andromeda. Today, however, Kotaku reported that developer BioWare Montreal is being transitioned to a "support studio," with a number of its employees moving to the Jade Raymond-led EA Motive, while the Mass Effect series itself has been put "on hiatus." To be clear, this does not mean layoffs, but rather a reallocation of resources. EA Motive is working on Star Wars Battlefront 2, obviously a major project, while BioWare Montreal's reduced responsibilities—Kotaku said it will "help support" the development of games at other EA studios, including the big mystery game at BioWare Edmonton, and also continue to patch and support Mass Effect: Andromeda—means that it simply doesn't need as many staffers as it did when it was making its own triple-A game. "Our teams at BioWare and across EA put in tremendous effort bringing Mass Effect Andromeda to players around the world. Even as BioWare continues to focus on the Mass Effect Andromeda community and live service, we are constantly looking at how we’re prepared for the next experiences we will create," BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy said in a statement. "The teams in EA Worldwide Studios are packed with talent, and more than ever, we are driving collaboration between studios on key projects. With our BioWare and Motive teams sharing studio space in Montreal, we have BioWare team members joining Motive projects that are underway. We’re also ramping up teams on other BioWare projects in development. There will be much more to come from BioWare in the years ahead." It's obviously not a happy development, but it's not nearly as catastrophic as it might appear at first glance, either. In a way, it's something of a return to the studio's roots: BioWare Montreal was originally founded in 2009 to help out with the development of Mass Effect 2, and Andromeda was its first solo act. Nor does it mark the end of Mass Effect, which despite the Andromeda stumble remains one of EA's top-tier series, and will obviously be back someday. If anything, it seems like a perfectly reasonable move: Employees go where they're needed, Star Wars moves front-and-center, Mass Effect is allowed to fade into memory for a while—sometimes that's a good thing—and nobody ends up out of work. ------ What does this mean?

It's not unusual for huge publishers like EA to move people to projects where they are needed.
Ongoing support + DLC development does not require the size of staff that full game development needs. So - they shift resources around.
Don't know what to make of the "hiatus" comment. It might mean they are going to spend some time analyzing the fallout from MEA's release to try to get a better plan with which to go forward.
My expectation is that they will continue to support MEA.

Sounds like EA is pissed at the Montreal studio for MEA's reception and is " reallocating resources " aka = quietly firing people. ..but it says they are moving their personnel around to work on other games that have closer release dates. My opinion is Mass Effect should go back to the Vancouver studio where it belongs.

I guess the same thing that happened to DAI will probably happen here, we see it already, minimal support, little to no communication, probably very few or no DLC at all and then that's it, game over.

Couple of things: First, the Montreal studio actually shares a building with Motive, it's not exactly a shocker that they'd lend a hand. Second: Based on a story from Kotaku, which is about as reliable as a chocolate teapot.
Could be true, but based on the source, I'm not too concerned.

This sounds about right - I mentioned this possibility a couple of times in the past. There was no way EA was going to keep investing at the level it did in MEA given the results Montreal put out, notwithstanding being given every chance to succeed.
As a practical matter, I don't think it will affect this game much - a smaller team is used for support/dlc. MEA was never going to get ME3-level support, but this doesn't mean it'll get nothing. It does mean, however, that MEA2 won't happen for a long time, if at all, and they're probably fundamentally rethinking the direction they want to take the IP.

What does it mean?
Well it means first off getting two extra unplanned DLCs because of amazing revenue throughput is not going to happen.
It also means you shouldn't expect more than two DLCs for SP, if Montreal was smart they planned the Quariark ahead of time and so the assets are already ready, but given the state of this game and the state and context of words of the people in charge of this game, I simply have many many doubts.
Best case Butterflies and Rainbows scenario: Quariark MP consisting of three maps, and two, possibly three examples of each new race as kits with 6 new powers and recycled stuff from what we now have, and one enemy faction aka Cerberus, and "Endgame" versions of the Nexus race chars and weapons, ala Krogan Ninja using Drack's armor with a different head + drack melee uniques as "powers", etc etc
Realistic scenario: Probably three or four new maps total made from rescaled SP assets with probably 8 total new kits using various reworked sp assets and of course platinum difficulty.

I also hope Billy is not in charge of patches for multiplayer. Them jetpacks were really getting out of hand.

I don't think this means too much other than don't expect ME:5 anytime soon. There will still be people maintaining multiplayer for the moment. I think a smaller team with more personal investment in the game could work well. In fact if multiplayer sells packs, this may be good for it as there will be no rush to move the remaining devs off onto the next major version.

I'm not exactly against reinvesting those resources but asking the studio employees about it just seems cruel. Also, I doubt they know much right now. This is a c-suite/board-level decision. And if they were told anything, it was probably a scripted message with a friendly reminder about the company's media policy.
