I'm still currently watching this movie (I have like 15 minutes left, it's practically over), but holy fucking Pagan god of terminal disease and suicide, this movie makes me want to rub my nuts against a cheese grater and then shoot myself in the head. Like, I'm not even exaggerating, this is easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life, let alone a bad adaptation of a manga/anime. Literally every main character is wildly out of character, they drop any and all pretense of following the plot of the original story about 10 minutes into the movie, the rules of the Note are either changed or new rules are added, about half of the supporting cast is cut out altogether, and the ending is completely and totally different from the anime/manga's ending.
I wish I were kidding, but I was identifying glaring flaws literally 30 seconds or so into the movie when it had shit like Light getting into fistfights, and 2 minutes later when he makes his first kill against a school bully. And this movie is so unnecessarily graphic compared to the anime/manga. For a series literally called "Death Note", there was relatively little blood and they didn't say "fuck" in every line of dialogue (they actually swear very little in the series), but the movie cranks the gore and swearing up to 11, like it's just a shittier Final Destination movie. A minor nitpick, but Misa's name is changed for the movie (along with literally everything else about her) to "Mia", but Light and L keep their original names. I guess "Misa" is just an obviously fake made-up fairy tale name, but "Light" and "L" are totally normal things to call your children?
-0/10. It's so irredeemably awful that it not only scores no points whatsoever, but it's actually managed to achieve some kind of bizarre paradox in adaptation by being both the same thing as the source material, by also nothing in any way similar to the source material. Like, I've been in a better mood when I tried killing myself than I am now that I've seen this fucking travesty.

Yeah, I heard it's hot trash. A shame, I was a fan of the original. At least watching snowflakes complaining the protagonist is white makes for an amusing show

Like, I've been in a better mood when I tried killing myself than I am now that I've seen this fucking travesty. Shit, took the words from out of my head. This movie was pure trash and its only positive was casting Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. I haven't gotten past 30 minutes in as within 30 seconds there were major flaws with Light as you mentioned. I saw the first two Japanese live action adaptations and while they were poorly cast and directed, at least they got the plot and character consistency right. This movie couldn't even interpret Light as a character right. Being bullied? Being in detention? Cursing and disrespecting his dad? Light was none of those things. That's the whole point of the character; a model student and citizen with extremely high IQ gets a god complex. Light is unlikeable from the start and his relationship with Misa is just forced as soon as he first kills someone. Garbage. It's only worth watching if you want to shit on it. Want a good anime adaptation? Check out the live action Rurouni Kenshin movies. They are top quality, with excellent directing, choreography, and chracterisation (except Zennousuke...). Even Shishio is arguably done better than in the anime. I strongly recommend watching that trilogy.

Yeah, I heard it's hot trash. A shame, I was a fan of the original. At least watching snowflakes complaining the protagonist is white makes for an amusing show I fully expected Light to be white, seeing that it's a localized American adaptation. But, for the love of fuck, why did they race change L, who is already mixed race half-white/half-Asian, and Watari, who is a white Englishman (with his Japanese name simply being an alias, not his real name)? L is black, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, there are plenty of black people in the U.S. so it's not totally outlandish, but L already *wasn't Japanese* so there wasn't really a need to "localize" L, and they made Watari *INTO* a Japanese man for absolutely no reason.

You don't even need to be a fan of the original story to hate it. Just on its own, the movie fails by not following its own internal logic and having the characters just all be universally unlikeable. It didn't help either that they undermined the character's motivations entirely. Original Light is an extremely intelligent, ruthless serial killer with delusions of grandeur, motivated by his own perverted ideals on "justice". Whereas the Netflix Light is an average douchebag who's main motivation seems to be impressing a girl, because the Death Note really gets her off. By toning down Light's more malevolent and sociopathic qualities, making him sympathetic and - to use L's Icarus metaphor - like a kid who flew too close to the sun and got burned, they completely failed to understand what his character was supposed to be. In the original, Light was clearly established as a villain protagonist from the start. He had already murdered 500 people before Ryuk even showed up to introduce himself and despite his claim that he only wanted to punish the guilty, he was fully prepared to kill innocents to save his own skin. Instead they let Mia take on the more cruel and capricious aspects of Light from the original.

As expected. Heck even Japan can't do it right, just look at the Attack on Titan movie.
Just let anime stay anime. I dread the day they want to make Cowboy Bebop a real life adaptation.

You really should check out the Rouroni Kenshin live action trilogy. It completely breaks that mold. I actually liked the Ghost in the Shell live-action adaptation. As someone who's seen almost all of the previous versions of the story, the live-action is perfectly serviceable and actually stays fairly faithful to the source anime film with homages to the TV show and manga. I do think that Scarlett Johansson could have been replaced with someone better suited for the role, but honestly she portrays the Major just fine.

I'm not into racebending.
There's plenty of asian American actors that could have played these roles. Whatever.
That said, i enjoyed the film. It didn't follow the manga but i enjoyed it for what it was. Willem Dafoe was enjoyable as Ryuk. Very playfully sinister.
The whole time I was watching the movie i was thinking about what i would do with the Death Note. Nothing. I wouldn't use it. No reason to. I'd hold onto it though just in case I ever got any ideas lol

The whole time I was watching the movie i was thinking about what i would do with the Death Note. Nothing. I wouldn't use it. No reason to. I'd hold onto it though just in case I ever got any ideas lol They even fucked Ryuk. Ryuk is supposed to be a passive observer who only even bothered with coming to the human world because he was bored in the shinigami realm. He is also supposed to have 2 Notes, which is a plot point in the series but is never brought up in the movie. In the movie, Ryuk is actively malicious and openly encourages Light to kill people, which the original Ryuk would not do (and not that he would have needed to, but that's more a problem with Light being warped beyond recognition in the movie than Ryuk). To Ryuk (in the series), what Light does with the Death Note is just a form of entertainment, like a movie to him. He makes a point to not interfere with *anything* until the very final minutes of the series. He's also present alongside Light pretty much all the time in the series. He's always by Light's side because he's technically possessing Light (one of the rules of the Note that AFAIK is never mentioned in the movie), unlike the 10 minutes total screentime that he has in the movie. No need to hide when nobody can see you, after all. Really, the only thing that they got sort-of right about Ryuk in the movie is his visual design, and even then they kind of fucked it up because Ryuk doesn't have his wings in the movie. The actual performance by Willem Dafoe was perfectly serviceable, but the material he had to work with was just way out of character. But then that applies to literally every other character in the fucking movie, except maybe Watari and Light's dad.

Personally, I don't think that adaptations need to be 100% like the source material, but what's the point of using the original characters if they don't have anything in common with their canon versions? The movie could have worked if it was just a different story in the same universe or something like that. I haven't actually seen it, but what heard of it made me cringe real hard.
