To be honest my issue with the presentation is less that they used non-gamer actors and more that they were just so lifeless about it. It's like they were just reading off a script in rehearsal. One of the reasons I tend not to watch the presentations at gaming events and then just look up the trailer is because most people that they get to present, even if they are a developer, just bring little to no energy to the stage. I can't help but think that non-actor genuine gamers would have brought the enthusiasm needed to make the demo a hit. I mean, it's a brand new IP from Bioware and discussion around it is a little lackluster. This shouldn't be the case. How would this be done? Everything in this demo was carefully staged so that the player would arrive in the right place as events triggered and positioned so as to show off what the other Javelin was doing. Remember that this vertical slice was something they put together to show off the features of the game in a limited timeframe. That's not something they could pull off just by giving a random gamer a controller, especially considering the game itself may not even be fully playable at this point in time. I'm not saying the script wasn't horrible, but it seems like you're giving it too much weight.

I don't see what was wrong with it, then again me and my friends are more like the people in the video then what people like the OP.

Whats the difference if they're still reading from a script? My point is there isn't much room for organic reaction in this demo. I believe they actually said the QA staff practiced quite a lot to get the timing right. This demo doesn't need gamers, it needed a better script with more energetic actors. Maybe they should have hired Terry Crews to hype them up or something...

The difference is in the delivery. How you say something is massively important. Like saying "I love you" while looking at your phone vs looking them in the eye. Passion is important in gaming. Bioware lacked that at E3. Better actors would be an improvement. Getting gamers (or even devs) to do it, enthusing about the great ideas in the new IP, way better. That said, the level of scripting is a waste, might as well post it on youtube and skip the expo altogether.

At least the things they show off are impressive enough on their own.

Think about it, if you need to pay people to pretend to enjoy the game during the moment where it matters the most (first impressions/E3), how confident can you be in your product? Can we be given the trailer without the awful actors please? It was an example, more realistic would be 'ShitLord' and 'ButtBreath69' ignoring each other. Realism. And we're 16 months out, there will be more trailers. I am incredibly tempted, and contemplating in real-time, changing my username to Shitlord_ButtBreath69

that was a DEMONSTRATION not an a simple advertisement. I will take a dev commentary over that any day of the week. Any gamer who DOES play these games likely cringed at the uber fake interaction. It was a conceptual demonstration of an unfinished game, designed to sound like people who had been playing it for a long time. That is an advertisement. Bioware isn't trying to pull the wool over your eyes, stop taking it as a personal insult. I never said they were I just found it aggravating. It just really grinds my gears somehow. Destiny did it, the division did it...now Anthem did it.

So much negativity! Does it help that one of the "actors" wasn't an actor at all, but Sam Maggs, one of the writers on the game? Which makes me doubt any of the players were actors -- they might all of been devs on the game.
And her laugh was not scripted.
I personally think that decision was a cool move. Sure, it sounds stilted, because they weren't allowed to scream, "FUCK THE FUCKING RNG!" like *real* gamers. They had to keep it clean. So what, big whoop!? I'd rather have amateurs that have an emotional investment in playing the game and having fun than some hired, overly polished and emoted actor.

However people feel about Bethesda/Fallout 4, that 2015 E3 showcase that Todd Howard did was the last one I watched all the way through. That kind of enthusiasm, knowledge and charisma can't be bought or scripted. Anthem really needs that. I think it depends on who you used. If you brought somebody from the development staff, programmers aren't always known for being the best public presenters =P Todd Howard is pretty solid from what I've seen. Personally I really like Chris Metzen at Blizzcon for Blizzard before he retired.

Every single co-op game that in recent memory that gets gameplay demo like this has the scripted, stilted "banter" in order to provide more exposition about game mechanics or systems. Seriously, just go look at some of the gameplay reveals for Destiny, The Divison, Ghost Recon Wildlands, or any other game like that and you'll see the same patterns repeating themselves.
Bioware refusing to bucking the trend says nothing about their "confidence" in the game or whatever.

The salt in this thread is higher than expected, but of good quality. Like a Himalayan red sea salt perhaps. The salt is understandable though. The OP was not well thought out, and was fairly ignorant of how these things go. Probably has a better idea now, so salt can be useful in moderation.
