Were they good emotes? What do you check email on etc? Smart phones haven’t been around that long. They were ok. I hardly ever usd them. I chuckled when the wave emote fired automatically. Why was my evil sith giving a cheery wave when he arrived at a quick travel point?

Actually, smart phones have been around that long. Until about 10 years ago, I had to be on my electronic leash 24/7 … for a long time, it was just a regular cell phone or pager. Then they issued me a smart phone … which replaced the pager, the cell phone and a laptop. Also, MSFT came out with their first tablet around 2003 (+/-) … it really sucked, but that is something else that has existed probably longer than we realize.
Of course, just a few years ago, all the brave tablet/phablet/smart phone/smart watch gurus were announcing the demise of the PC … so there's that.
OBTW, being on an electronic leash permanently cured me of the need for a smart phone. Now that I don't have to be continuously connected, I'm not. I have a landline and a PC. Oh … and my watch just tells me what time it is … silently.
It's amazing what being forced into using an electronic leash will do to squelch the desire to voluntarily carry an electronic leash. Also, I have a car that is actually fun to drive, so talking on a smart phone while driving … would be annoying.
I did put the smart phone capability to good use once. A friend of mine moved. She had lived across the street from the National Cathedral in DC … which was easy to get to … and she bought/moved to a townhouse just off of 14th St NW … which could/should be easy to get to … unless. I made the mistake of getting directions from Google and got thoroughly lost. I called her up, told her where I was and she "talked me in" to her place. That was the last time I used a smart phone while driving a car. And that was over 10 years ago.

That was the last time I used a smart phone while driving a car. And that was over 10 years ago. O2 hate the XDA in 2003 nokia had the communicator phones since 1997 (I know I had one issued to me by work back then) and in 1999 several MSFT partners produced touch screen devices which were like the early rim phones for clunckyness and lacklustre performance (I had several of those devices as well over the years, hands down worst one was the storm) my personal phone from 2006 was the nokia 5800 (smallest smartphone with full touchscreen capability and note taking through handwriting capture via the hardpoint stylus) fantastic some of those early devices were, most were abysmal early tablets were often called slates and ran on wince (a cut down version of xp) the vista based ones were a lot worse (03 era) it wasn't until MSFT took a direct approach to them (thanks to the military demanding certain things) that touchscreen devices running windows started to be come useable for the majority as consumer hardware (and even then its always had the same problems of lacklustre performance due to heat dissipation issues and lack of ram or onboard storage until the surface pro range was released, and for all that they work there vastly overpriced) hell even in 08 the icrap was a bad choice for smart devices, offering less durability and performance than the rest whilst charging more and running a massive marketing campaign... iPhone 1/2 were dire the 3 was piss poor and it never really got better, even today the current iPhone xs max is almost as good as the lumia 550 (one of the worst spec'd mobiles nokia/msft ever made) and its not likely there going ot improve that much when they have the market all wrapped up in the hype train... now back on topic emotes were in me3 and dai (might have only been the SP game before the final patch, been over a year since I played either of them) and there hardly a new thing in gaming anyway, I was playing games with emotes in them back in 1998 (had a different name back then) and most games have some special function (although most Bethesda games you really have to find them through the call function list or data mining) often there not fully implemented since the call command is needed for the npc interactions (like calling and waving) to each other and devs are all children who want the ability to make sandbox Christmas card gifs from their personal work (yes this is why emotes exist, becasue people like me back in the late 80's through early 90's wanted animated gifs from games characters so we coded the functions into the games we made and emailed them to other people (oh I think we called it net-message back in the early days and each 10kb msg would take about 15 minutes to send over the phone line, if you were posh you might have had a floppy drive most folks just had cassette decks and that could take a lot longer to record and send to someone although might not have taken as long to arrive, not to mention the electronic message cost you over $15 to send whilst the courier parcel was only $5....) yeah I got in trouble a few times, one time I made the brigade's interactive network flash with emotes each time certain types of message were sent in... just my luck the div commander was in the command centre and that cunt never had a sense of humour (didnt appreciate explody things and red cross swords appearing everywhere with eg times over the top of them, wouldn't mind but the cunt stole the scripts and used it himself and claimed his command team created it.. ahh the days of being a geek..)

I would like a dance emote. Even if that is dumb and goofy. Because breaking out into the occasional ESO dance party when we're waiting for a boss to respawn is fun. (I mean, I'm usually the Khajiit pulling out the loot to play FOR the dancers, but I think a Javelin pulling out an acoustic guitar would look far sillier than a short dance emote. )

I still find one of my fondest teabagging memories to be Dragons & Donuts, letting my Templar teabag Billy Buskell during the BioWare DAIMP livestream. Soooo much laughter ensued all around, even if it was technically a bit crass to do.

I want emotes with short customizable text so your character can blurt out a short sentence for informational and 'other' purposes to be used in lieu of text chat or sending messages on PSN/Xbox.
My privacy setting are such that only friends can send me messages, so a way to quickly communicate real simple stuff in game without going into menus would be great.
See Monster Hunter World for a similar example. There they just have customizable quips that fire off when your character is doing 'X' activity (like mounting a monster or being downed). It is useful and fun.

I think they are what they were meant to be, at least from what I have seen. They're fun, funny, silly things to use every now and then, like maybe you're in a silly mood so you get your Javelin to do a silly dance or that one where the Interceptor is trying to perform "The Crane Technique" from Karate Kid (TM). Or maybe you just made an amazing kill and (YOU) are pumped, and you wan to convey that in-game. Use these things accordingly. Sparingly, but appropriately. And still some others may never use them, that's okay too.

SWTOR has a crapload of emotes and I don't think I even saw them all in 7 years. But I do use a bunch of them, mostly for light hearted fun. When my team is slacking to move to a Objective, they find me there sitting on a chair or playing an instrument or doing an exercize. I salute or wave to people I meet in the world. I get terrified/scared when meeting Sith Lords or fist bump fellow Smugglers. I slap NPCs that annoy me, do a dance/fireworks/backflips when we clear a tough encounter. On certain toons I flex my muscles/brag/show off.
Emotes are a fun little thing that can make people laugh when you use them at the right time. I definitely will emote to Freelancers I meet in the world. Well, until Bioware introduces PVP and I can greet people with explosive round instead.

The game doesn't really seem balanced for it.

Who knows. If the sales are not what EA hoped for there might be a quick PvP patch to try and lure that crowd in. And it probably won't be that hard to create separate PvP free roam areas for whoever wants to gank/get ganked.

It seems like they would have to adjust the story as well to accommodate freelancers going around killing each other.
I really hope they don't add PVP.
