Kandros here with a question for you. What do you get when four Vanguards decide to test their individual mettle against the Kett on Firebase Sandstorm? The answer is lots of sword action, Falcon punches, headbutts, and enemies getting thrown in the air and biotically detonated!
In this special Gold Solo Chronicles, I have four videos to share with you. Our resident Vanguards made a little pact the other day, unbeknownst to me, to take a shuttle over to Sandstorm. There, one by one, they took turns on the base, waiting for the inevitable arrival of the Kett. There was a bet going out between them on who would post the fastest clear time. These Vanguards, so risky with their in-your-face tactics! I love them when they’re on my team and they take the point if attack. But, I hate it when they go off and die halfway across the map, forcing you know who to rez their sorry butts. It’s why Kandros here always specs into Tactical Revive!
At any rate, onto the show!
NOTE: YouTube currently is preventing me from publishing my Human Vanguard video. Will post it up as soon as it gets approved.
Update: Human Vanguard video now up. Features a successful Wave 6 Hack.

Asari DuelistThe Asari Duelist brings her sword and Disciple to Firebase Sandstorm and takes the fight to the Kett! Using Charge, Backlash, and Melee. this Duelist strikes down hordes of Chosen, Anointed, Destined, and Wraiths. She gives the Ascendant a taste of his own medicine by reflecting back his orb. Objectives were Devices and Retrieval. Biotic Blink is a great way to get out of trouble, but be careful when disabling or retrieving a device. Don't blink through the walls and have to kite enemies all over again. This happened several times during this match. Gameplay Notes and build link: bit.ly/2zEBs7lDisciple Siphon X was used for role-playing purposes. A better shotgun would have made for quicker times. Still, it took one charge + one Disciple blast to take down the shields of Destined and Anointed, allowing the Duelist to use her melee for take them out with one swipe of her sword. The Disciple isn't very accurate, so the Equalizer was used a few times to eliminate the Ascendant's Orb. Knockdown Lance might have been more effective than of Shield Powered Lance, especially when I charged into a crowd of enemies. I used Lance sparingly, which would have synergized with the way I was playing the game. Or, I could have kept Lance at Rank 3 and brought Backlash to Rank 5 with Reflection. The Duelist has many options to make for a fast, exciting, and in-your-face gameplay

Batarian VanguardNext, Grakkus wanted to take his chances against the Kett. “What weapon loadout are you bringing with you?” “Weapons?” barked Grakkus, “I’m going to punch everything!” And punch he did. After being sliced and diced by the Asari Duelist, the Kett left Sandstorm black and blue after being on the receiving end of Grakkus’ Batarian Gauntlet. Gameplay and Build link: bit.ly/2hoI7u3This is an ultimate glass melee build with Rank 4B and Rank 6B melee evolutions in Combat Fitness. This Batarian doesn't need to Hold the Line; he moves the line! For survivability, I went with with Annihilation 6B Vortex, a Power Efficiency Mod III for faster cooldowns, and the Juggernaut Shield for the extra shields I sacrificed for extra melee damage. With Flak Cannon, I went with extra power cells and stunning. I didn't want Rank 4A Damage and Force Rank 6B Shredder because I wanted the enemies to have some health left before I rushed in and punched them. This build means you have to be extra careful not to be surrounded and targeted by enemies just outside of your Annihilation Field and punching radius. I found my combo damage to be pretty powerful without having to go with Rank 5B in Weapon Training. An alternate build would have to sacrifice some melee or Flak Cannon to get the extra combo damage. I’ve seen some builds exclude Annihilation Field, but I like it, especially the Rank 6B Vortex ability to neutralize unshielded enemies (also on the Krogan Gladiator). Double devices meant for a relatively easy run (no hacks or uploads to ruin his punching days). Like with the Duelist, watch out that you don't accidentally Falcon Punch the device and give precious seconds to the enemy to rush your position. That said, I had several failed attempts where I got a Wave 3 Hack and a Wave 6 Upload or Wave 3 Upload and a Wave 6 Hack for the objectives. I used up all of my consumables finishing the first objective such that I was spent by the time Wave 6 arrived.

Human VanguardFollowing the Asari Duelist's melee and Batarian Vanguard's punching exploits on Firebase Sandstorm, the Human Vanguard showed the Kett how to fly with Charge, Seismic Nova and Lifting Shockwave. I have always warned her about lifting, but not killing, enemies, “If you’re not careful, they might come back to bite you later.” She replied, “Yes, I know. I just like the crowd control and to watch them fly!” And fly they did. By Wave 6, however, the Kett were not very happy getting burned and taking flying lessons. They threw everything they had at her during the Wave 6 Hack at the LZ. Our Human Vanguard ably kited them several times away from the hack zone when it got too hot and completed it with just 10 seconds to spare. Gameplay notes and build link: bit.ly/2jnP1UjI love Seismic Nova and Lifting Shockwave for two ways to crowd control. Plus, it never gets old seeing enemies fly this way and that way. You have to be careful if you lift enemies with just a sliver of health left. Solving this would require more of a glass cannon build with three ranks in Barrier and Rank 5B Special Combat Training in APEX Training. The Venom Shotgun isn't the Mass Effect 3 version, but it's still a good gun when you learn its idiosyncrasies. It primes well and has good area of effect (AOE) damage. I think I was able to make multiple fire explosions with charged Venom shots followed by Shockwave. Same with Rank 6A Seismic Nova with the Rank 5B Anti-Shield evolution. I would rush or Charge into a crowd, perform a Nova, and follow up with a Shockwave to create multiple biotic detonations. Love that sound! The Asari Duelist, Batarian Vanguard, and Krogan Vanguard have much more powerful melee build trees, so I went with a power-centric build with this Vanguard. I suppose a melee centric build could work with Rank 5B Barrier Drain. Still, even with a Strength Enhancer booster and the Juggernaut Shield, the amount of damage for each melee is less than her other Vanguard counterparts. The hack at the LZ was in the best possible place on Sandstorm. It allowed me to kite the Kett away from the circle once they rushed in. Still, with the progress going backwards whenever I left the circle, I couldn’t spend too much time away. I used Shockwave to push away the dogs and rockets to take away one of the Ascendants and Fiends. It was super hectic, but somehow I got it done. They were several failed attempts with these Vanguards where I needed just a few more seconds to complete an Upload or a Hack.

Krogan VanguardFinally, our Krogan Vanguard was our final soldier on the battlefield. By this time, the Kett were sick of being beaten up by the Asari Duelist, Batarian Vanguard and Human Vanguard, so they were mad as hell and threw their best at our Krogan. They gave him all he could handle, including a Wave 3 Upload and a Wave 6 Boss objectives but it was of no use. Tuchanka may be light years away, but this Krogan knows how to crush the enemy and complete the objectives! Our Krogan brought a Soned Bulwark and a Piranha Siphon to Firebase Sandstorm. I suggested bringing the Rozerad Siphon, remarking that his Bulwark Soned wouldn’t give him any damage resistance, but Kroganov waved me off. “Bigger is better! Can you imagine the mighty Kroganov using such a little pistol? Siphon? I have Krogan Rage! And my head!” On his return from the mission, I told Kroganov that he should be proud of his accomplishments during the Upload and Boss objectives. He nodded and quietly said that the shame and disappointment he felt from missing his Rite of Passage on Tuchanka has been wiped clean. “Now I need to find my Mercenary brother so I can load up on ryncol. For Andromeda!” Gameplay notes and build link: bit.ly/2jjtSL1Kroganov might not want to have a Soned Siphon, but I wouldn’t mind him using one. His Krogan Rage was an effective substitute for regenerating his health over time. The extra accuracy and stability boosts from Fortify 5B and APEX Training 5B and 6A, the Soned and the Piranha become pretty accurate guns. The Soned also primes very well, and I was able to create many fire explosions with the Soned and Charge. You can also starting spinning up the Soned, Charge into an enemy, and the Soned will continue firing after exiting Charge. Explosive Purge came in handy whenever I charged into a group of enemies and needed some additional time to head butt them or (slowly) get away. Nova was the odd power out, and I just had one rank in it compared with Rank 6 with the Human Vanguard. Like the Batarian Vanguard, the Krogan doesn’t have much in the way of shields, but he has Krogan Rage and Rank 5A Unstoppable for added damage resistance. This kept me alive while waiting for Charge to come back online. Instead of Structural Ergonomics, I chose Assault Loadout for an extra 15% damage with the Soned and Piranha. Let’s talk about the two objectives. Wave 3 Upload was tough, especially the final circle. I wasted all of my rockets clearing out either the Ascendant or the circles. With no rockets left by Wave 6, I surely was in trouble with the Behemoth, no? Fortunately, on a previous failed attempt, I figured out a way to take out the Behemoth as quickly as possible. Using the Piranha, I would fire until the ammo counter reached 1. Then, I popped an ammo pack which refilled my Piranha back to 8. I would do it again until the Behemoth went down. Had to use Charge a couple of times to regain my shields as I continued shooting at him at point blank range. Everything else was surrounding me and shooting at me, and I have no idea how I survived their barrage.

Additional notes
For all of my Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 playthroughs, I have chosen to be a Vanguard. It’s the ultimate risk versus reward character, and I love charging into a group of enemies and escaping relatively unscathed. It doesn’t always work this way. I still have nightmares trying to get past the Collector platforms in Mass Effect 2.
Objective RNG trolled me hard on several failed solo attempts with all of these characters save the Duelist. I got Hack and/or Upload several times with the Batarian, Human, and Krogan. The locations of the circles were often bunched up next to each other. While those three have a lot of crowd control abilities, it’s easy to get overrun to the point where the timer is going backwards or running out before you have time to complete the hack/uploads.

Human Vanguard video has been added, featuring a successful Wave 6 Hack where I had to leave the circle several times to draw enemies away. Finished it with just seconds to spare.

I really like your build for the Kroguard. I have been trying different builds for a while, and I keep coming back to this build. I think you are right; it is the ultimate risk vs reward character, and can do a lot of DPS if you play him well. The Concussive Ruzad works pretty good with this guy also. Thanks!
