Nexusmods has a treasure trove of mods for Origins and modders are still making mods for this venerable old game. Unfortunately, some are more difficult to use than others and some may require mods not easily found. I'm trying to start an elf female PT with something other than the lame presets. Two mods which seemed to offer nice options are: Ferelden models www.nexusmods.com/dragonage/mods/3295/?Beautiful elf female presets www.nexusmods.com/dragonage/mods/1395/?tab=4&&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fdragonage%2Fajax%2Fcomments%2F%3Fmod_id%3D1395%26page%3D1%26sort%3DDESC%26pid%3D0%26thread_id%3D215448&pUp=1I installed both. I also installed all the required mods except for those I thought unnecssary. I.e. tatoo mods, since I don't use them. With Ferelden models, I get the presets but they're missing something. The skin and eyes are glassy and can't be fixed with slider options. In the beautiful elf mod, one option I like showed up in the CC without eye brows. I have used the Chargen compiler. One thing I was thinking about regarding the chargenmorph files is that some mods come with a chargen and when I extract the chargen to override, it will request overwrite. Should I overwrite? Or should I extract to a folder within the override file so that I can compile it with previous chargen later?

No no no, don't allow chargenmorphcfg.xml files to overwrite one another. If you do that, the Character Creator will only recognize assets added by the last mod you installed.
Extract each chargen mod to its own folder, with the chargenmorphcfg.xml for that mod inside of the folder. Then run the compiler to do just that: compile a single XML from the many. (Note there can ultimately be only one chargen XML file in override!)
'Glassy' skin and eyes (by which I mean silver-y grey or shiny white) is the result of missing textures. Even if the textures are in override, unless they are properly accounted for in the chargenmorphcfg.xml file, the CC won't find them or use them.

Looks like I have to reinstall everything....again! And then compile! Oh well... If I tried to learn modding for Origins, would the skill transfer over to any other game? Or is this sort of a unique situation?

Every game is different, though there can be similarities if the games use the same engine. Of the games I am most conversant with modding:
Modding DAO is not the same as modding DA2 (though they do both use an override folder and chargemorphcfg.xml) and modding DAI is entirely different.
Morrowind and Oblivion are similar, but use different tools.
Modding all the Witcher games was such a nightmare I've blocked it out entirely. *shudder* Ditto modding the first Baldur's Gate game. *even more shuddering*
And the Mass Effect trilogy games have common aspects (textures can be installed in the same fashion across the series), but differ otherwise.

So if I mod, DAO is it because it's the game you can do the most with, at least compared to the other DA games and all the MET games. I did go through all the mods necessary to support Ferelden Models and Beautiful Elf Female Presets, reinstalled and then compiled chargen files. The Ferelden model presets look better than they did, but the skin is still not right. It's a pity; I wanted to try the "Adeira" model. The "Beautiful Elf Female Presets" came out better and are usable so I'll have to go with those. I think I should take up modding DAO just better learn how to make mods work properly.

One woman's opinion: DAO is easier to make mods for, but modding DA2 is simpler for the end-user/player.
And I don't find any of the MET games to be particularly easy to mod as a player; I've never made mods for any of them.

About glossy skin: that is often, when a tattoo is missing, if you download the tattoos nexessary for the mod, they won't shop up in the tattoo selction or overwrite anything (this can to my knowledge only done manually), but it shows up on the preset and the glossy skin goes away. You can get rid of th tattoo by switching through the tattoo sliders and get back to the first slider (no tat). Otherwise making a folder for each mod in the override is a good advice. That way, conflicting chargenmorphs can't overwrite each other and you can complie them with the tool.
About eyes not showing up: I used those presets too and some of them uses an eye mod, that is no longer available. So sadly, those presets won't work probably anymore
