Finally downloaded DA Toolset after months of saying "I want to learn modding" and, of course, I have no idea how to use the Toolset or what I need to download to support the Toolset. I looked at YouTube, but couldn't find much. Are they any decent tutorials out there to help me get started and walk through some simple operations? My apologies to those who posted links for me to look at; I did numerous searches but couldn't find the relevant posts.

There are a few basic tutorials (and a lot of very useful info) on the toolset wiki. Recommendations for tutorials or guidance would be easier with some indication of what kind of mods you are interested in making, but I'll go ahead and mention some other information I found valuable when I was learning what little I know of modding DAO: Beyond FereldenweriKK's Custom Items tutorialWhuffie's Blog (esp. the good basic info on morph creation) And I find that all of my other bookmarks to tutorials/info are dead, with the demise of the old!BSN boards... that really was a trove of good information for both beginners and more experienced modders, and it's sad that it has all been lost.

Thanks gain, TSM! Yes, sad about the old BSN boards. Bioware really is obnoxious in the way it mindlessly throws its customers under the bus. (Or is this more EA's doing?) Things I'd like to do: 1. Change the armor/clothing on NPCs. 2. Be able to choose what gets looted off certain enemy NPCs - complete armor set or just parts of the armor. 3. I've used the Natural Body mods forever and think it's great. For the most part very realistic representations of the human body.....except for the feet. To me, they look like "doll feet" with the barely discernible toes. I noticed a modder nicknamed Setiweb (possibly no longer active) posted a clip on YouTube where she appears to have addressed that issue, at least in cut scenes. (I assume this would be the most difficult thing to do.) Such are the ideas that dwell in this sinister mind!

If you want to change NPCs to wear armour or clothing from mods, I recommend using 3rd party utilities rather than the toolset, which will crash on exporting the UTC. I've written a tutorial on that; you can find a link to it near the bottom of this page.

I've written a tutorial on that; you can find a link to it near the bottom of this page. I love your site! A lot of useful info...where to start? Sadly, find myself with the usual problems. The jenga construct that is my override file is broke again. I added a mod to give an additional mor and now, all of sudden, the added hairstyle mods. I tried adding the chargen files at your site and then re-compiling them, but no good. I assume I have to uninstall and reinstall all the hair and skin files...oh well.... Once I do that, I do want to try modding. Now if I wanted to change an NPC's clothing to something already in the game, would Toolset work best? Or the 3rd party utility you mentioned?

After reinstalling all the hair and skin texture mods, I tried using TerraEx's compiler but got an "unhandled exception" error. What do I need to do? What caused this problem?

No idea what might cause that. Maybe check the Nexus discussion page for the compiler for other reports of the issue/a solution?

No idea what might cause that. Maybe check the Nexus discussion page for the compiler for other reports of the issue/a solution? I accidently fixed the problem. I took out the override folder and put it on my desktop and created a new override folder and was about to reinstall everything. Then I decided to try one more thing and put the override folder back and then the compiler worked without doing anything else. Go figure... Perhaps a more typical problem: I installed the mod to make the body of Ser Henric on the bridge at Lothering look like a knight instead of a Templar. It's worked in past PTs, but this time the body was invisible though it was still possible to retrieve the note and locket. Any idea what would cause that?

I've written a tutorial on that; you can find a link to it near the bottom of this page. I tried installing pyGFF. I downloaded it and extracted it to its own folder under DAO. When I click on the application file however, it gets blocked by Windows Defender even after I click "run anyway." Any alternatives? Any other place to download this from?

You have the most interesting issues, and I never seem to have answers... with a double fail on my part this time: I don't install pyGFF to the game folder (I stick it in Program Files, on my dedicated Programs drive - I don't install anything on my C: drive other than the operating system) AND I don't use Windows Defender.
The only 'tweak' I ever make to pyGFF is to have it run with admin privileges.
Sorry to not be more helpful.

With all the different ways people have their computers configured, there's almost an infinite number of issues that pop up and throw a monkey wrench into things. That the more tech savy people like yourself are able to handle most issues is a small miracle. In my case, I have been having some virus and malware issues. Using the appropriate software to counter this will inevitable end up blocking some things. (I also really need to clean up my desktop and have some sort of method to organize my files. ) Anyhow, still learning quite a bit from your site! And Moira is quite cute, BTW! Human mage or Human Noble orgin?

Wanted to ask. You have an idea on how to make an existing model have a different id or whatever, to then feel free to put a retexture mod without basically making the shared/same models "conflict" thus, the rexture only touches the "unique" model instead of the same/shared models?? (i think i explained myself rather poorly) Let's see if with this example i can make my question clear. I'm using the armor mod, Armor of the Wardens Burden: www.nexusmods.com/dragonage/mods/2706/?and i want to use this retexture, but most important, his optional file: www.nexusmods.com/dragonage/mods/4230/?what's this about? i have installed Grey Wardens of Ferelden, and if i want to use the optional file, all my helmets will have the black retexture, and what i want to achieve is, use that optional retexture without all the helmets changing to this black retexture, only one, that's why i ask if it's possible to reuse the model to make one "unique and different" piece that doesn't conflict, and if so, then how to do it.

If I understand correctly what you want (a unique item that uses a specific texture, without overriding similar items which have the same model), then yes, that is certainly possible. You'd need to create a 'standalone' version of the item... unfortunately, the tutorial I'd normally point you to is broken (the explanatory images are gone) -> here. There might be some information in the Nexus DAO modding forums, if you are inclined to spend some time digging through the posts there.

Pull a mod apart. Learn what each of the files does. Look at the files in an GFF/TLK/GDA editor... study MAO files in a TXT editor... look at source files of scripts.
