The Hollywood star - who plays the quintessential detective in the hit BBC series - is said to have leaped to the rescue of a Deliveroo rider who was being beaten up by a group of four, it emerged on Friday night.
The Sun reports Cumberbatch was in an Uber vehicle on Marylebone High Street in central London with his wife, Sophie Hunter, when they saw the cyclist being hit over the head with a bottle.
The driver of the car, Manuel Dias, told the newspaper: 'Benedict was courageous, brave and selfless. If he hadn't stepped in the cyclist could have been seriously injured.
'Here was Sherlock Holmes fighting off four attackers just round the corner from Baker Street.
'He stood there instructing them in the street, shouting, "Leave him alone".'
The driver said he grabbed one of the men and Benedict got hold of another and added the star knew exactly what to do.
The attackers reportedly tried to punch the actor, who managed to push them away. The driver says they fled when they recognised who he was.
After the frenzy was over, Benedict asked the cyclist how he was and when he replied that he was okay, the actor embraced him
According to The Sun, the actor said: 'I did it out of, well, I had to, you know?'

'Beloved' science teacher faces jail after being charged with animal cruelty for feeding a LIVE PUPPY to a snapping turtle in front of his classBy Associated Press and Daniel Roth | Updated: 22:52 EDT, 1 June 2018 - Preston Junior High School science teacher Robert Crosland was charged Friday and faces up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine if convicted - Superintendent for Preston schools, Marc Gee, told the Idaho Statesman that he heard about the charges and still reviewing the situation - The school is in rural Preston, where the 2004 teen cult classic film 'Napoleon Dynamite' was set - Several parents came forward to say Crosland fed the puppy to the turtle on March 7 after school An Idaho teacher accused of feeding a sick puppy to a snapping turtle in front of several students has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty.
Preston Junior High School science teacher Robert Crosland was charged Friday.
He faces up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine if convicted.
Superintendent for Preston schools, Marc Gee, told the Idaho Statesman that he heard about the charges and still reviewing the situation.
'Once we have seen the details, we will release a statement for the district,' he said.
The school is in rural Preston, where the 2004 teen cult classic film 'Napoleon Dynamite' was set.
The Idaho attorney general's office handled the investigation after Franklin County Prosecutor Vic Pearson cited a conflict of interest. Several parents came forward to say Crosland fed the puppy to the turtle on March 7 after school.
Several weeks later, state officials seized the turtle and euthanized it as a non-native species. Individuals who want to keep snapping turtles as pets in the state must obtain a permit or face a possible misdemeanor charge.
Attempts to reach Crosland at the school Friday were not successful.
The incident has drawn national criticism against Crosland with a petition to have the educator fired circling the internet, garnering more than 185,000 signatures so far.
'Unfortunately, on March 7, [Crosland] decided to feed one of those creatures - a snapping turtle to be exact - a puppy,' the petition reads. 'Please join in demanding that Robert Crosland be fired for this disturbing decision!'
A counter petition signed by community members, former students and current colleagues expressing support for the long-time science teacher has accumulated roughly 3,700 signature, the Statesman reported.
Preston School Board Chairwoman Joy Christensen said that the district will wait for criminal proceedings to conclude before making a decision regarding Crosland's future.

Documentary looks to tell the remarkable story of Marine special operator James Capers Jr.By COREY DICKSTEIN | STARS AND STRIPES Published: June 2, 2018WASHINGTON — No matter what hell was enveloping James Capers Jr. and his Force Reconnaissance Marines, when it was time to escape a melee he was the last man on the ground — sometimes holding off enemy attackers alone before boarding a helicopter to safety. “If I was going to die there in Vietnam, I was going to die fighting,” said Capers, a retired major whose 22 years in the Corps would earn him fame as a revered and innovative fighter and one of the Marines’ first black special operators. “That was just the way we fought. You go out fighting. You kill as many enemy as you could — and that would mean that they could not further fight your guys or other American troops.” It was April 1967, after three days of patrolling behind enemy lines in search of a reported North Vietnamese encampment near the village of Phu Loc just north of Hue city, when Capers’ nine-man Third Force Recon Team — known as Team Broadminded — found itself in the crosshairs of an entire NVA regiment. The fighting was as intense as any he had seen in nearly a year in Vietnam spent conducting dozens of commando raids in northern South Vietnam, Capers recalled. With two broken legs and peppered with shrapnel from the blast of a Claymore mine, Capers battled a mental haze brought on by massive blood loss and a shot of morphine as he fought to free his men from the assault. With his entire team wounded and their loyal service dog, King, killed in action, Capers ordered his Marines to evacuate on a small H-34 chopper. He continued the fight — calling in strikes on “danger close” enemy positions as he fended off the attackers with his M-16. But the extraction helicopter was overloaded, and his men needed critical medical attention. Capers made the impossible decision — let the chopper take his men and King’s body away from danger while he stayed behind to face certain death. “I figured it’s better to lose one man than to lose the whole team,” Capers, 80, told Stars and Stripes in a recent telephone interview from his home near Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, N.C. “Any commander worth his salt would care for his men before his self.” But the men would not leave their leader behind. Capers — who would become the first black Marine officer nominated for the Medal of Honor for his actions that day, but would instead receive the Silver Star — was pulled aboard the chopper. After two failed attempts at liftoff, the pilots finally got the H-34 airborne, carrying the men to safety and beginning Capers’ journey toward recovery. He would later become the face of the Corps’ first recruiting campaign targeting young black men. A documentary about Capers’ life is set to be released this year, a decade-long effort spearheaded by the retired Marine in an attempt to find a sense of “self-healing,” following the deaths of his son, Gary, in 2003, and his wife of 50 years, Dottie, in 2009. Filmmakers Ashley Cusato and Erich Recker share the once-top-secret details about him and his commando team during that brutal tour in Vietnam. ‘A badass with heart’“Major Capers: The Legend of Team Broadminded,” documents the exploits that would earn Capers status in Marine Corps lore and a spot in the inaugural class of the U.S. Special Operations Command’s Commando Hall of Honor. Capers was “one of history’s most outstanding special operations team leaders,” former Marine Special Operations Command chief, retired Maj. Gen. Paul Lefebvre, said as Capers was inducted into the hall alongside 13 revered special operators in 2010. Built on never-before-seen footage of Capers and Team Broadminded in action in Vietnam, and interviews with the men he served alongside, the documentary tells the story of overcoming longshot odds through personal strength and perseverance, said Cusato, the film’s director. “How does someone like Maj. Capers, who broke through barriers, become successful in his career against all odds?” Cusato asked. “He possessed this level of perseverance, tenacity, there was a stick-to-itiveness and a faith that was a common thread every time he was up against a challenge. And he always possessed the ability to see in a positive light and a positive tone.” It’s a message that Cusato and Recker, the executive producer, aim to share with a wide audience, explaining they believe the film is more than a military or Vietnam story. Recker, a Marine veteran who has worked in film and TV for about two decades, said the filmmakers focused on more than Capers’ battlefield experience, attempting to highlight the man behind the commando legend. Capers’ heart — and his motivations — are unveiled in the documentary through the use of personal audio recordings he made in the field and sent home to his wife, Recker said. The recordings are revealing, Recker said, describing Capers as “a badass with heart.” “These are personal, very personal audio recordings from the battlefield to his wife, depicting a firsthand, humanistic account of what he’s going through,” he said. “It’s truly fascinating … and I’ll say it’s one of the better stories I’ve ever heard or been a part of in my career.” Under fire in VietnamThe stern but soft-spoken son of a sharecropper born in Jim Crow-era South Carolina, Capers would enlist in the Marines at 18 without an inkling he would spend the next two decades wearing the service’s storied uniform. One of only a few black men, Capers entered boot camp at Parris Island in 1953 – only 11 years after the service opened its ranks to blacks and seven years before it would achieve full racial desegregation – aiming to stand out among his peers. Early in his career he’d make another choice uncommon among black men of his generation, electing to go into special operations. As a Marine it meant joining Force Reconnaissance, small unit teams tasked with long-range surveillance and intelligence gathering, often taking the commandos deep behind enemy lines with little support from the larger U.S. military. By the time he arrived in Vietnam, Capers had attained the rank of staff sergeant, assigned with leading his commando team. During the tour, the Corps determined he should be an officer — giving him a rare battlefield commission to second lieutenant and placing him in command of his Third Force Recon platoon. He believes he was the Marines’ first black special operator to receive a battlefield commission. Team Broadminded would face a heavy load of combat operations. Early in its tour, in the summer of 1966, the unit would conduct amphibious assaults targeting Viet Cong units along the demilitarized zone between North and South Vietnam. Later the team would be moved to Khe Sanh, a strategic base just south of the DMZ near the Laos border, where it would patrol nearby hills and valleys daily in search of North Vietnamese high value targets to kill. By the time Capers was medically evacuated from Vietnam after the April 1967 mission in Phu Loc, he had led his team on 67 long-range reconnaissance missions, ranging from diving operations to recover fallen Marines to covert tasks personally approved by President Lyndon B. Johnson, including attempts to recover prisoners of war. Capers would leave Vietnam having earned two Bronze Star Medals with “V” device for valor, three Purple Hearts, and with more than 20 wounds. The Silver Star for his actions at Phu Loc would come 43 years later, but only after his nomination for the Medal of Honor was reviewed, declined and downgraded by the Marine Corps. Despite his injuries, which put him in a military hospital for a year and left doctors questioning whether he would walk again, Capers said it was the lifelong bonds with his teammates that left the greatest lasting impact on his life. “It’s the camaraderie,” he said when asked about his most important memories of serving. “No matter the circumstances, what happened out there – it’s your friends. You don’t want to let your buddies down, you don’t want to let your country down, you certainly don’t want to let your Marine Corps down.” The face of MarinesA chiseled-jawed Capers, by then a first lieutenant, stands at attention staring straight forward in his dress blue officer’s uniform in the photograph that graced national billboards and magazine pages in the 1970s. The Marines selected Capers to become the face of their service for a recruiting campaign dubbed “Ask a Marine.” The service had launched a worldwide search of its officers to find the perfect example of the “excellence of the U.S. Marine Corps,” according to Marine documents. Capers, still recovering from the wounds he suffered at Phu Loc, recalled struggling to stand upright as the photographer snapped hundreds of images. But he knew how important the recruiting campaign could be to minorities interested in serving in the Corps. “It was time for the Marine Corps and the world to see the sacrifices that African-Americans had made in different places in the world,” Capers says in the documentary. His photo would inspire a generation of minority Marines, according to the service. The number of black Marines has grown from about 4 percent during the Vietnam War to more than 10 percent in 2016, officials said. Capers would often be recognized from the campaign until his retirement in 1978. After his career in the Marines, Capers spent years working in the telecommunications industry and today helps run the nonprofit Gary Capers Foundation, aimed at helping disabled youth, named for his son, who was born blind and died of undiagnosed appendicitis at 49. Elusive Medal of HonorIn October 2010 during a ceremony at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, Capers was presented the Silver Star for his actions at Phu Loc. A team of Marines headed by now-retired Maj. Gen. James Williams had sought the Medal of Honor for Capers in 2007, backed by Capers’ congressman, Walter Jones, R-N.C. The Marine Corps determined that Capers was deserving of the Silver Star, the nation’s third highest honor for military valor. Capers never received an explanation for the lesser award. Barring a renewed effort to upgrade his medal, Capers said he must simply live with the Silver Star – an award he said he is proud to have received. “There were some that said I should not accept it,” he said. “When your country gives you something you should accept it. I was proud. When they announced my name, everybody applauded. I was so proud that day in Florida. A Marine who grew up on a sharecroppers’ farm, who had no resources, who didn’t get the benefit of a first-rate education. As an African-American I was proud at that time to rise to the top, and I felt pretty good about the whole thing.” But the Medal of Honor would mean more – it would mean recognition, not just for him, he said, but for the men who escaped, severely injured on that day in Phu Loc. And it would alleviate any concerns Capers had about whether he was given a fair shake because of the color of his skin. Capers would not be the first black or minority servicemember whose Medal of Honor considerations were overlooked based on race. In 2014, then-President Barack Obama awarded 24 past servicemembers the Medal of Honor, capping a 14-year review of potential racism in downgrading medals for service during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, primarily among black, Hispanic and Jewish troops. It is not clear whether Capers’ Silver Star was considered during the review. “I just ask that the system is fair,” Capers said, pointing out that no black Marine Corps officer has ever received the award. “Maybe I just didn’t do enough. Maybe it’s just one of those things. I just don’t know.” When he thinks about what the Medal of Honor would mean, Capers said he recalls the days-long patrols he and his men conducted around Khe Sanh, humping for miles with little or no food or water. He thinks about an operation to recover prisoners of war he never found, and the massive firefight that ensued when his commando team discovered the POW camp empty, except for an enemy ambush team. Mostly, he said, he thinks about the men he lost in Vietnam and those who returned home, like him, with permanent physical and mental scars. He said he believes receiving the nation’s top military honor would keep their memories alive and highlight the work they did. “Right now I’m back at Phu Loc,” Capers said, just before asking to end the interview. “I am on that helicopter. I am hearing my men crying. I hear them crying for their mothers. … I can still hear the rotors of the helicopters. Right, now I am hearing this Marine cry, and I am holding on to him. He’s lost a friend. He’s 19 years old, it’s my job to save him.” The documentary“Major Capers: The Legend of Team Broadminded” traces retired Marine Maj. Jim Capers’ 22-year military career mostly as an officer in the revered Force Recon. The film is expected to be released this year. For information, go to www.capersthedoc.com. Edit: Added photos.

I think it would take something very specific but broad in scope. I think it'd take creativity.

Crocodile kills Ethiopian pastor during lake baptism5 June 2018Docho Eshete was conducting the ceremony for about 80 people on Sunday morning at Lake Abaya in Arba Minch town's Merkeb Tabya district.
Residents and police told BBC Amharic a crocodile leapt from the water during the baptism and attacked him.
Pastor Docho died after being bitten on his legs, back and hands.
"He baptised the first person and he passed on to another one. All of a sudden, a crocodile jumped out of the lake and grabbed the pastor," local resident Ketema Kairo told the BBC.
Despite huge efforts, fishermen and residents could not save pastor Docho, policeman Eiwnetu Kanko said.
They used fishing nets to prevent the crocodile from taking the pastor's body into the lake.
The crocodile escaped.

Yokota airmen improve gas mask with 3D printer, potentially saving Air Force $8 million or moreBy SETH ROBSON | STARS AND STRIPES Published: June 7, 2018YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — Tokyo-based airmen used a 3D printer and American ingenuity to modify a standard-issue gas mask into an aircraft oxygen system, potentially saving millions of dollars and improving aircrew safety. The idea of hooking up the M-50 joint-service, general-purpose mask to an aircraft was hatched during brainstorming sessions by airmen from Yokota’s 374th Maintenance Squadron and 374th Operations Support Squadron. “We took the mask and added some off-the-shelf parts and some 3D-printed parts and converted it into a piece of equipment that can work in an aircraft,” said Senior Master Sgt. David Siemiet, an aircrew flight equipment superintendent. Gear used now — the Aircrew Eye/Respiratory Protection System, or AERPS — is expensive, heavy and fault prone with long waits for replacement parts, said C-130 Hercules pilot Capt. Matthew Kohl. When the ubiquitous, light and cheap M-50 is connected to an oxygen system, air flows through its chemical filters to the user, whose eyes are protected by goggles, Siemiet said. To build their prototype, the airmen looked at an Army system that hooks soldiers’ masks to air blowers to overcome the stifling environment inside a battle tank. The airmen came up with a cap that blocks airflow into one side of the mask and an adaptor that allows it to attach to a hose that can be plugged into an oxygen system. The modification, which the airman call “AERPS Ultra,” uses a few standard parts and two components made on a 3D printer that aircraft materials technology craftsman Sen. Airman David Petrich bought for a few hundred dollars of his own money. It costs only about 75 cents to modify one mask, and the project has the potential to save the Air Force at least $8 million and countless man hours, according to Tech. Sgt. Eric Lundeen, another aircraft materials technology craftsman involved in the project. The M-50 weighs less than a pound, a lot less than the 40 pounds of chemical-protection gear now used by aircrew. Unlike the current system, the lighter masks don’t need a power supply that must be hooked to on-board electricity and uses expensive batteries, Petrich said. “You can wear the mask onto the plane and latch in and you are good to go,” he said. The mask modifications can be done on base without the need to pay a contractor, Siemiet added. “We can email [other] bases the information to 3D print the parts they need along with part numbers for the other components,” he said. The airmen printed a dozen parts before producing the prototype they wanted, Lundeen said. “3D printing is something new. There are only a dozen bases out there with 3D printers,” he said. The airmen plan to send their design to the Air Force Materials Technology Office, and want the service to send 3D printers to bases all over the world. “This is going to affect every pilot in the Air Force,” Lundeen said. “It gives them a lot more flexibility and mobility, increases safety and saves a ton of money.” And Kohl said the modified masks are a lot more comfortable than the old system. The masks have been approved for flight testing in Japan in July, he said.

Pensioner, 100, is battered to the ground and left with a broken neck by handbag-stealing muggersBy Dianne Apen-sadler | Updated: 11:36 EDT, 28 May 2018 - Centenarian was mugged at around 8.30am today in Normanton, Derbyshire - She was approached from behind and did not see her attacker, police said - Victim is still in hospital but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening A 100-year-old woman was left with a broken neck after being knocked to the ground by muggers who took her handbag. The centenarian had her green handbag stolen at 8.30am today near the junction of St Chad's Road and Empress Road in Normanton, Derbyshire, police said. The woman, who also suffered bruising to her face, said she was approached from behind before being knocked over. She is still in hospital but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time. Detective Sergeant Laura Kershaw said: 'The victim has been unable to give us a description of the person or persons responsible for this robbery - this is why we need your help to find who did this. 'If you were in or around the junction of Empress Road and St Chad's Road at around 8.30am - and to anyone who may have been in the area of Moore Street and Normanton Road between 8.30am and 9.15am. 'We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen anyone with a bag matching the one pictured in any suspicious circumstances. 'In particular, if you have CCTV or dash cam footage that may have picked up the footage of the offence or of the offenders carrying the bag in the nearby area. 'This is a particularly nasty incident that has targeted a very vulnerable elderly woman who was unable to defend herself. We need your help to find and stop those responsible.' The stolen green bag, which is made of fake leather and gold clasps, was found at the junction of Moore Street and Normanton Road. Anyone with any information is being asked to call 101 quoting reference 224-280518. The incident has sparked anger on social media. Vonnie Witton said: 'What is this country coming to? Absolutely disgusting.' Rhia Mclean wrote: '100 year old robbed and for what. The poor woman wouldn't have been able to fight back.' Sarah Bowley added: 'I do hope the lady makes as good a recovery as she is able. And I will start praying that there is a pit deeper than hell for the absolute scum that did this to her. Absolutely disgusting.'
Update... Man, 39, is arrested on suspicion of murder after death of 100-year-old woman whose neck was snapped after she was mugged on way to churchBy Richard Spillett | Updated: 04:17 EDT, 7 June 2018 - 100-year-old died after she was attacked in a crime which has shocked Britain - It was initially thought she would survive the attack by she died a week later - Police have now arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of murder - They are appealing for information of a Seat car as part of their investigation The suspected attacker of a 100-year-old woman who died after she was mugged on her way to church is in custody following his arrest.
Sophie Kaczan died in hospital after her neck was broken during a vicious mugging in Derby on May 28.
Mrs Kaczan, who survived the Nazi invasion of Poland before coming to Britain to start a new life after the war, was attacked in the street last week.
Derbyshire Police said today that a 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of her murder and is currently being questioned.
A Derbyshire Police spokesman said today: 'Zofija Kaczan passed away early yesterday morning.
'She suffered multiple injuries, including a broken neck, as a result of the robbery, which happened at around 8.45am on Monday, May 28, close to the junction of St Chads Road and Empress Road in Normanton.
'She had told us that she was approached from behind, knocked over and had her handbag stolen.
'A 39-year-old man, who was previously arrested on suspicion of robbing Mrs Kaczan, has now been arrested on suspicion of her murder. He remains in police custody and is being questioned.'
Detectives are appealing for information about a beige/silver Seat Leon seen in the area at the time, with the registration plate SL02 KVZ.
The spokesman added: 'We want to hear from anyone who may have information about the driver of the vehicle – or if you have CCTV or dash cam footage that shows the vehicle?'
Ms Kaczan's friend and neighbour Stacia Fitzsimmons, 55, said the mugger had in effect taken the pensioner's life.
'She would still be walking to church every morning if it wasn't for the person who has done this – he has killed her.'
Mrs Ftzsimmons added: 'It's so upsetting – she was like a mother to me. It is just awful that she has had to live out her final days like this. I just hope that the police catch whoever did this to Zofija.'
Mrs Kaczan was attacked moments after leaving her semi-detached home in the Normanton area of Derby to attend a service at the nearby St Maksymilian Kolbe Polish Church. Neighbours said she went there most days.
It is feared the mugger may have got away with as much as £1,000 as her bag – with a £900 utility bill inside – was later found dumped. Friends said she may have had the cash to pay the bill in her bag at the time.
