So, I was reading Anora's entry in World Of Thedas Vol. 2 when I stumbled upon the West Hills incident. If you're unfamiliar with the subject: a farmer said that a hundred giants had taken over his farm near Crestwood, so King Maric sent a scout to verify the claim. After ten days, the scout had still not returned, and both Prince Cailan and Lady Anora had disappeared. As it turned out, they had embarked on a journey to slay the giants; They later found out that there actually was only one of them. What happened next is unclear, but a woodcutter said that he heard someone shouting about "glory" and "history" (*cough* Cailan *cough*) and, after having climbed a tree to avoid stampeding cattle, that he «saw some kind of spirit, all golden, shouting at the forest and saying, "I command you to go back! I command it!".» Some time later, Anora and Cailan were found covered in bruises, cuts and ash, refusing to answer to any questions provided by Maric, Arl Wulff of West Hills, or the Royal Guard. Cailan only said that "It's better than the people of Ferelden never know the lenghts to which their prince must go to protect them." and Anora that "We defeated the giant. Now, let's never speak of this again." The giant's burned corpse was later found at the bottom of a cliff almost a mile from the freehold.
Now, it seems obvious that magic was involved at some point in the fight. But how? And why do neither Cailan nor Anora wish to talk about their endeavour? This all seems to suspicious to me. What Cailan said seems to indicate that he had to resort to dealing with demons. But how? He's not a mage. Are they sheltering an apostate? Is Anora an apostate? Lol, my mind is melting.

You're leaving out a few bits in the story.
-First, a farmer near Crestwood appears at court and appeals for help against a "hundred" giants that have taken over his farm. -Maric sends out a scout to investigate. The scout never returns. -Unbenownst to all, the scout finds one giant at the farm. He gets cornered in a root cellar by the giant and can't leave. -Ten days later, Cailan offers to go deal with the giants. He and Anora disappear. -About six days later, Anora and Cailan appear at an inn, claiming they need a cartload of ale. Cailan is badly beaten up. -They're directed to a local brewer, who wasn't at home. However, two dozen casks of ale are stolen from the brewer's storehouse. -Cailan, Anora and the scout turn up again at the Crestwood tavern, stinking of burnt hair and cheese. -More scouts find a woodcutter who relays a story about a golden figure and a fleeing herd of cattle. -The farm's cheese storeroom is found empty, even though it had several hundred wheels, and a giant's burned body is found in a ravine.
My guess? Cailan and Anora went out to the farm on a youthful impulse and Cailan got his ass stomped. Since they couldn't defeat the giant, they somehow lured it into a trap involving cows, cheese and a lot of ale, which was used to set the giant on fire.
GLORIOUS!

Ok, now I want to hear the whole story - sounds like fun

Sounds to me like they got the giant drunk enough that it just fell off the cliff, probably after following the smell of cheese. The "Golden Spirit" was probably Cailan in his shiny armour who was provoking the giant into chasing him or simply bravado after the giant had already fallen over the cliff.
This story makes Anora sound like she had a lot of fun with Cailan, probably to the disapproval of both fathers, and so her declared affection for him was genuine. It may also be why Alistair grew on her as he reminded her of his brother in more than just looks.

Cailan killed the giant with a huge pot of fondue. Got the big fellow drunk on cheese and then shoved him in the fire.
