So another idea for a thread that I have had for a loooonnnnnggg time. Seriously. About a year. But was not exactly sure about how to go about it.
Now as some may know I am an aspiring writer. But, among my many other weaknesses as a writer, one of them is the lack of networking. I also know I am probably not the only writer on BSN, I can think of three in fact...off the top of my head...I think. So here is a place for us to discuss writing. Whether you have more professional ambitions or just an amateur fan fic writer. Few rules, other then just discuss the art of writing, maybe share your work, have fun, network, and most importantly learn from one another. Lets just see where this goes.

I think this is a good idea to discuss writing and learning tips. I'm writing RP at the moment and I'm in dire need for tips.

Really when you are thinking about designing a character for roleplaying the same laws tend to apply for creating an individual character fresh from scratch for your own work. It is one of the reasons why I like the CRPG genre because it gives me the chance to practice, actually practice, chracterizations. So even when I am relaxing and having fun I can still practice for what I hope is an ultimate career.
Pretty much with each new BioWare release since...well I guess since I got my hands on DA O what I have tried to do...actually hell with Mass Effect even. Give my character an attempted arc. And an arc is about the change of one state to becoming something else. So for example Cassandra Ryder was a bit of a daddy's girl and relied on him for protection and guidance. She had no real delusions of greatness, didn't want to be anything even resembling a pathfinder, didn't want to lead, more of a follower, and then WAM she gets into her position. My canon Trevelyan was a bit of a loner, didn't really want to lead, despised politics, hated the chantry. Yet through the course of the game she found a new family, and learned the world was a lot more complicated.
So, the trick of any RPG and its game systems and dialogue...be it pen and paper, on the forum, or something like Mass Effect, is how well do the game systems support your intended arc? How well do the events of the game support your arc? Maybe instead of growing from scared kid to complete person Cassandra became jaded by the experience?

I don't aspire to write novels. I prefer to write fanfics. Thus far, I've finished two. A sageuk (Korean historical drama) and a MET fic. I'm presently working on a sequel from the MET fic and a DAI origins fic.

Actually its more some sentences for two different stories. One of them I managed to get out two paragraphs.
The last thing she remembered before being awoke was the sharp edge of a blade sliding across her throat, the warm liquid of blood pouring down her chest and the cries of her adopted sister Abigale. After that, it use to bring shivers to her core, but perhaps now she has been tormented by the event to the point that she had been thoroughly discretized to it. The vagueness of it did not diminish the horror she felt, as she believed that she witnessed the malevolent grin of Satan as he transformed into the shape of her sister and then herself. Soon she found herself on her street, but this time malgnated from destruction with bodies littered around and all at the center of it was her.
When she came to, to see her sister before her smiling with overwhelming joy that tears fell from her eyes, while she grasped in her fist a bloodied kitchen knife. Abigal dropped the knife and rand over to Austan, threw her arms around her older sister. As she sobbed into her sister’s shoulder, Austan forced her sister’s arms off of her and slammed her back onto the concrete ground and preceded to strangle her all the while screaming, “Stanic bitch!”
When the authorities reached the small town of Stubervill they found the greatest massacres they’ve ever witnessed; everyone but 3 people were dead, one was barely alive, the other became the infamous crazed madman, and the other had spent the entire time locked terrified in his basement.

At long last, I've found the writers' corner. Hey everyone! I've been writing MEA one-shots before MEA came out. Finally pulled myself together to write my MEA fanfic, Project: Andromeda, a few days post-release, it's a work-in-progress. It'll be wonderful if everyone here can just flick through it, and shoot feedback my way. Link's in my profile. Forgive me if I sound terse or tense, but reviews are scarce, and far and few in between chapters. I'm frustrated, really, can't really figure out if I'm doing okay. Until I found this thread. Thanks, colfoley. I'm an aspiring writer, just the problem of procrastinating too much. My post-apocalypse story has been going since 2009. I get what you mean. I've been ff.net-registered since 2006, yet only posted my first true fanfic this year. Never really got around to finishing my other "projects."

I love writing. I feel like I still have room for improvement but a dream of mine (maybe one that's out of reach) is to have something I've written published one day. At the moment I'm suffering from a simple lack of motivation, lol. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread and good luck to all the aspiring writers in here!

I'm up for suggestions whenever I can actually push them out. Expect me to be quiet for 99 percent of the time, since I haven't updated my fic in over two and a half years. Despite actually having written four or so chapters since.

I used to like writing when I was younger, don't have the time for it these days unfortunately. Every time I get the urge to write something worth a shit, I remember how much work I would have to put into getting the foundation in place and setting up the worldstate. Not having an end-goal in mind when you go to outline a longer story is a cardinal sin to me, since if you don't have anything for the plot to build towards right from the get-go, you'll wander around aimlessly and it won't be very fun for anyone involved.
Oh and I'm a real stickler for grammar, both from a reading and writing perspective. I've re-written entire paragraphs over inane shit like using a few too many commas, and I've completely dropped otherwise good stories because the authors didn't have as firm a grasp on writing mechanics as I would have liked.

I've had a few things published, but my favorite obsession for some time now has been fanfic. Specifically my ongoing DA:I series (link is below in my sig).
I'm currently nearly done the first draft of the second long-novel-length entry in it, so I'll be launching into editing the beast soon. Anyway, if anyone's inclined to check any of it out (they're not all novel-length!), I welcome feedback.

I liked writing character banters when I was young, and short funny stories. But I've got tired of fighting grammar and find it too hard to write something that a non-captive audience would read.
If you are looking for peer critique, The Critter Workshop back in my time was a pretty good thing, where it was required to submit critiques to earn points to post your own piece for critique. I am pretty sure it's still going. Most stuff there was boring or inept, but sometimes you would come across a readable story.
To be completely blunt, most inspiring writers, even published, are insufferably boring to read and write stuff that is too long. The modern obsession with never-ending series is cancer on literature imo. The talent for delivering an "oh, shit, this is GOOD!", well, you'll know fast if you have it, and if you don't, it's a fun hobby.

I love to write; always have. I did my master's program in creative writing, and while I enjoyed it I realize my real love is bringing writers together for support and general commiseration. It's not the solitary activity a lot of people initially think of when they think of writing. That said, even though I've done original fiction, I find I just plain enjoy writing fanfiction.
I would say, if you're just starting out, try starting small: a one-shot, a character sketch, a prompt. There's a great DA prompt generator out there! Don't even worry if it doesn't go anywhere. My first DA fic was a character sketch just to start playing with the world. Same goes for original writing. I have dozens of small pieces I call "test drives" where I just put my character(s) in situations and see how they react. Some of it ends up in the larger work; most of it doesn't, but no writing is ever wasted. By testing out the characters I've learned something or other about them, which contributes to their overall characterization, which in turn helps the larger work as a whole.

I've written about 800 pages of a marathon Fantasy epic. I originally started it because I was so annoyed with Jordan's slow pace of story progression in WoT. I was like: I'll show you how it should be done! I planned it as a trilogy of three 800 page volumes. But looking at my current progress, it now looks more like 10-12 1200-page volumes, so I'll probably die before it's finished.
Then I've written close to 200 pages of a SF novel. Since Ian Banks is dead, I have this itch to write Culture novels. I'd love to get that opportunity, and if I ever get successfully published (I can always dream), I'll try to talk to people about it. This is not a Culture novel though. The technology level is somewhat more modest.
...And I've written about 50 pages of a crime/thriller story. I'm not entirely happy with most of it so it has to be extensively rewritten if I continue.
But mainly, I work long hours in my 'real' job, and am usually quite tired when I get home. I've kinda realized that to be more productive I would have to quit my job. And that is not going to happen anytime soon, I think.
But right now, just because of this thread, I think I'll work a bit on the SF novel.
I quite like to write. I get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Unfortunately, I also become so invested in my characters that I have a really hard time killing off anyone of them. I'm not exactly G.R. Martin, if you get what I mean.

Though it does make sense and can be done well usually i think there are better ways of creating tension. Sadly it seems character deaths are the in thing...so my poor poor characters.
