Not that I think there is anything wrong with people of any age playing video games but when I think of people in their 40s/50s, I dont immediately imagine them playing games. I remember trying to get my dad to play games with me when I was a kid (he was in his 40s when I was a kid) and he had no interest in them at all. I got him to play 1 round of street fighter on sega one time and when I blocked all his hits he told me it was a stupid waste of time. Since then I have just always imagined people older than me being not being interested in "playing nintendo". Heh, and I had the total opposite sort of upbringing and I always find it weird how younger people think that older people gaming is odd. My Dad's been a gamer for a long, long time, back when all gaming was was pinball machines in smoky dive bars. He brought home an Atari 2600 and I vividly remember playing games with him on it when I was single digits. We just grew from there, playing SNES together, etc. One of our favorite things to do when Playstation came out was "co-op" Metal Gear Solid... he'd play until he got to a point that stumped him, then hand me the controller. I'd then play until I got to a part that stumped me and handed the controller back. Together, we completed the whole game like that, filling in for each other's weaknesses. Growing up, I never imagined a time would come when my Dad would ever stop gaming (and he still does now at 60), and now at 32 I can't foresee a time when I will ever stop gaming. I'm not entirely sure why gaming is seen as a thing to "outgrow". Do people outgrow reading books or watching movies or watching TV shows? Why are video games the one medium where people find it less-than-totally-acceptable for adults to engage in, while binge-watching GOT on HBO is totally a more "adult" thing to do?

Yeah in my 20s my dad commented on me playing games all the time and I was like "dude you spend like 4 hours a day sitting in front of the TV, so do I but I have a controller in my hand"

Yeah in my 20s my dad commented on me playing games all the time and I was like "dude you spend like 4 hours a day sitting in front of the TV, so do I but I have a controller in my hand" Exactly. I honestly feel like video games have somewhat more legitimacy because at least you are actively engaged and working your brain (be it solving a puzzle or simply just hand/eye coordination and reaction time), whereas watching TV/movies is a completely passive experience. Reading is more active, too, since you're putting forth effort to read the words and imagine the characters/scenes in your mind.

My father was a very active chess player up until his 60s, played in local club tournaments and even had some ELO around 2000, not bad for that age. He taught me the rules when I was 5 and brought me to a chess school so I can get to his level and play with him. I got there when I was around 12 or 13 and we regularly played a match of 10 at 5 min blitz at least once a week. I still progressed and got better when I was in high school and at some point, it was really hard for him to even draw but we still played up until I left for college and sometimes, when I got back home for the summer. When he was around 65, I bought him one and then two more chess computers with actual pieces since he had hand movement troubles with a mouse and could not normally use a PC. And he kept regularly playing at least 3-4 games every day to the very last days of his life. And he was 83 years of age then.

I got him to play 1 round of street fighter on sega one time and when I blocked all his hits he told me it was a stupid waste of time. Since then I have just always imagined people older than me being not being interested in "playing nintendo". My first computer was a Commodore Vic 20 bought new and my first game was a text adventure called Vampire Hunter, the code for it had to be manually entered into the computer from the back pages of either Commodore or Ahoy magazine, I forget which, then debugged and saved to cassette tape. It took me about 3 hours to type it in, another 3 to debug it and finally another 3 to beat it the first time. I was 23 then. From there I went to a C-64 and games like Elite, Zork, Bards Tale and all the SSI gold box games. Then the Amiga 500, 2000, 3000 and finally after Commodore committed suicide, a Windows box...which I hated and switched to OS/2, and finally back to Windows when 95 came out. What I'm saying is that most of us older gamers didn't start playing games when we were 40+ years old. We started when we were much younger, but some people don't seem to realize that computers and games have been around for a long time. Pong was invented in 1958 and Zork, in 1977.

IDK of course, everything is possible after Mr. T's election, but I seriously doubt it. Just because it would have had better metacritic scores. Sorry, did not mean to derail or anything. I don't think I've actually seen a demographic survey of the ME reddits, maybe I'm just assuming based on redditor stereotypes plus the fact that most of the people in the ME reddits are whiny crybabies when people don't like their most favoritest gameuuuu~~~

I guess its mostly that growing up my dad, uncles, dads friends and pretty much all "adult" men I had contact with were very old school outdoorsy type guys. He wasnt into hunting or fishing but dad would spend sun up to sun down mowing/doing yard work, working on cars/trucks/semis/tractors, working on the house, welding, building shit, etc. I mean I always realized that groups of people are not monoliths and that older people who played games certainly existed, I just never really had any contact with them until getting the internet in my 20s.

^ To follow up on that, I have to add that there actually was ONE group of guys in town that were significantly older than me and my friends that we did LAN Halo with a number of times. We were in highschool and these guys would probably have been mid to late 30s at the time. Wed beat their asses black and blue but they were always willing to come back for more. My dad actually worked with one of them for awhile and had assholishly commented a number of times how he "couldnt believe a grown ass man would waste his time like that." Dads kind of a prick at times, what can I say.

Im curious what they consider a "video gamer". Does that include stupid shit like facebook games and candy crush? IDK about facebook, I don't go there. But IMHO, there is nothing wrong with Candy Crush, it is actually not that easy and has half-decent game mechanics for a matching puzzle. Not everyone likes to shoot things or space magic/fantasy role playing. I consider it less weird than train simulator, for example. But again, these train videos, they are hours long, and have more views on tube than Penguin's pack buying guides. What do we know? Absolutely nothing.

I'm 36 married with two kids. Been gaming pretty much all my life I think.
Remember I'd be on spacebar duty while my dad played Turrican on a commador, he's currently playing rainbow six siege lol he turns 60 this year & is still mad for it....I saw some old pics of him playing Pac-man & he'd taken the score all the way back to 0, by that I mean his high score went past the counter so it had to reset.True story

What I am implying is that I dont consider people gamers when their sole experience with games are facebook and mobile phone games. Farmville and the like does not a gamer make.

So why the fuck are we all so old when the average /me or /mecoop user is probably 10 years our junior Yeah, I guess many younger people grew up with a smartphone in their hand, so social media, apps and Reddit are pretty much unavoidable. Whereas when old farts like us started getting serious about online interactions, it was Usenet or bust, which was later superseded by message boards like ye olde BSN. Force of habit and all that. I hate Reddit myself, but then I often find myself grumbling at some habits that my 10 years younger sister has. I don't need or want none of that shit.
