Thanks. Are there countries where people have that commonly in their homes? The USA, China, Japan, South America and others. In hot areas, if people can afford air conditioning, they install it. Europe has a mild climate, so it's uncommon there. sourceI dunno about mild, Iceland has mild summers but our summers here in Austria often let temperatures raise above 35C° / 95F for several weeks, during the summers we are not far off of places like Arizona or Australia. I had an AC once but I stopped using it pretty quickly because it made me feel bad.....just like the AC's ins planes, they just wreak havoc on me and make me feel absolutely terrible. Thats also the reason why I never use the AC in cars, even when I am getting baked in a vehicle stuck in a traffic jam in summer. Fans rule though, especially at night when they blow mosquitoes away from you.

Air conditioning. Thanks. Are there countries where people have that commonly in their homes? You guys don't use air conditioners in europe? So... there are no hot days? Ever? Otherwise you would need to deal with the heat.

Thanks. Are there countries where people have that commonly in their homes? You guys don't use air conditioners in europe? So... there are no hot days? Ever? Otherwise you would need to deal with the heat. Unfortunately for people like me, who hate anything beyond 25°C, air conditioning in private residences is very rare here in Germany. You have it in many public buildings, in almost all foodstores and in almost every car, but neither in most workplaces nor in most houses or apartments where people live. Most people are comfortable up to 30°C, and summers where temperatures are higher for more than a few days at a time used to be rare. Temperatures have become more extreme, though, to the point that I'm actually afraid of the summer every year ever since that damnable summer of 2003 where it was 35° or higher for seven weeks in a row. It's also an increasing problem in workplaces. I suspect air conditioning will become more common, but as of now it's not, and things are slow to change since it's way more expensive to add air conditioning to an existing house than to include it when the house is planned. Mostly, we make do with fans. I have a big one in my apartment and a small one in my workplace. Right now it's -10°C though. I love it. Most people hate it.

There are weird traffic lights in Austria. Before the green switches to yellow, the green flashes a few times. Then it turns yellow, then red. So basically, there is an announcement about the announcing of red lights. There's no turning right at a red traffic light either (although the concept is being looked into atm). Smoking restrictions are not nearly as severe as in other European countries. Even in restaurants, the so-called separated smoking area sometimes is not separated at all, meaning you shouldn't be surprised when you come back from dinner smelling like an ashtray. Some establishments even may choose to allow smoking in all areas. Also, you need to bag your own groceries, no one will do that for you. Plastic bags will cost you a few cents, so many people bring their own shopping bag. In general, plastic packaging materials are finally declining, and are being slowly replaced by biodegradable materials. Legal drinking age for beverages like beer and wine is 16. It's quite rare to have AC at home. In malls, offices, restaurants, hotels etc. you can encounter them frequently, but I personally know exactly one family with AC in their living room and bedrooms. Well, I tried to stick to facts rather than observations, but I just can't leave out this one: waiters - especially in old Viennese coffee houses - are quite rude. Well, rude is not the right term actually. They are polite enough, and at the same time they have the inherent talent to let you know that you with your strange orders are a mere nuissance to their existence relaxed day at work. It's part of their charm, I'm told. My definition of charming might differ, as I do not find that charming at all. No baggers for your groceries?!? What is this preposterous nonsense?!? And here I thought Austria was a nice place to live! Still, I think having an additional charge for plastic groceries is a great idea. I get a handful of plastic bags every so often since they're useful for disposing of used cat litter, but otherwise, I keep a couple of hemp bags that actually get me a ten cent discount per item that fills the bag at my local organic grocery. As for serving staff, this is one of those times where I prefer how we Americans (and Canadians) do it - I don't mind conversing with the server and having them come up to you every 5-10 minutes or so. I prefer it in fact.

Otherwise you would need to deal with the heat. Northern Italy is cool in May-June as I remember. Northern Europe can be quite cold at some nights. They need the super mega awesome General air conditioner tho! Although these new ones work well too

I raise you the British Museum, which is dedicated to being "an active crime scene", in the immortal words of John Oliver. You guys don't use air conditioners in europe? So... there are no hot days? Ever? Otherwise you would need to deal with the heat. When it's hot, we open a window. On the cutting edge, are we. No baggers for your groceries?!? What is this preposterous nonsense?!? And here I thought Austria was a nice place to live! No baggers here either in the UK. The cashier may sometimes lend a hand, if there isn't a queue behind you or if the mood strikes them, but mostly it's DIY. That's a bit of a taboo here. Brits really don't like to be bothered when they're eating and we get super-uncomfortable if the waiting staff continuously approach or try to engage us in conversation. Politeness from our waiters is fine, but if they're too friendly, that makes us very suspicious.

Technically i do not live in Europe ( Swiss ) but uh my house is fully air conditioned it can be quite hot over here and as someone else already said 35 degrees celsius or even higher for weeks i call that hot days. And since i'm not a fan of hot weather i use my AC ... so comfortable i'm more of a winter person i love the snow.

But I think with the hot summers here in Vienna, the number of ACs will continously grow here. I'm also no summer person at all, and I have to flee the hot city regularly in order not to go insane.

I do not live in the city myself but it can be even hotter there ( 40+ degrees celsius ) so i do not envy you and i can imagine that you have to flee the city regularly.

Yes you do, just not in the EU, and even that's a technicality since you're completely surrounded by EU countries. BTW, here we say that the only reason Switzerland isn't in the EU is that your banks wanted Switzerland to continue to be a tax haven for foreign crooks.

Couldn't you just shoot them when they come to visit? You'd do the world a great service. Amongst industrialized nations, Switzerland has one of the highest rates of gun ownership, but has nearly half the gun-related deaths the United States has. Switzerland has one of the lowest crime rates of all industrialized countries. In 2010, there were only 0.5 gun murders per 100,000 compared to 5 per 100,000 in the U.S.
Well you heard correctly it was in my facts about my country but to shoot those crooks our rates of lowest crime rates would go sky high so i don't think that i could convince my countrymen to shoot those crooks.

Yes you 're right we are! completely surrounded by other European countries High five for being totally surrounded by European countries and having no access to the sea! Switzerland has more than 1,500 lakes, and one is never more than 10 miles (16 km) from a lake within the country’s borders.I'll high five you. But as you can read we have 1500 lakes do you know how many lakes Austria has also quite a few i guess so we're fine right. And i don't have to drive that far to see an actual sea.

Jeremy Clarkson joked in an episode of Top Gear that he once got pulled over by the cops in Switzerland, who were more concerned that he was going slightly over the speed limit, than having an assault rifle in the passenger seat. (Actually the Swiss Police seem to be really good at catching people speeding, based on the several other times he was stopped by them during race challenges across Europe)

This lake was two times the size of Luxembourg and it's dying, just because politicians and people decided we should cultivate the hell out of the rivers that pour into it. Now they complain why it's happening! Too much population, not enough water. Now it may even cause respiratory problems for some people.

Conversely, come to several American states, and you're like to see a drunk driving redneck shooting an assault rifle out of his car (ok, sort of hyperbole, but I've seen both happen before, just not at once) figure the cop trying to pull them over wants to race, and they gun it. The North reaaaaaally wasn't as hard on the South after the Civil War as they should have been.
