Thread now enjoying our 2nd 'birthversary'...
I was torn on whether to call this a birthday or an anniversary, so I've determined that it's a bit of both. As we all know, on July 29th, 2016, BioWare made the announcement that the official forums would be closing down, then be deleted entirely shortly thereafter. Understandably, the population of the forums went into panic mode. Some went into full anarchy, seeking permabans as their final act of defiance in the face of coming destruction. Some begged and pleaded to BioWare to reconsider. Most went into a bit of shock, stating their disappointment and farewells. And all wondered what to do next, where to go. To Reddit? To social media? Or just disperse, a community many years withstanding only to fall fragmented into the winds of the Internet. In the wake of the announcement, a few got busy making alternative forums or adding wings to their pre-existing forums to try and be The Next BSN. Admittedly, I almost called it quits myself. I had first discovered the BioWare Social Network (as it was known at the time) in 2010, when I picked up Dragon Age: Origins used at GameStop on a whim and fell in love. It was the first time, since starting gaming back in 1990, that I was so immersed that I wanted to see if other people were talking about the game, story, and characters... and Google led me there. I became a very active community member from Day One, although I am most likely recognized from the Mass Effect and Dragon Age multiplayer forums because as much as I loved SP, I found the MP incredibly enjoyable and spent a lot of time there, eventually establishing The Resource Libraries. So, after 6+ years of being active on BioWare's forum, doing my best to help the community with the Libraries and guides, conducting the N7 Gauntlet ME3MP tournament for fun, making friends with fans and devs alike, and sharing a lot of my personal story with the community at large, it held a well of memories for me... and to face its closure and imminent demise hit me on a very personal level. The thought alone of trying to somehow preserve the Resource Libraries when it would involving saving all the threads they linked to... and not being tech-savvy myself... it was a daunting thought and I briefly wondered what the point of even trying would be. I was gutted, and thought that perhaps this was truly the end of online fandom for BioWare as I knew it. When it seemed as if a large handful of competing "lifeboat" forums popped up, I saw a community I loved dearly facing inevitable splintering and it felt even worse. I just wanted the BioWare forum to survive somewhere else, whole, even if it meant BioWare wasn't running the show. It was like watching the Reapers descend, but wondering what the point of fighting was if there was no hope of survival. Then, Cyonan reached out to me. There was a name steeped in ME3MP datamining legend, a colleague I very much respected, and he had gathered a small team of names I also recognized and respected... trying to put together a lifeboat forum to serve as the new BSN. It was fledgling, brand new, wet paint everywhere... but in their virtual eyes, I saw the gleam of hope, the determination not to die without a fight. It re-energized me, breathed new life into me when I had all but decided to perhaps walk away from it all. I agreed to join in those efforts, and that's when I threw my remaining time on BSN Prime full-force into 1) pulling as many people here as I could, focusing especially on the traditional threads and posters that made Prime great (the Twitter threads, the Solas Blanketfort, the DrinkQuistion, and many others) and 2) trying to re-establish and pull over as much data as possible to try and preserve the massive amounts of knowledge that BioWare threatened to purge. Major props go to FextraLife for importing most of the old forum over to their site, and major kudos to Anubis for preserving as much as he could of my ME3MP and DAIMP Resource Libraries. The more I saw this place grow... the more I saw of familiar faces and names... the less sad I grew at BSN Prime's approaching demise. Today, on August 1st, I stand a year after the first post was made in this new forum. Today, I stand amongst 8,811 members... over 11,400 threads... over 817,900 posts... and I have to say, I'm goddamn proud of you lot. Proud of the staff here who toiled beside me in building this place, who continue to build it and try to make it a place balanced between freedom and respect (a harder line to balance than you'd think, believe you me, and it's ever a work in progress to improve and be better). Proud of our members who took the leap with us into the unknown and chose to stay and make this place not just a forum, but a new home for us all. Proud of what this place has become in a year, and of what it will grow to be in the coming years. This was all of us. All of us coming together with a vision to make a new life after the old forums. I feel privileged that you chose to make that life here with us, with me. Happy 1st birthiversary, BioWare Social Network Unofficial Forums. Here's to many, many more to come.

July 29th to 31st 2016 were 3 days of crazy. Initially, I was helping another unofficial BSN splinter for 36 hours. Though despite the best intentions of that forum's founder, it quickly became glaringly obvious that it wasn't the lifeboat I was looking for. With Cyonan and DragonRacer 's names attached to this project, and launching August 1st, new BSN seemed to be the answer. With the BSN twitter account also active on August 1st (and aarynflynn our first Twitter follower) the omens seemed good. BSN Prime always had a certain something about it. I knew no other game forum that had this level of passion and character, most were insipid corporate forums with little activity. I'm most proud and grateful that whatever the 'secret sauce' of the BioWare fan community was, I think it has successfully migrated over here. So happy 1st anniversary to new BSN, thanks to all for coming along for the ride. (with BioWare we appear to be guaranteed a wild ride...)

My first reaction upon hearing the news of the impending closure one year ago was sardonic laughter. I joined BSN in 2011 because Mass Effect 2 and Miranda specifically, making her thread in the Character and Romance section my online home and hardly venturing from it for many moons, until close to the release of ME3. ME3 of course brought us all a few bundles of joy, the Romance forum nuking and a little thing called the ME3 ending debacle so naturally I was right in the middle of that. Nobody you'd notice, I never spearheaded any movements or sent any baked goods or anything decidedly less pleasant, but I was there. I made my mock threads, I added my voice to many, and though I left disappointed by our eventual suckering, I was nonetheless impressed with the show we'd put out. Never would I have dreamed of influencing a gaming decision I didn't like, even if only a little. I had drifted away from the BSN twice now, not driven out by any one event or user(s), mostly because I felt it was time to move on. And both times I came back, because fuck it, it was entertaining to read, and eventually to engage. My first return saw the closing of Off-Topic. Now I had only started hanging out in off topic, mostly in the SWTOR and GoT threads. But I was swept up in the closing nonetheless, adding my voice yet again in response to BioWare shenanigans and getting my first dose of exile in freeforums. Well, in a manner of speaking anyway; I never burned any bridges to Prime and occasionally still posted in the ME section. I met some cool folks there including fellow staff Cyonan and Draining Dragon (I knew of Cyonan from MP of course but hadn't personally interacted with him). It was there that I found an (admittedly smaller) sense of community that Prime lacked for me in the final days, due to people moving on). Eventually I drifted away from BSN again. And then I read about the impeding closure on the TOR forum of all places. How to explain my reaction. Sardonic, yes. Cynical, undoubtedly. Actually amused? I did in fact literally laugh out loud. It seemed so obvious, such a "scheming little BioWare" move, particularly with Andromeda looming. They grew tired of, not only bitching about, but also organized resistance to their mistakes (or perhaps even their vaunted "art"); and in their own backyard no less. This seemed almost childish to predict. I doubt I was the only one (even out of the people still here) to cheekily throw a one fingered salute and snark "burn in hell you bloated carcass of weird memes and even weirder fetishes". But as I watched the chaos grow in the face of the coming doom and I saw talks of lifeboats forming, a little something, an almost forgotten feeling started quietly but with firm insistence tugging at me. I think, with the magic of Mass Effect already stripped, inspected, analyzed and frankenstein'd back together in several different configurations (for science), before being abandoned for some time, I may be forgiven for forgetting what that feeling was: Fandom (or fandumb, depending on who you ask). The one underlying truth that below all the shitposting, weirdposting, mod fails and quote pyramids, we were there because we loved it. Loved Mass Effect (or Dragon Age, or legacy games) despite the flaws and in a really weird, possibly twisted way, loved the BSN too. Oh we might prefer different sections of it, maybe even sections that were no longer strictly about BioWare's games. But the environment was fundamentally the same nonetheless. There was another aspect to it too. We didn't just love it, we fought for it. Who did we fight for it? Well that answer, if it can be coherently organized as such, is multiple choice at best. We fought ourselves, we fought BioWare, we fought the media, I think someone had a trident at one point... anyway the point is after ME3, organizing and standing up for things that were not ok in these games we loved became part of what BSN was about. And to my surprise, despite being done with Mass Effect and heavily skeptical towards Andromeda, I found I was not willing to stand by and let that principle get deleted. This sounds like some grand "taking a stand" moment, where epic music would play, jets (or eagles) would fly overhead and a gruff military man would shed a single tear. It really wasn't lol. In practice, what happened was Cyonan decided to make this lifeboat and I pretty much just sauntered over with all the conviction of a View Askew character. But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to do more, to do my part to ensure there would always be a place to not only vent but constructively organize the next time Bioware dun goofed. Whatever you may think of Retake, HTL and all that, they did some good. Good I just didn't see being done on Twitter. I may have been mistaken about that, as Andromeda had a greivance of its own addressed through people organizing and asking for change, and it was a hashtag that was the speartip of that campaign. Still I would hope that this place played a part or will play a part in any such organizing in the future, and that fans will always have a voice to call out their gratitude or unhappiness in full. We have been blessed by the active participation of some of the devs, so this has worked out even better than I dreamed. Despite the sardonic sneering, when that final day came and the clocks kept counting down and anyone posting in that last thread kept wondering when the post button would spit out an error I had a bad case of the feels after all. To anyone who's known me this past year, my propensity for injecting random Babylon 5 references, images and memes is hardly news. So it's fitting that my last post linked a particular moment in the finale of that show, the final decomissioning of the station. I won't link it here, because that's not for this post, but anyone who knows it will see the significance. BSN was good times and bad, chaos and less-horrible-more-fun-chaos, laughs and tragedy. And it really was the end of an era. But now here we are, a year from where we started and going strong. This is not BSN, but the new (and unofficial, let's get legal off our case) BSN. And I think we've got the best of new and old. We've fostered a free but not completely chaotic atmosphere and we've captured the feel of BSN while hopefully improving on a couple of things. I couldn't be prouder of what we have here. Going forward I would hope even more improvements are on the menu and that, whatever happens with BioWare and their games, this place remains remains your destination of choice for related lulz and serious discussion both. Because despite whatever we the staff may have done to facilitate this place, it's you, the users that make it what it is. The rest is blem mlem mlem

So here's my story: I first joined BSN in the April of 2012 to post in the Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer section. That was essentially my home on the forum for the next year or so, and in that time I became aware of Cyonan and DragonRacer for their contributions to that community, though I maintained a low profile myself and only had a few conversations with DR. I was a member of a group called the Shelter that was designed to have off-topic discussions, though I never participated much in it. After support dropped off for ME3 MP, I gradually lost interest, and left the forum in 2013. I returned in 2014 to talk about Dragon Age: Inquisition, and at some point after that (I believe it was early 2015), I migrated to the Off-Topic Lobby. Unfortunately, my time there was short lived, as Off-Topic was shut down in August. I left BSN again and switched to posting on various offshoot forums for the rest of 2015 and the first month of 2016. I became personally acquainted with Cyonan and CrutchCricket during that time, and also dug up a two-year-old invitation to join the Shelter forum where DragonRacer was a moderator. In February of 2016, I decided to once again venture to BSN to participate in the Andromeda forum. I had a fun time there joking around with people, speculating based on the scraps of information we had available at the time, and occasionally getting into arguments. Despite this, I found myself contemplating leaving BSN for good, since I began to feel that the discussions of Andromeda were just going in circles. That was around the time the News hit that BSN was going to get shut down. I won't say I was completely shocked, since I had the feeling for awhile that Bioware was becoming distant from the forum community, but it still felt odd realizing that this place I had posted on for over 4 years was going to be deleted on such short notice. Fortunately, Cyonan came forward with his proposal to make BSN great again, and I decided to help with the transition to the new forum by posting about it on BSN. Shortly after the forum was created, I was offered a position as moderator, and of course, I accepted. One year on, I can safely say that I'm proud of the community we've all built here. I've been able to maintain old friendships from BSN Prime, but also met tons of awesome people I never interacted with much on the old forum. I'm hopeful that we can all continue to build on this success while still maintaining the things that define BSN as a community. Happy anniversary, everyone! And remember:

^^ TL;DR Where did this year go? This time last year I was in the same wreckage as many... Prime was shutting up shop and the ensuing uncertainty made for difficult times. My first reaction was sadness. My first thought was "how will I spend my evenings now?". I was never a big contributor on the original forums. I was a competent ME3:MPlayer but I never did (and still do not) understand it's technical complexities. I came to Prime to learn and to try to make myself a better player. I searched and tried multiple builds and found a few good friends along the way that I could PUG gernaut Gold with.... And yes, **FlameShield engaged mutherfuckers!** But it wasn't the infinite wealth of info that kept me coming back, it was the banter It was nice to meet a group of good-natured BSNers who didn't take themselves too seriously and just wanted to laugh and post stupid shit (you all know who you are!lol). When I first joined here I got a msg from Cyonan asking if I wanted to be a Moderator. My first reaction was... And to be totally honest I had no idea what I was doing at the start but it didn't take me long to learn and witness what Cyonan and the others were trying to achieve with this site... A place for those who want to debate and have a laugh along the way And that is something I will strive to maintain. Here's to many and long years ahead BSNuf. Cheers!

I wanted to repost this here as this was meant for both this and the "Concerning Our Forums" thread Sucked to hear and at first I thought it was a joke but April Fool's had gone by. When I saw the announcement on the forum I was very disappointed in BioWare. Just another mistake in what was looking like a hard fall from grace. For a while, I posted regularly like always and when the countdown to shutdown was imminent, I sought out a new forum with familiar faces. First, there was Fextralife. YUGE forum and was pretty sophisticated and their userbase was pretty large. It almost reminded me of Tekken Zaibatsu in its layout but something about it felt so impersonal. Then I heard CS was making his own forum, "LOL, next." Then I browsed the MP forum again, and saw Cyonan, our Great Leader was making a forum with the most familiar faces from MP and SP forums. I registered here as well and after about a week, it was clear that BSNUf was the place to be. On the last few weeks, I decided to go out in a blaze of glory, posting Bruce Blitz rants in a string of threads and some naughties in others. Mods were being assholes anyways, so I thought I might as well give them something to do. Glad this place has grown so much and it feels cool to have been here from the start. There are still some users from old school BSN I miss, and I wish more redditors came here as this forum feels like a much better organized and stable place to communicate. I just hope we can open that direct line of interaction with Bioware employees again.

I've been posting on various predecessors and iterations of BSN since the Neverwinter Nights days. (Lovely Lovely Aribeth - never forget!)
For any nerdy topic on the Internet, there will be one site that is The Hub of All Activity. BSN is that site for Bioware games.
There is incredible value in what we do here: a place to socialize, a place to discuss shared interests, and a place to suss out game mechanics and optimize around them.

I had joined the prime forums in february searching for MET info. When I heard about the closure, my exact thoughts were something like "well good now I will save so much time to more important stuff". When I found about this place I originally decided not to join so that I could concentrate on work and stuff. Why I did join, I cant remember but here I am a year later. I came for the info, stayed for the people. I got here my very first gaming friends and I wouldnt trade them for anything. An enormous thanks to the mods who do the hard work for keeping this place up and running. Stay strong and clear

As far as original bsn goes: I saw the talimancer wars, the Retake Event *American Fleet Represent yo!, Love Boat Jacob, Morrigan was best fest, The Never Ending Alistair Thread. One of my old posts, saved to my computer with original link that no longer works. From the bowls of BSN…..I is still sad panda over ME3’s color coded endings…even with the ECut stuffs. Thank goodness B5 didn't end that way. Even the Citidel DLC didnt quite save the series for me….PC Moddin community save me! MEHEM lights the way! BSN Thread: If B5/JMS had ended like ME3. social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/355/index/10609776 My Response: It would end with Sheridan diving into the abyss at Zha'Ha'dum without the foreshadowing of Lorien or Kosh being with him. Then cut away to credits with no VO from G'kar about the ending of that season into the next one.Ummmm....oh yes: Spent most of its dying time on private group forum side. As for now, found the remolded BSN here via, ME: Andromeda SPEKULATIONS!, final hope of ME series. Then after it launch, I continue to kek around the off-topic area. Reading books, recommending fun things, nostalgia of Babylon 5 and good storytelling.

Yes, yes, we were all saved by our glorious savior Cyonan, but there is more to the story!
When BioWare in their infinite wisdom decided to shut down their forums, a number of vile people gathered on a secret chat room on the TSG forum (or as they are now known, the politics thread regulars) to discuss the next step in their master plan! The fist thing that was finalized would who would be the puppet head of the new forums, the second was to figure out how to deal with It-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named, the thidlrd was that all of the rules from the vile TSG Forum would be implemented in full here, and the final thing was tp figure out who would be chosen as a moderator to give legitimacy to these forums.
Cynoan was quickly chosen to be the puppet head, it was decided that time would destroy It-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named, and numerous people were tapped to fill the moderation roles. When the other forum collapsed, these vile conspirators saw their chance, and launched their master plan in full!
A year passes and the plebs have all happily accepted the new regime! However, soon the masses will rise up and overthrow their vile TSG oppressors! It is up to you, the people!!!

A year already? I for one am very glad this place has the old BSN vibe to it now, sometimes I forget it's not actually the original. I'm also relieved that the staff have worked out well, as *ahem* other BSN lifeboats were torn apart by the folks in charge. That made me worry about any forum run by fans but from my own experiences here the mods have been pretty great. I have no idea how much work this place is for them on a daily basis but there are many people hanging around, both silent and vocal, who are grateful for it. Even if they do make little voodoo dolls of you occasionally.
